Israel heads for unprecedented third election in a year as stalemate continues

Israel’s parliament votes on Wednesday to dissolve itself in a fresh bid to break political deadlock

By Oliver Holmes, Guardian, 11 Dec 2019:

Israel’s parliament has voted to dissolve itself, sending voters to the polls for a third time in 12 months.

Israel is set to hold a third round of elections within 12 months, after a deadline to form a government passed with no politician able to bring together the disparate parties.

A time limit to forge a majority coalition in the country’s parliament, the Knesset, expired at midnight on Wednesday, automatically triggering a fresh national ballot.

By law, the poll cannot be held for three months, extending a political deadlock that has paralysed the country deep into next year. Lawmakers were debating late into the night on holding the vote on 2 March.

Israel has been gripped by political paralysis for the best part of a year after two inconclusive votes gave neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his rival, Benny Gantz, a clear lead.

Both men have attempted to cobble together a 61-seat majority, while also stalling each other’s plays for power. A final 21-day period in which any parliamentarian could be nominated as prime minister also ended with no frontrunner.

The development is seen as a boon for Netanyahu who had feared a last-minute deal by the opposition would end his decade-long run in power.

Thank Lieberman for this. He wouldn’t end the stalemate with his seats and side with Netanyahu. He would not align with the Blue and White or the Likud party. Netanyahu is getting the Trump treatment by the LEFT in Israel. Their High Court did rule that Netanyahu can remain P.M. till this farce is done.

Netanyahu: I will quit all my ministerial duties by January 1

Porfolios that he currently holds are the Health Ministry, Diaspora Ministry and Welfare Ministry, although he still intends to continue acting as prime minister.

Liberman: I will support pardon for Netanyahu if he quits politics
Yisrael Beytenu’s leader said that he would support “not immunity – a pardon in exchange for an honorable discharge.”
By JERUSALEM POST STAFF DECEMBER 12, 2019 12:46

Yisrael Beteynu leader Avigdor Liberman said he would support a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if it means he will leave the political system, during an interview with Ynet.

“Those who had to comprise the government were the two largest parties – together they have 65 mandates,” he said, in response to the question of whether he regrets not joining one of the leading parties. “From the first moment of the campaign I said: We’re only joining a unity government, no narrow government – and that was no exaggeration.”
