Deadly Toronto hammer attack was terrorism, police allege
A hammer attack that killed a 64-year-old woman in Toronto on Feb. 21 has been linked by police to terrorism, with the alleged murderer now facing a terrorism-related charge.
Saad Akhtar, 30, was already facing a first-degree murder charge over the apparently random killing of the woman, attacked by a man with a hammer on Friday evening.

But on Tuesday, prosecutors updated charge to “murder – terrorist activity.” The charge applies to a murder “if the act or omission constituting the offence also constitutes a terrorist activity.”
The RCMP and Toronto police said in a joint news release the attack “appears to be an isolated incident and there is no further known threat to the public associated to the accused at this time.”
The victim has been identified by police as Hang-Kam Annie Chiu. She was walking on Toronto’s Sheppard Ave. East near Markham Rd. when she was attacked at around 7 p.m.
The accused’s mother told Global News she had no idea who the victim was, calling Chiu “a stranger” to the family and her son.
“As part of our investigation into the homicide, we came across evidence that lead us to believe there may be a terrorism-related offence,” said Toronto police spokesperson Meaghan Gray.
Police then contacted the RCMP-led Integrated National Security Enforcement Team in Toronto, which probes terrorism cases.
“And that’s what’s brought us to today where the updated charge was laid in court this morning,” said Gray.

University of Calgary law professor Michael Nesbitt said he believed this was the first time the specific charge of murder – terrorist activity had been used.
He said there were two reasons to apply the charge.
“One, signalling, and calling it what it is, if authorities think it’s terrorism. And two, it gets you from second degree murder to first-degree murder without having to prove that the murder was ‘planned and deliberate’,” he said.
“That in turn gets you a longer sentence in terms of the parole ineligibility going from 10 to 25 years, but still life in prison.”
Akhtar’s mother said the family had left Pakistan in 2001 to escape terrorism.
She said her son had completed a co-op at the University Health Network at the end of December.
He would punch the walls in her townhouse when he was angry.
Asked if she had been concerned about his behavior, she said: “Of course I am worried but I can’t help because he don’t want to take help.”
He walked an hour every day to a mosque and back but did not return home on Friday night as usual, she said, adding the attack did not occur on his regular route home.
Police later told her he had been arrested.
It would be Canada’s first deadly terrorist attack since a self-described follower of the misogynist Incel movement ploughed a rented van into pedestrians on Toronto’s Yonge Street in April 2018, killing 10 people.
It was unclear whether Akhtar was attached to any terrorist group.
The so-called Islamic State has since 2014 been urging followers to conduct attacks using readily-available weapons such as knives and vehicles.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service’s latest annual report said extremists inspired by ISIS and Al Qaeda were “the number one national security threat to public safety in this country. Investigating these threats remains a top priority for CSIS.”

Every attack and heinous crime perpetrated by ‘immigrants’ esp Muslims, must be answered by jailing and then removing the perp back to his place of origin. In my opinion, his or her entire family must also be deported after any serious crime.

If memory serves me correctly, Ibrahim Ali was one of Miss Trudy’s moslem refugees. Yes, the moslem refugees, that when queried about Canada bringing in so many …. Miss Trudy stated that it would stand personally responsible for Canada’s overwhelming onslaught of moslem “refugee” invaders.
I have yet to see Miss Trudy charged for those crimes. Hayull, Miss Trudy is still New Sweden’s (formerly “Canada”) PM.
This was a disgraceful and disgusting case, and a terrible tragedy, that received all too little publicity in Canada. I have great empathy and sympathy for the victims of these degenerates. But I have no sympathy in general for Canadians. How the hell can anyone have any sympathy for a country that would re-elect a PM that is a muslim and has given 10.5 million dollars to Kadhr, a convicted killer and terrorist. Most Canadians are such gutless, spineless, sniveling, groveling, virtue signalling cowards. Historically they have never responded to anything until and unless they are deeply and personally affected.
Canada is showing via its decades of leftist teachers pumping their dogma into students, and they are on strike for more money right now, how woke they are just like your kids.
On the other hand read some Canadian history. Over 1 in 10 Canadians fought in WW1 and WW2 with a staggering casualty count and we were in supporting the UK right away unlike the US. From Vimy Ridge to Kandahar other soldiers, like the US, recognize the fighting ability of our guys. In Korea our soldiers stopped the Chinese advance on Seoul killing thousands of their troops. We have the same shitty politicians you have on the left like Saunders. That is our real enemy.
I am extremely well versed in Canadian History. The Germans at Vimy feared the Canadians and called them the Devil Dogs. My father fought on the shores of France at Vimy. He was a Canadian. I have the highest regard and respect for those amazing warriors. However, that was then and this is now. And sadly, in both the US and Canada, pussy, cowardly millennials have way too much of a say and are backed by MSM. The only difference is that as you mentioned, Canada has (it seems) a much deeper and more profoundly grounded indoctrination into Socialism and leftist degeneracy. I was a driver for the G20 and stood on Queen Street beside an ETF sergeant. Um 35,000 US soldiers died in the Korean War and no Canadian units were at the Chosin Reservoir. Nearly all the tanks, naval support and air support used in the Korean War were US piloted and/or manned.
Were Canadians the only units North of Seoul? Somehow I doubt the Canadians took on 30 Chinese divisions (and any remaining North Korean forces) all by themselves. The entire US 8th army was in Korea, are you trying to tell me they weren’t fighting north of Seoul?

I couldn’t agree more, but it won’t happen in this now morals-destitute and gutless society where criminals, not least murderers are favoured over their victims. The courts and their sentences for serious crimes are a bad joke. The perpetrators of crimes are really ‘victims of the society’- these moron think. Consider Christopher Husbands who shot and murdered two in the Eaton Centre, yet could be released in a few years, because the poor darling has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Have you ever heard of anyone with PTSD being violent because of this condition? It causes anxiety, not homicidal thoughts. Canadian judges will believe anything. They are that stupid and irresponsible.

This report is accurate. The previous Toronto terrorist attack was an Islamic jihad attack and took place in July, 2018 when Faisal Hussain shot 15 people in the Danforth area, killing two girls. But gutless Canadian authorities, who include police chief, Mark Saunders, choose to say that ‘we might never know what drove him to do this’. That is a blatant lie. Toronto Sun newspaper reporter, Joe Warmington, heard from pedestrians in the area that night, that they heard Hussain saying “Allahu Akbar” while conducting his shooting spree, but God forbid in Canada that we should learn that the murderer was a Muslim and conducting jihad.
