Comey admits ‘I was wrong’ on FISA conduct, remains defiant on dossier in tense interview

James Comey on findings from DOJ inspector general’s report on alleged FISA abuse

Former FBI Director James Comey joins Chris Wallace for an exclusive interview on ‘Fox News Sunday.’

Former FBI Director James Comey admitted on “Fox News Sunday” that the recently released Justice Department Inspector General’s report on the launch of the FBI’s Russia investigation and their use of the surveillance process showed that he was “overconfident” when he defended his former agency’s use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

This comes days after Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report and testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee detailed concerns that included 17 “significant errors and omissions” by the FBI’s investigative team when applying for a FISA warrant to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. Horowitz referred “the entire chain of command” to the FBI and DOJ for “how to assess and address their performance failures” during the probe, which was conducted while Comey was in charge.
IG HOROWITZ RIPS FBI ‘FAILURE IN RUSSIA PROBE, SAYS NOBODY VINDICATED BY REPORT

“He’s right, I was wrong,” Comey said about how the FBI used the FISA process, adding, “I was overconfident as director in our procedures,” and that what happened “was not acceptable.”

Horowitz did make it clear that he believes the FBI’s investigation of Russian election interference and possible connections with the Trump campaign was properly initiated, but he did note that this is based on a “low threshold.” He also concluded that there was no testimonial or documentary evidence to show that the investigation started due to any political bias, but said the issue of bias “gets murkier” when it comes to the various issues with the FISA process.

That process included the reliance on information gathered by former British spy Christopher Steele as part of opposition research conducted by Fusion GPS for the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign. Horowitz’s report stated that government attorneys were hesitant to approve a FISA warrant application until they relied on unverified information from Steele. That information also was used in subsequent renewals for the FISA warrant.

Comey downplayed the role of Steele’s information in obtaining the FISA warrant against Page, claiming Sunday that it was “not a huge part of the presentation to the court,” just part of the information included in the warrant application.

He insisted that he and Horowitz “weren’t saying different things” about Steele’s significance, but host Chris Wallace then read Horowitz’s words, which said Steele’s information “played a central and essential role” in establishing probable cause.

Comey said he did not “see the disconnect” between his stance and Horowitz’s, even though he recognized that Steele’s reporting “was the one that convinced the lawyers” to move forward.

When Wallace accused him of minimizing the relevance of Steele’s information, Comey said, “if I was then I’m sorry that I did that.”

Another tense exchange occurred when Comey and Wallace accused each other of “mischaracterizing” the problems with Steele’s reporting. Comey claimed that the issue “were significant questions about the reliability of some of the sub-source reporting.”

Wallace then pointed out that according to Horowitz’s report, Steele’s Russian sub-source was not the problem. Rather, the sub-source told the FBI that Steele was the one misrepresenting his statements, demonstrating a lack of reliability.

Comey maintained “that doesn’t drive the conclusion that Steele’s reporting was bunk.”

In addition to the issues related to Steele, the FBI was found to have omitted exculpatory information about Page that could have impacted the judge’s decision in granting the FISA warrant. Included in this was an instance where an attorney was found to have altered an email to say that Page had not been a CIA source, when in fact he had been working with them. That information would have justified Page’s contacts with Russia, and its omission ultimately led to the FBI renewing the FISA warrant against Page.

In an April 2018 interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Comey claimed that the FISA process is “incredibly rigorous” and claimed that Republicans’ criticism of the Page FISA warrant was “a political deal” that was not “based in substance or law.”

Following the report’s release, Comey essentially claimed vindication, declaring in the wake of the report that the criticism of the bureau’s actions “was all lies.” When asked about vindication at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, the inspector general bluntly replied, “I think the activities we found here don’t vindicate anybody who touched this FISA.”

Comey explained that his claim of vindication was not in reference to the issues identified in Horowtiz’s report.

Exactly. All those brown nose careerists kiss up to their bosses and then demand the same from their employees. This is how government operates.

Comey appears to have broken the law, because he conspired to overthrow Trump by illegal means:
-18 U.S. Code § 2384. Seditious conspiracy
“If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow…”
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2384
According to this law, conspiring to overthrow the US President by unconstitutional means is a felony, penalty = 20 years
– Those bogus FISA applications were designed to overthrow Trump, and Comey was heavily involved in that fraud and contempt of court.

Baloney.

“Remember how we got here,” Comey said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” “The FBI was accused of criminal misconduct. Remember, I was going to jail, and lots of other people were going to jail.”

The inspector general, he added, “did not find misconduct by FBI personnel [emphasis added], did not find political bias, did not find illegal conduct.” The significant mistakes the inspector general identified are “not something to sneeze at” but also not evidence of intentional misconduct, Comey said.

While Durham may yet come to a different conclusion, nothing in the IG report supports your contention.

“…nothing in the IG report supports your contention.”
Why? Because IG is Obama’s plant and is doing everything possible to cover it up.

Piffle. If Horowitz is doing as you say, he is making quite a hash of it. He has uncovered substantial problems with the Bureau’s handling of FISA applications.

