Israeli burger franchise in Dearborn delays opening, citing Arab-American ire

Burgerim opened its first location in Tel Aviv in 2011; today, the fast-food chain has more than 160 locations worldwide.

By JNS, July 24, 2019:

A non-kosher Israeli burger franchise has indefinitely delayed its opening in Dearborn, Mich., after taking heat from the Arab-American community, one of the largest in the United States.

Story continues below advertisement

The opening of Burgerim (the Hebrew plural for “burgers”) has apparently “stirred up controversy for months, striking at the heart of the charged debate over Israeli-Palestinian relations. The announced restaurant opening has elicited back-and-forth comments on Facebook posts from those spreading the message to boycott and others just hoping for a good burger,” reported the Detroit Free Press.

Burgerim opened its first location in Tel Aviv in 2011, followed by several other restaurants in Israel, as well as in the United States and Europe. To date, the fast-food chain has more than 160 locations worldwide with at least 30 more planned locations.

A franchise in Royal Oak, about 18 miles from Dearborn and also run by the same owner—Sam Zahr, a Lebanese American who resides in Dearborn—has not experienced much objection.

“I think it’s only within this area,” Zahr told the Detroit Free Press about the Dearborn residents getting fired up. “That’s why I figured, let me walk away from the problem.”

Zahr has two other locations expected to open this month: one in Redford Township and another in Oak Park, near a Chabad-Lubavitch center and significant Jewish population.

Such backlash consisted of hostile and threatening Facebook messages and comments in posts.

One Facebook message to Zahr stated, “I told you, you are not like us. You have Palestinian and Lebanese blood on your hand if you open up that joint.”

“Zahr said he has lost everything after pouring money into the Dearborn location by signing a five-year lease, having the electricity and plumbing installed, purchasing permits and licenses and paying the franchise fee,” reported the Detroit Free Press.

“It’s just for no reason. Why?” said Zahr. “We’re in America. You don’t own Dearborn.”

Dearborn activist and law professor Amer Zahr, a supporter of the anti-Israel whopper known as BDS, has led the cause against the Burgerim franchise because of where the chain was founded.

“It was offensive to many members of the community,” Zahr, also a comedian who has no relation to Sam, told the Detroit Free Press.

“Anyone has a First Amendment right to boycott whatever they wish to boycott and to call for boycotts,” he added. “A boycott, of course, comes with the potential of economic damage.”

Zahr also said that “building their company on stolen Palestinian land is how they established themselves. Whether they ended up moving [headquarters] … it doesn’t really matter. The genesis of the company was in Israel.”

Sam Zahr’s attorneys have filed a cease-and-desist against Amer Zahr for making “defamatory statements” against the food chain.

Or the Chick-Fil-A of burgers!

Just do it, make the Muslims violate the law in how they protest/respond against it, as they will suffer the consequences.

This ain’t the Middle East. At least not yet. If these Muslims get away with this, we might as well be.

WM1. Due to market concerns it may not be a good idea to open one in Dearborn. There are many other locations in that state and in other states. Finding another location, one far away may be the best action. It will be Dearborn’s loss. Putting an organization there that reviews the actions of the Muslim community, and keeps them within the boundaries of American values, may be a good idea though. Like a large chapter of ACT for America!

Let’s all wait and see American justice in action here. What is the bet that they are forced to close as we all know about the attitude of the local government there.

“Arab-American” community otherwise known as f’ing muslum community. I can’t imagine what possessed him to try and open an Israeli franchise restaurant in Dearbornistan. Did he really think the muslum compromised authorities of Dearbornistan would allow it?

Tough luck. Move back home so you don’t have to deal with it. Soon different parts of our country will be living under shari law and wars in between states for more territory. Glad I’m at the end of my life span. I sure don’t want to see where the dems will allow our country to go

This is just funny on so many levels. My buddy who is 1/2 mexican and 1/2 black had his burger joint in Dearborn regularly vandalized, bricks thrown at his car, all because he would not serve Halal meat. With a community like this built on terror and terrorism, what the hell did he expect to happen.

I’d agree and I’d only suggest extending the boycott to include businesses that pander to the f’ing muslum scum (e.g. Campbell’s soup, Coca-cola, subway).

It’s sick, but I believe 20% of Israel’s population is muslum so there’s a sound business reason for doing to, even if it’s not a moral one. Scudway has halal stores in the United Kaliphate and I no longer patronize them because of it.

I used to live in Michigan in the 60’s. I never saw one Muslim the whole time I was there. I went back and visited Port Huron in the 70’s and it was full of Muslims! Now, if you don’t see them much, THEY HAVE CREATED NO-GO ZONES where non-Muslims are not allowed to go. You risk your own life if you go into that zone and they even have their own Police, WHICH IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW, yet Michigan allows them to do so.

I think AMERICANS need to stand up and fight back against the evil in this country, no matter who it is coming from, Dems, Muslims, Rinos, Hollywood, etc..

BOYCOTT ALL MUSLIM-MADE PRODUCTS.
BOYCOTT ALL OF HOLLYWOOD.
BOYCOTT THE DEMS WHO BOYCOTT GOOD BUSINESSES. SUPPORT THOSE BUSINESSES LIKE CHICK-FIL-A, ETC..

The way to make Dearborn islamo-nazis like Amer Zahr pay for their terrorist threats is to make Ford, Dearborn’s largest employer, pay for the ignorance of its citizens. Ford builds the F150 pickup truck in Dearborn, MI. it’s by far their most profitable vehicle. They employ over 4000 people at the plant and a fair number of them are members of the Dearborn Islamo-nazi community.
The strongest and most effective response to the BDS movement is a counter-boycott. If a handful of Islamo-nazis boycott an Israel hamburger chain, no one will care but if 50,000 people boycott Ford, I assure you the Islamo-nazi citizens of Dearborn will pay for their hate in lost jobs and economic deprivation.
Ford’s been in Dearborn for a long long time. The company has spent many years making amends for Henry Ford’s anti-semitic obsession. The last thing this company wants is to be associated with the BDS movement.

I won’t be buying another Ford! I don’t want it to blow up!

I knew that about Mr. Ford. He was a friend of Hitler’s and avoided the Jews. His family after his death, tried to reverse that. BUT, any company that hires Muslims have no idea who these people REALLY ARE. If they are moderates, then they don’t actually practice ISLAM and are worthy of death, according to their Quran. So, all moderates will eventually become radical, which is what their QURAN ALREADY IS. AND THAT IS ALL ANYONE NEEDS TO KNOW.

The Palestinians never owned land and it’s a made up word. In the 5th century BCE, the Greek historian Herodotus referred by
name to Palestine as a land connecting Egypt and what is now Lebanon,
inhabited by several peoples.

It is disturbing that businesses in American now have the concerns that they do. A cake maker is heavily fined by the government for refusing to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple, in spite of the offer to make any other product. Many other kinds of businesses have similar problems. Now an Israeli owned business is facing hostile actions by the local Muslim community and their non-Muslim sheep. The local hostility could reduce the market to one insufficient for long term growth. From a strategic view, I think I would locate any store or stores planned far away. Even in another state. At a location much more positively receptive to one or more stores. By doing so I would feel much better about its prospects for long term survival and growth. When local communities start turning away potential businesses, no matter what the makeup of the population, it is a very sad state to be in. This is not American!
