TEL AVIV, Israel — Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Wednesday tapped Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the right-wing Likud party to form a new government after receiving the final results of last week’s deadlocked election.“The people of Israel don’t want new elections,” said Rivlin at the presidential residence in Jerusalem after handing the mandate to Netanyahu and passing over primary challenger, former three-star general Benny Gantz from the centrist Blue and White party. “Parties will need to compromise.”

Netanyahu, whose deal-making skills and alliances with right-wing and religious parties have helped make him Israel’s longest serving prime minister, now has 42 days to try and cobble together a government. If he fails to do so the opportunity could pass to the next candidate who the president thinks has the greatest chance of forming a government.

Looks impossible to do. Good luck. The Israeli form of democracy is the worst in the world. They have 34 parties in a tiny country. 8-10 win seats. It is set up to discourage compromise and encourage obstinacy and disputatious behavior. I recall the history of the second rebellion against Rome. Israelis were having a 3 sided civil war inside Jerusalem. Historians say most Jews were killed by other Jews. Their system is fatally flawed by design. It will fall in time. If you tell a Jew it’s Wednesday he’ll argue it’s Thursday. You can lead a Jew to water but just try to make him drink. Good luck to Mr. Bibi but the system has no incentives to compromise and many incentives against it.

I can’t see the LEFT wanting to unite with Netanyahu. Liberman, a former Netanyahu protege, now hates Netanyahu and separated from him. Orthodox Jew, Liberman is the one that caused the second election and now refuses to back either party with his nine seats to give one of them the majority. How can a third election be avoided? If the LEFT gets control, Israel is finished – just my opinion. Maybe someone has better information than what I have read. I am not an expert on Israel and their politics.

Good points both of you and I agree. Lieberman is behind this avoidable mess. I used to respect him as a politician but it’s clear now the man is an attention-whore and either wants the premiership for himself or that he hates Bibi so much that he doesn’t care if he wrecks the center-right’s chances of building a strong govt.

Gantz will likely form a Leftist govt with the Arab party which means more suffering and destruction for Israel. People still don’t get it, it’s a one-way street with Muslims, to Islam and there is no going back.

That’s why Obama was such a massive disaster to the US since he setback the fight against Islam and aided the enemies of the West. The exact same thing will happen to Israel if Leftists get their grubby hands on power.

Just look at what a train-wreck Europe is now because of similar policies of appeasing Muslims and allowing them to enter by the millions as fake-refugees/migrants. Israel is a tiny country and it cannot afford to have its demography diluted by Arabs/Muslims any more. Keep it a Jewish state only.

Hopefully Lieberman can put aside his ego and put his country first and unite with Netanyahu’s govt. Frankly they should also throw out the traitorous Joint List Arab party because they are blatantly anti-Jew and anti-Israel.

Seems to me the situation reflects a very divided electorate, which is appropriate to the situation. The American system doesn’t function smoothly with sharply divided Congresses and administrations either- I’m not sure that Israel’s parlimentary system is any worse.

It is set up to discourage compromise and encourage obstinacy and disputatious behavior. … the system has no incentives to compromise

The system does encourage coalitions, which, in turn, requires comproise. I’m not sure why you make this claim or what you base it on. Israelis are “disputatious” and their political landscape reflects hard ideological differences.

And you leading me to water probably won’t make me drink either. Beer, on the other hand …

FROM HAL LINDSAY’S WEB SITE (prophetical and historical account):

“On Monday, September 23rd, the Likud party of Benjamin Netanyahu and the Blue and White party of Benjamin Gantz agreed to pursue a “unity government” for Israel. Negotiating teams are set to begin working out details of the proposed government on October 1st. It will be a difficult and treacherous process.

After the election in April, a government could not be formed. So, in September, just a few days ago, Israel held another election. Again, there was no clear-cut winner. Gantz’s Blue and White party won 33 seats and Netanyahu’s Likud won 31 seats, leaving them both a long way from the 61 seats needed to form a majority.

Israel has a parliamentary system of government. They call their legislative body the “Knesset.” That name comes from Knesset HaGdola, meaning “Great Assembly.” According to tradition, Ezra formed the Great Assembly. It was a religious council of 120 scribes, sages, and prophets. While it would be difficult to find a sage or prophet in the
modern Knesset, the number remains fixed at 120 – requiring 61 seats to create a majority.

Reuven Rivlin serves as President of Israel. The President has many ceremonial jobs but few actual powers. The most significant of his powers is in facilitating a new government following each election. The President must consult with Knesset members to determine who has the best chance of forming a governmental majority.

After recent polling of the Knesset, he found that Netanyahu had a slight advantage with 55 backers, compared to Gantz’s 54. That 54 includes the backing of the Israeli Arab party. It would be difficult to raise either of those numbers to 61, thus the proposed unity government.

Such a government would require some means of sharing power. From 1984 to 1988, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Shamir took turns acting as Prime Minister. While possible, such an arrangement between Netanyahu and Gantz has, at least until now, seemed highly unlikely.

A few days ago, Gantz cited impending indictments against Netanyahu as reasons against pursuing a unity government. Despite the accusations and investigations, formal charges have not been filed against the Prime
Minister. He continues to deny all the accusations. The Attorney General of Israel is scheduled to announce a decision on whether to indict on October 3rd. That greatly complicates the process of forming a government.

People tire of politicians. Winston Churchill stands as one of the great figures of the 20th century. He held his nation together during the terrible German blitz. After helping to lead the Allies to victory in World War II, he almost immediately lost his job as Prime Minister in 1945. That’s just how the world works.

It’s easy to forget what things were like in Israel when Bibi Netanyahu became Prime Minister. Bus bombs and intifadas made every moment of every day feel like a life or death struggle. Syria and Hezbollah constantly threatened from the north. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak almost gave away East Jerusalem. Thankfully, Yasser Arafat thought he could get even more, and turned the deal down. Benjamin Netanyahu changed all that. He brought the kind of stability that is necessary for national progress and economic prosperity.

He built an amazing record, but he also accumulated enemies. Those enemies include much of the Israeli and international press corps, as well as liberals in his own and other countries. Nevertheless, he stands as a towering figure in the history of modern Israel – the man Israel needed for the times in which he led.

Those of us who love Israel can hope his leadership will continue during the turbulent days to come. If not, we can be thankful for his leadership to this point.

The Book of Daniel teaches that the revived nation of Israel will one day join in a treaty with the Antichrist. The confirmation of that treaty will mark the beginning of what is popularly known as “the Tribulation.” The present turmoil in Israel seems to be bringing the world closer to that day.”
