Joe Biden tells coal miners to ‘learn to code’

By OANN, January 1, 2019:

Story continues below advertisement

Former Vice President Joe Biden gave coal miners a suggestion while on the campaign trail: ditch the mines and learn to code. It’s all a part of his plan to make America a little more ‘green.’

The Biden campaign has long called for America to reduce its carbon footprint by moving away from fossil fuels. During a campaign stop in New Hampshire, the former vice president suggested he’d hold executives accountable and “put them in jail” for using fossil fuels.

However, it was his advice to lifelong coal miners that received the most backlash. In the interests of a ‘greener economy,’ Biden pushed the crowd to transition out of mining and into coding.

“Anybody who can go down 300 to 3,000 feet into a mine sure as hell can learn how to program as well,” he said. Anybody who can throw coal into a furnace can learn how to program for god’s sake.

Nany were quick to criticize Biden, calling his comments reductive, tone-deaf and unhelpful.

According to the Brookings Institute, the number of coal industry jobs has plummeted by 40 percent over the past decade. Studies suggested there’s little proof retraining programs are actually successful in finding people jobs with equal or higher pay. Reports said some of those jobs only pay $12 to $15 an hour compared to the $75,000 salary coal miners receive while working in the mines.

The Trump administration has pushed to end what it calls the “previous administration’s war on coal.”

“I canceled the so-called Clean Power Plan and repealed Obama’s federal coal moratorium,” said President Trump. “We’re putting our great miners back to work.”

The American Coal Council has yet to comment on Biden’s remarks.

First, “coding” or programming is not that easy depending on the task at hand. There are languages to learn and development environments to master. Then there is knowledge about the users tasks, industrial and business knowledge. Some of this can be learned in a six month training program, but that’s only enough to get an internship or similar.

Second labor markets are highly localized. So training a coal miner for jobs that exists elsewhere introduces a dislocation or a misallocation of labor that would need to be addressed.

Third the training program itself requires the availability of instructions, administrators , buildings , equipment etc.

Of all the idiotic things Joe B has uttered this one stands out as it appears he gave it some forethought and came up with this bogus plan. This type of program only works if there is a pre-existing labor shortage and the program is setup in the local labor market to address that shortage.

Some training programs have great success but many become make-work programs and throw money at the problem political sink holes.

Agreed. I took a community college’s programming course while a teacher/coach in El Paso. Trust me, it ain’t no piece of cake.

The technology evolves so quickly that the textbooks in high school computer classes are only a year old when issued to the students, two years at the most.

Dave, overall you are correct, and a whole lot more tactful than I am. However, I would differ with you on one score. Great programmers require little in the way of administrators, buildings, even fancy equipment. Richard Stallman, for example, apparently has long used a very unremarkable computer.

Such things as instructors and buildings may make it easier, and more accessible to the masses, but you seem to overlook- and Biden is utterly clueless about- the kind of fairly rate intelligence that is required to produce highly skilled programmers. I might liken it to being a grandmaster in chess or a gifted composer- the vast majority of us just ain’t gonna make it.

“Great programmers require little in the way of administrators, buildings, even fancy equipment.” If you’re planning on making a difference in the supercomputing world you’re DEAD wrong.

What an ignorant, patronizing, insensitive, callous, cynical, bullying jackass.

Furthermore, in addition to the economic damage they will do right off the bat, If these anti-science anti-capitalist anti-individualist morons keep trying to reduce CO2 they will eventually do enough damage to crop production that everyone who can be spared will have to be farming like something out of “Interstellar”. Amazing how much potential damage manipulating political hacks can do when they sell the equally ignorant voting public on a fairy tale.

Starving us to death is pretty much the ultimate goal. Stalin, Pol-pot, Mao, Hitler. All staved millions to death if they did not execute them outright. We all know Diverse (divide) the population, Disarm the population, Centrally control everything which evolves into starving he population….to death.

Biden’s winning strategy is to shut down coal mines. He is a nutcase!
Poor Joe, he has trouble figuring out WHERE he is when he campaigns….
He is the walking, talking definition of the 25th Amendment.comment image

Just one thing wrong with that statement, Joe: it ain’t so. If you believe that, you are a clueless moron who bloviates on matters of which you know nothing. And if you don’t believe it, you are contemptible liar.

The Labor government in Queensland,Australia, equivalent of your dem-ons told coal miners the exact same thing as they refused to allow the Adani coal mine to proceed. During the election last May they lost nearly every seat in Queensland. Surprise surprise, they suddenly had an epiphany straight after the election and decided coal wasn’t so bad after all and approved stage 1 of Adani within a couple of weeks despite having held it up for years. amazing what a wake up call from the voters can do although I doubt your dems there will ever get the message judging by the last three years.

sick of hearing about fossil fuels being the greatest danger to the environment. The fires all over the world, volcanoes erupting, forests being destroyed (for profit), and biggest of all, the magnet pole is shifting, these are the greatest reasons for “climate change” which I don’t believe in. Ecclesiastes 1:4 “One generation passes away and another comes, but the earth abides forever.”

We have misunderstood Joe Biden! What he means is “LET THEM MINE BITCOINS” After all bitcoins are clean and green and are much more useful than dirty coal or gold. The electrical power comes from windmills and fairy dust. (* Anyone take notice that a windmill in Ca. blew over and crushed a car, thankfully no people hurt)

overall, I think this shows just how limited Joe Biden is on his thinking.
I couldn’t think of any more different jobs than coal mining and coding.
His handlers have to be cringing.
Will any coal miner vote for him after a statement like that?
It’s not one of his famous gaffs but seems to be one of his ideas that he would use in running the country if President.
I can’t see how he can get the nomination when he puts out that kind of campaign talk.

Don’t mine coal! Mine BITCOIN! It burns cleaner and makes less carbon.
