Iraqi official: Airstrike hit cars carrying Iran-backed militia north of Baghdad

Story continues below advertisementBAGHDAD (AP) — An Iraqi official says an airstrike has hit two cars carrying Iran-backed militia north of Baghdad, one day after U.S. attack on top Iranian general Gen. Qassem Soleimani. The official said five members of the militia were killed. The official said the identity of those killed was not immediately known. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Iran promised to seek revenge for a U.S. airstrike near Baghdad’s airport that killed the mastermind of its interventions across the Middle East, and the U.S. said Friday it was sending thousands more troops to the region as tensions soared in the wake of the targeted killing.
The death of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Iran, which has careened from one crisis to another since President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions.

4 years agoBecause of the attacks against Iranians in Iraq, the Iraqi Parliament will be meeting tomorrow, and will be voting to have US troops leave their country. If they vote yes, we should leave within 10 days. However, if they request US military aid in the future, it should be refused. Let the Iraqis select their own fate.

I do know unlike our lazy politicians, he has dealt with people all over the world in his business dealings and knows how to handle these vipers over there. So I’ll trust his judgment. Iran is nothing more than an hot aired bully and I am thinking that Trump is calling their bluff and seeing if they will negotiate. You have to STAND UP to BULLIES. 4 years agoIf Iraq tells the US to leave, that government knows it won’t last three months at best. Civil war will break out. Iran will take over.
If the US leaves, it should take everything it brought. Military installations are left flattened. Tanks, trucks, transportation, heavy and light weapons, radar, communications and electronics go. No military observers or advisers. A full and complete abandonment of Iraq. No financial guarantees, loans, or gifts. Deaf ears to its pleas for assistance. When Iraq finally demands (read: begs) for help, it lost its one and only chance.
Iran will plunder Iraq’s oil fields and take its crops and wealth back to Iran.
This gets the US out of Iraq, saves billions, doesn’t have to help an ungratefully people, leaves the local problems to Iran, and can set up one of its fleets off shore to take out Iran if it gets really stupid.
No reason to keep trade with Iraq to support its economy. How much saffron does the US need? Figs, Israel has plenty to sell. Oil? The US has plenty. Iraq wants to go its own way, why good luck to it.
True, Iran will take over, but the Iraqis do hate Iran. And with all the internal problems Iran has, this will only make it more difficult for Iran to fight a civil war.
