Amazon suspending shipments of nonessential items to warehouses

6

Seriously? All Americans are going online to buy what they need as they are forced to shelter in place and socially isolate themselves.

If there was ever a company positioned to allevate the crisis, it’s Amazon. So why would they pull back? Hire more people, don’t cut the supply chain.

WSJ: The cost to Americans of the economic shutdown is vast. What are they getting for their money? Essentially less excess demand for respiratory ventilators and other emergency care than can currently be supplied.

Story continues below advertisement

This demand will come largely from the elderly and chronically ill, who would be competing for these resources with the usual large number of old and ill people already suffering from acute respiratory distress as a result of routine flu and cold infections. A silver lining will be fewer cold and flu victims overall thanks to social distancing to fight Covid-19.

Some number of respiratory deaths will be avoided (really delayed since we all die) but we’ll be spending a lot more than we’ve ever been willing to spend before to avoid flu deaths. Eighty-three percent of our economy will be suppressed to relieve pressure on the 17% represented by health care. This will have to last months, not weeks, to modulate the rate at which a critical mass of 330 million get infected and acquire natural immunity.
Will people put up with it once they realize they are still expected to get the virus? Wouldn’t it make more sense to pour resources into isolating the vulnerable rather than isolating everyone? Basically aren’t we really just praying that summer will naturally suppress transmission and get us off the hook of an untenable policy?

Amazon suspending shipments of nonessential items to warehouses

By Chris Mills Rodrigo, The Hill, March 17, 2020:

Amazon is suspending shipments of nonessential items to its warehouses in the United States and United Kingdom following shortages triggered by the coronavirus outbreak.

“We are seeing increased online shopping and as a result some products such as household staples and medical supplies are out of stock,” a spokesperson for the online retail giant said in a statement to The Hill Tuesday. “With this in mind, we are temporarily prioritizing household staples, medical supplies and other high-demand products coming into our fulfillment centers so we can more quickly receive, restock and ship these products to customers.”

The freeze will be effective from Tuesday through April 5, according to Amazon, although an extension has not been ruled out.

Products already en route to facilities will still be accepted.

Limiting nonessential items is just one step Amazon has taken in response to increased demand for products to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday, Amazon announced it is planning to hire about 100,000 new employees.

The company also plans to raise wages from $15 to $17 per hour for workers at American locations.

“We are seeing a significant increase in demand, which means our labor needs are unprecedented for this time of year,” Amazon’s senior vice president of operations, Dave Clark, wrote in a memo obtained by The Wall Street Journal.

“The DNC will have gotten their fondest wish and defeated Bernie Sanders, far ahead of schedule. Now they are doing everything possible to be nice to him in order to keep his supporters. Bernie has given up, just like he did last time. He will be dropping out soon! MAGA/KAG”

Toilet paper is an essential. Will we be able to order toilet paper?

If I need CAT7 patch cables, is that an essential?

Since I’m not going out, are Blurays and books considered essentials?

Tissue paper for the nose; is that and essential?

What about thermometers; are they essential?

Who gets to decide what is essential for you?

Hogwash, if Bozos is so concerned why are many of the shelves, especially produce at Whole Paycheck empty half the time and people shopping in panic mode, when I can go to a competing grocer and and it is almost like a normal day except for sanitizer etc. I sense some manipulation here.

Does that mean I won’t be getting the cleaning tabs or coffee beans I ordered for my espresso machine?
