Why We Are Bogged Down in Afghanistan

Afghanistan’s Taliban tells teachers, students to block presidential elections or risk death

By Abdul Qadir Sediqi

KABUL, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Afghanistan’s Taliban insurgent group on Wednesday warned teachers, students and other education workers to avoid the upcoming presidential vote or risk dying in attacks on election centres.

Story continues below advertisement

“Do not allow election organisers to turn your schools and institutions into electoral centres, and teachers and students should not work as electoral staff,” said the Taliban statement.

“We do not want to cause the loss of lives and financial losses for civilians, teachers and students,” it said.

In 10 days, Afghanistan will hold its fourth presidential election since United States-led forces toppled the hardline Islamist Taliban from power in 2001. The insurgents have sworn to violently disrupt the vote, which comes in the aftermath of collapsed peace talks between the militants and the United States.

Schools and universities make up between seven and eight out of every ten polling centres across the country, and though no students, teachers or education officials are being hired as election workers, they can volunteer, said Abdul Aziz Ibrahimi, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s election commission.

“We are committed to holding elections on the announced date, and such threats from the Taliban cannot prevent us from holding them,” the spokesman said.

The Ministry of Education was not immediately available for comment, but the United Nations and international donors have asked it to help with elections because of its relatively developed infrastructure.

On Tuesday, Taliban attackers killed nearly 50 people in separate suicide bombings, one targeting an election rally for incumbent President Ashraf Ghani, who is seeking a second five-year term.

Security across the country has been tight in the run-up to the vote, after threats by the Taliban to attack meetings and polling stations. The group has vowed to intensify clashes with Afghan and foreign forces to dissuade people from voting in the upcoming elections.

Last week, peace talks between the United States and the Taliban collapsed. The two sides had been seeking to reach an accord on the withdrawal of thousands of American troops from Afghanistan in exchange for security guarantees from the insurgents.

GWB’s roaring “success” – Afghanistan men and women voting!
Islam has no tolerance for our freedom or form of government.
Eighteen years later, native Afghanistan “men” still run away from their enemies after being trained and armed by US.
If they don’t want what we are imposing on them, and don’t want to defend their country, WHY are we there?

It was a blunder to go into Iraq/Afghanistan, but low-IQ Bush was easily led around by the nose by the Saudis to attack the wrong targets, when Iran and Saudi Arabia should’ve been rightfully bombed.

If all we’re going to do is the Muslims’ bidding and leave Islamic states intact then we are wasting American blood and treasure. The day they finally get their heads out of the sand and realize Islam is the real enemy and the cure is real freedom/democracy, only then does it make sense to invade and topple Islamic regimes.

Also if your goal was to kill terrorists, then no Taliban member should be alive today, or Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran’s regime and the thousands of other Islamic groups waging war against us.

Muslims worldwide are laughing at our confusion and cluelessness, esp the terrorists cause they know they’re safe because we have no idea who we’re fighting and we’re unwilling to name the enemy. All of this will just come back to bite us in the form of more terrorism until we finally figure it out.

And this is where Trump’s failure and weakness comes through. He was begging the Taliban for some peace deal so they could pull the troops out of Afghanistan. No doubt he ignored Bolton’s wisdom to destroy the Taliban and that’s why he was booted out. The Taliban killed US troops and Trump did nothing about it.

I know Trump has done a lot of good but when it comes to war, he’s one of the weakest presidents ever. Iran has continued to take hostages, attack allies, capture western oil tankers and Trump does nothing. He’s telegraphing weakness.

Trump foolishly fell for Left-wing propaganda who want us to surrender to Iran. They’re most comfortable being on their knees when it comes to dealing with enemies/dictators.

You got rid of Bolton for being a “warmonger” but now you’ve proven you lack the stones to fight evil regimes, pathetic. Trump should go back to doing his Apprentice tv show where he can make himself look powerful firing people. He’s not cut out to be CiC.

Trump wasn’t begging anyone let alone the Taliban for a peace deal. While I am uncomfortable with Trump meeting with them, this has been his pattern. He will meet with anyone! Kim from North Korea, Kayne West etc.. It’s his style. Trump is also a Monroe Doctrine guy.

Trump prefers to leverage money over lives. I agree with him. I am tired of the U.S. playing world policeman, fighting wars for other countries where we have NO NATIONAL INTEREST and treated like underpaid mercenaries with dead and maimed U.S. citizens as our reward. These countries REJECT what we have – freedom, a republic etc.. They like our money and love seeing their country rebuilt by us but that is about it. Islam will not change. If you wipe out the Taliban, another group will pop up. It’s ongoing – it’s ISLAM!

If you want to go back to bombing everyone that disagrees with us then you are a Bush. Bolton advocate. That is what they wanted. Bomb the shiiti out of a country to show how tough you are. If it was a one shot deal and REAL CHANGE could happen from that, I’d consider that but that wouldn’t be the outcome with this situation. All you get are endless wars, escalating debt, endless Muslim refugees, endless Muslim asylum seekers, endless entitlement debt and rebuilding their country debt.. I don’t want it. I see it as smart to END fighting for people that hate us and cut our loses and move on. In this situation SAUDI ARABIA should be the one bombing Iran – not the U.S.! That was more than a warning to Saudi Arabia. It was an act of war to Saudi Arabia. It is up to Saudi Arabia to act. They have the weaponry to do it too.