Despite its attempts to whitewash the crimes of the deep state, the damning Horowitz report has awakened us all to the realization that the FBI is a criminal organization run by lawless, seditious tyrants who answer to no one. Does anyone actually believe that the DOJ and the FBI’s attempt to depose by coup the President of The US is an isolated incident? No, it is SOP for this mafia-like criminal organization that pollutes and terrorizes the people of the USA.

The Horowitz report lays bare the charges made by hundreds of victims that the FBI is America’s No. 1 most prolific terrorist organization, planning and running terror plots against the American people as a way to justify its own existence in the so-called “war on terror.” Now it turns out the deep state is the origin of all that terrorism, and the FBI has been carrying out assassinations (JFK), cover-ups (Sen. RFK), death threats (Dr. MLK) and political coup attempts against America.

In their attempt to destroy Trump, the FBI finally got caught.

I see what is happening in Virginia RIGHT NOW! I see the TYRANNICAL ACTIONS of the DemoNAZIS in Virginia as a “miniature” America. These DemoNAZIS MUST be held accountable for their TREASONOUS actions.
IF a “law” is past – – AND – – it is contrary to the American Constitution – – – THAT “law” IS – – NULL and VOID!!!!!!!!

I hope no one lets Comey cover his ass with such a pitiful excuse for sedition. The number of wicked people involved in this coup is huge. They knew exactly what they were doing. And they need to go to prison for life, or worse.

It’s unbelievable that the FBI claims they had no idea that the entire Steele dossier was phony. They couldn’t be that stupid. They knew it was false, and yet used the dossier to apply for the warrants over and over, defrauding the FISA court knowingly. They all should go to jail. Rosenstein and Comey both signed the warrant applications.

Comey by admitting that he erred is attempting to avoid charges against himself that could involve a long prison sentence. In my opinion, Comey is a traitor and should be charged as such !

Comey, me think tho dost squeal like a pig too much. No ones accused him of a crime but yet he keeps defending himself. Not the signature of an innocent man. Makes you wonder what other crap he’s hiding.

Everyone connected to the Obama Crime Syndicate fears they might be charged with crimes once Durham’s investigation drops the hammer. Comey thinks a mea culpa and a good PR agent will save him.

Repeat after me. There are no crimes in the Deep State, only well-intentioned errors in judgement. The elite will escape culpability for an attempted coup. As is always the case with government organized crime, underlings will be thrown to the wolves.

Remember that on Tue Nov 3, 2020

There is such a thing I call SWAG. It stands for Silly Wild Ass Guess. Comey used different words, indicating his information was “low threshold.” That may qualify as the Statement of the Year. Look at the damage it caused, and tell me who is going to pay for it all. I have been cheated out of 3 years of productivity by my president because of this mans bad judgement.
Comey needs to pay very heavily. He got in a position where he could help the Deep State, and even after being caught, he continues to minimize his responsibility.
His actions need to be the beginning of the downfall of the two-party system. It does not work if the head of the party tells its members they must do things as a group, rather than represent their constituency. That is contrary to the reason Congress was established over 200 years ago.
And remember that Joe Biden was not a political candidate anymore when Obama left. He was retired, supposedly. But Hunter was active, reaping the benefit of being his father’s son, and getting rich. So, when Trump asks Ukraine to investigate corruption, which would put money into Hunter’s pocket, the Dems get upset and put their plan in motion.

Comey played a key role. Most people don’t know how much he helped Hillary win a seat from New York in the wake of the death of JFK Jr. but he fixed the election. How else would a person from Arkansas wind up as the Congresswoman from New York? Didn’t anybody wonder?
JFK Jr. was going to represent Crown Heights, a very Jewish community. Two of their leaders were in prison for economic crimes. Comey met with community leaders and they agreed to release these men in exchange for Hillary votes. Quid pro quo.

Name recognition helped.

Ironically, Lenny, without Comey, Hillary would likely have won. Comey quite upended things for her a week before the election, and the stench that surrounds her became too much for many people who had been backing her.

If Comey had been a “Deep State Operative”, he would never have cast doubt on Hillary as he did, and she would have sailed into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

No, not name recognition at all. Remember, she passed on her first opportunity and gave it to Barry O. In the run-up to her own election, her supporters were Never-Trumpers and “First Woman President” people, who it seems, could not carrry her. Many Dems jumped over just because she was that outrageously over-confident, in spite of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s action at the DNC. It was clear she was not outvoted, she was clearly not the people’s choice.
She fooled the Socialist Californians and New Yorkers, but she did not fool America.
Also, you don’t give Comey the credit he deserved for what he actually did for her. He was totally political, and it amounts to trading favors. You owe me, and you may owe me again, but eventually you will have to pay back. Comey was sharp enough to know he was walking a knife edge, and he knew when to jump ship.

Interesting. I don’t understand what you mean by this:

Also, you don’t give Comey the credit he deserved for what he actually did for her. He was totally political, and it amounts to trading favors.

“Extremely careless”? Anything else? Care to clarify?

While I too would have preferred more than “extermely careless”, I don’t know that it was outside what has happened in comparable occasions in the past. I do not believe that Comey was “totally political” or that he engaged in “trading favors”, but I’m happy to be educated.

BTW, a long time east coast person like Hillary runnning from New York is no more out of the ordinary for a mid-westerner turned Massachussets resident running from Utah.
