De Blasio giving freed NYC inmates cellphones, MetroCards and gift cards
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s latest soft-on-crime initiative has workers stationed on Rikers Island presenting newly released jailbirds with free transit passes and two $25 debit cards each, The Post has learned.
Plans even call for the addition of prepaid, “burner”-style cellphones and drawstring bags for the ex-inmates to carry their swag, a source familiar with the program said.
The “crime pays” giveaways build on another de Blasio policy — revealed by The Post last month — that showers freebies including Mets tickets on prisoners being released under the state’s new bail-reform law.
Those goodies are intended to serve as incentives so the defendants return to court as ordered, but the new program covers everyone who’s released from Department of Correction custody, the source said.
That includes cons who have finished their jail terms or been sentenced to time served.
Law enforcement officials were outraged over the swag bags.
“It’s a sad state of affairs when the city bends over backward to reward criminals instead of protecting the victims of their crimes,” one source lamented. “What’s next? Free limo service back home?”
The taxpayer-funded program, which is set to run for six months and expand to city courthouses next week, relies on workers from several nonprofits that cater to ex-cons and are being paid by the city.
The groups include the Fortune Society, the Osborne Association and Fedcap Rehabilitation Services, the source said.
The city is spending $500,000 on items that will also include winter coats. It will also distribute footwear donated by the Steven Madden shoe company, according to the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, which is overseeing the program.
Officials declined to say how many prisoners the DOC expects to release before the program’s scheduled end in June, but data posted on the city’s website shows that 2,489 inmates were discharged last month.
If that number holds steady, nearly 15,000 inmates will likely benefit from the program.
On Friday, The Post saw several workers stationed at a table in front of the Rikers visitation building.
Since Tuesday, one said, between five and 50 discharged prisoners a day were given seven-day MetroCards worth $32 and two, $25 Visa gift cards.
Next week, the swag will include a prepaid Metro by T-Mobile flip phone, the worker said.
The Bronx man, 27, who gave his name as “Jesse,” said he served 11 months for assault, and spent his debit cards on food upon getting sprung.
“Fortune Society says they’ll give me another if I stay clean and pass a drug test,” said Jesse, who has a teardrop tattooed at the corner of his left eye.
“It’s a debit. No cash. But it’s still good.”
A mayoral spokesman said sending ex-inmates home “with essential resources needed to survive is critical to ensuring the safety of themselves and others, and maintaining our status as the safest big city in America.”
But a law enforcement source said the program showed “how society is swinging.”
“2020 is going to be the year of the perp,” the source said.

There’s nothing wrong with paying criminals to not be criminals. But isn’t that what having three hots and a cot plus all medical/dental care and education is supposed to be all about? Apparently, they’re now giving bonuses for commtting crimes. I wonder how much NY gives the victims of those criminals who suffer the rest of their lives? At some point the public should ask itself what is more important; the rights of the criminal or the rights of the victims!

DeBlasio never claimed to be a law and order mayor. He proves it every day.
When he said he would work for the people, he never mentioned 7 hours a week, or was that a month?
He does keep fit, though. Helicopter to work, then limo drive to gym; limo ride back to office, followed by helicopter flight back to home. A man so connected with the average citizen of his city. He really can feel for them. He thanks them for the tribute they give him to rule their once fare city.
Those illegally living and (ahh) working in HIS city are given every benefit possible, even if citizens aren’t afforded these benefits. All they will need to do to show their appreciation is vote for him; if you have a legal driver”s permit you can vote, and that they now have. No ICE to cool down their enthusiasm for him.

Maybe the law abiding citizens of NYC should come out en masse and vote. NYC has low voter turnout. It is their city and they are getting what they voted for and what they have come to accept, which seems to be whatever the NYT says.

Well I don’t know about block managers but they have a lot of stuff going on in Black and Hispanic areas. I know from first hand information because my aunt was a avid, or shall I say rabid, Democrat. 1. They have motor voter laws which automatically registers anyone who gets a licens.
2. They go door to door in Black areas to register people and suggest who to vote for.
3. They go to nursing homes and give suggested voting lists to people who are demented.
4. But most importantly they got laws on the books in the 1970s to break up voting districts to be sure to break up the conservative and or White votes.
5. And do not forget the New Black Panthers in Philladelphia who threatened White voters. They also patrol Black neighborhoods and “encouraged” Blacks to vote for Obama.
They are very well organized and unfortunately Republicans are not.

I can only give first hand info on the stuff that my aunt did. One thing that I saw her do is approach her then 65 year old aunt in the 1960s and tell her that she had to vote for Johnson because Goldwater would take away her SS check. Her aunt had never voted in her life and had limited education and was afraid of the polls. My aunt gave her aunt a list of people to vote for.

WE have a similar thing in that the Labor Unions take the dues of the common workers and then give it to specific Dimm politicians…a lot of graph there also….kick backs…..they have already been threatening teachers and labor workers who have complained about what politicians the Unions are giving to….they are threatened with problems for them if they don’t donate to certain politicians…..Democrats.