I also don’t mind Trump cycling through the stuffed establishment pipeline. I like it when he fires people he no longer finds useful. Bolton was one of those people who was trying to sabotage Trump behind his back with North Korea another county Bolton wanted to bomb. He suggested to Kim the Libya plan which was absurd to Kim and he knew it and Bolton was no longer included in trips there. Kim purposely stated he was against that plan and there is no comparison between the two countries. NK is not in it’s infancy as Libya was in developing nuclear weapons. Bolton might not be he brightest bulb, but he knew better than to suggest that to Kim. Neocon Bolton had outlived his usefulness. Good riddance!

I do wish Trump would unload Javanka. I can’t stand either one of them. They pull him to the left – First Step was their brainstorm….but that won’t happen. It’s hard to comprehend and it is laughable but I would bet Jared and Ivanka like to believe they have a career in politics after Trump.

NO matter what, Trump still does what he wants and continues to make good on his campaign promises regardless of what neocons “advise” him to do . such as not getting out of Afghanistan, not bombing the shiiiit out of Syria and not getting out of the endless wars for the reasons mentioned earlier. You are never going to change Muslims and the best you can expect for them to be is frenemies when it is mutually beneficial and then we are back to enemies again because of Islam.

I know Trump has done a lot of good but when it comes to war, he’s one of the weakest presidents ever. Iran has continued to take hostages, attack allies, capture western oil tankers and Trump does nothing. He’s telegraphing weakness.

Iran has not taken our people as hostages. Our “allies” like the EU are not really our friends. Our “allies” WANT the deal with Iran to continue building nuclear weapons while denying they are.. Not a single U.S. oil tanker was captured. Trump offered U.K., P.M. May, an escort for their oil tanker and she refused so their tanker was seized. If you will notice, it is our “allies” that want to appease Iran and are siding against Trump. Trump wants to bring Iran to their knees financially whereas France wants to give Iran a 15 billion dollar credit to keep them pursuing nuclear weapons! No thanks and that is not an allie..

I am particularly pleased with his progress on trade. Europe is still going by the Marshall Plan. That is ridiculous! Europe tariffs us and sets up trade barriers to our products and services out and we are supposed to keep ramping up trade imbalances for them. Trump sees things differently. We were being leveled down by our “allies”, China, DEMS and Republicans (through NAFTA). He is right to call China out. They are the biggest culprit in unfair trade practices. That takes balls to take them on. NAFTA given to us by the establishment is obsolete and replaced by USMCA and even if Congress wants to keep using that as a political football it is happening as an agreement. Legislating it is ideal but with the resistance Trump has, he might have to settle for an agreement. The wall is making progress through funds being shifted around and even that had to go to the Supreme Court. He tried everything to get bipartisan support and then wouldn’t budge on it.

Trump is trying to get done what he campaigned on and every single day he is shredded by the media, lied about, harassed and plotted against by the swamp and the media. I am grateful he is tough and stays the course based on what he campaigned on. I don’t think he anticipated the organized resistance by both parties in the swamp. He has exposed them for what they are and still gets things done. I will be voting for him again and grateful he puts up with all this shiiiiit.

Round and round it goes. We may never agree on the Bush/Bolton warmongering. I see no need for the US to bomb Iran for Saudi Arabia. I didn’t vote for more of that. Let the Muslims fight their own wars. If Muslims bomb OUR soil, then that is different. Then bomb the shiiit out of them.
Obliviate them. Many see it your way, so we are at an impasse. I do understand where you are coming from however we just don’t agree on this issue but there are other issues we do agree on.

Agreed….I like much of what you have to say. I can only hope that Iran and the Saudis go to war and the US and Israel stay out.

I should clarify something. Trump patterns himself after Jackson but has some Monroe Doctrine influence. What I do know for sure is the FAILED, EXPENSIVE, warmongering policy of neocon Bolton and Bush has not worked!

I can only hope that Iran and the Saudis go to war and the US and Israel stay out.

I sure agree with that one. Let Muslim countries fight it out. Stop doing their dirty work. If Israel and the U.S. are hit directly then directly respond!

I agree with much of what you say but it ignores an essential fact and that is a willingness to contain Islam rather than to completely destroy it. I look to the past to find a prologue to the future. Rome was nearly defeated by the Carthaginians worshipers of the devil Baal of which the Muslims are the inheritors. Once the Romans prevailed in the Second Punic War they completely destroyed the Carthaginians to the point that Carthage was plowed udder and the earth salted so that it could never rise again. It was only after the total annihilation of Carthage and their devil cult of Baal that Rome rose to its heights under the Republic. So it must be with Islam. It must be totally destroyed regardless of the cost in lives and treasure. Otherwise, we are doomed to extinction.

Oh, so Trump didn’t do exactly what YOU wanted, huh? You sound like a liberal. Trump is a very good STRATEGIST. You may not see who he is in his 1st, 2nd, or 3rd move, BUT WHEN YOU DO SEE HIS FINAL MOVE, it will blow you away. THAT IS WHAT TRUMP DOES.

Surprise!
