Alabama Governor Signs Bill Banning Free Speech Zones From Public College Campuses

35

Absurd but necessary because of the left’s war on free speech. The whole of country is a free speech zone, if the Dems don’t like it, let them move to Iran.

It not only designates outdoor areas as an unregulated “forum for members of the campus community,” but explicitly protects “any speaker whom the institution’s student organizations or faculty have invited.”

Schools can’t use the threat of ruinous security fees, enabled by hecklers, to dissuade members of the campus community from inviting certain speakers. They are barred from charging fees based on “protected expressive activity,” the content of guest’s speech, or the “anticipated reaction or opposition” of the audience.

My colleagues and I have been banned fro college campuses these last few years. Let’s see if this moves the dial.

Alabama Governor Signs Bill Banning Free Speech Zones From Public College Campuses

By Mike LaChance, Legal Insurrection, June 8, 2019:

“after contentious debate in the House and virtually drama-free passage in the Senate”

Excellent news. Maybe this will become a trend across the country.

The College Fix reports:

Alabama governor signs bill banishing ‘free speech zones’ from public colleges

Alabama has been in the news frequently this year, and its Republican governor has just given it another reason to stand out: It’s the latest state to ban so-called free speech zones on public college campuses.

Gov. Kay Ivey signed HB 498 into law Thursday after contentious debate in the House and virtually drama-free passage in the Senate. Thanks to a Democratic amendment, public colleges will have a full year before the legislation takes effect.

According to Alabama-focused Yellowhammer News, 26 House Democrats voted against the free speech bill but only one Democratic senator did the same – after blowing up at Republican House sponsor Matt Fridy. Four Senate Democrats voted for the measure; Billy Beasley said he thought “the issue was representative of the people in my district or in the best interest of the state of Alabama.”

They are barred from letting hecklers “materially and substantially” disrupt events and must adopt “a range of disciplinary sanctions” for campus community members who disrupt.

Dang! I AM MOVING TO ALABAMA! THANK YOU, ALABAMA!

Push back conservatives in other states! PUSH THESE LEFTY COMMUNISTS BACK TO THE STONE AGE.
America has a CONSTITUTION of POSITIVE LIBERTIES and evil people want to abolish every single one of them, UNLESS it is against them.

PUSH BACK THESE COMMUNIST LIBERALS in any way you can, LEGALLY, through the courts, through our culture, through Social Media, through anything you have at your disposal. REMEMBER, once they take away your 2nd Amendment, all other Amendments will be GONE, GONE, GONE!

UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL!

Should be overturned as free speech is part of the Constitution. May need to ammend the Constitution to also clearly include states from what I undrrstand of the below

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prevents the government from making laws which respect an establishment of religion, prohibit the free exercise of religion, or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the right to peaceably assemble, or the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

That does disturb me. Why we are creating new laws to protect what we already have – freedom of speech!

Maybe what we need is a Supreme Court case to affirm that because you are not allowed freedom of speech on social media or college and universities campuses.

The Supreme Court has already done a masterly job of restricting future free speech for unborn or newly-born infants.

The corrupt DOJ will not act to defend the Constitution. That is the problem!

Arrest the seditious DOJ top brass and replace them with Judicial Watch!

Arrest the seditious FBI top brass and place all re-vetted agents under the US Marshall’s Service!

The CIA? Burn it down.

Alabama is quite a state!
LIBERAL money isn’t buying them off or intimidating them and their recently passed anti abortion law.

University of Alabama Returns $21.5 Million, Renames Law School After Donor Urged Boycott over Abortion Law
KYLE MORRIS7
June 7th, 2019
..
University of Alabama employees remove the name of Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. off the School of Law sign in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Friday, June 7, 2019. The University of Alabama board of trustees voted Friday to give back a $26.5 million donation to a philanthropist Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr., who recently

The University of Alabama has decided to return $21.5 million to a donor who suggested students should boycott the school and the state over Alabama’s new abortion ban, which had nothing to do with the university.
In a Friday morning vote by the University of Alabama’s Board of Trustees, it was announced that the university would return the multi-million dollar donation to Hugh Culverhouse Jr., the school’s largest donor, and remove his name from the law school.

In a statement released Friday, the school said the transaction to return the funds was processed Friday morning and that any accrued interest would also be returned.

“The action taken by the Board today was a direct result of Mr. Culverhouse’s ongoing attempts to interfere in the operations of the Law School,” said Kellee Reinhart, the university’s vice chancellor for communication. “That was the only reason the Board voted to remove his name and return his money.”

Stuart Bell, President of the University of Alabama, released a statement Friday evening further explaining the university’s decision to return the money to Culverhouse:

Today, the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama voted unanimously to return a donation of $21.5 million and restore the name of The University of Alabama School of Law. I wanted to make you aware of this decision and the reasons for it.This decision was made for reasons of academic and institutional integrity. I appreciate the actions of the Chancellor and our Board of Trustees and their unwavering support of these intrinsic values. You can view additional statements from the University of Alabama System here.
We value each and every donor, and it is unfortunate that an ongoing dispute led to this action. With your support, we will continue to raise the Capstone to even greater heights.

Stuart R. Bell
President

Culverhouse denied asking for the money back and also said he will “not be silenced” as he continues to protest Alabama’s abortion ban.

“I want to make clear that I never demanded that $21.5 million be refunded and wonder if the University is attempting to silence my opinions by their quick response,” Culverhouse added in his statement. “I will not be silenced.”

Culverhouse, whose parents both attended the University of Alabama, pledged the largest donation in the school’s history last September when he committed to donating $26.5 million. The university had not yet received the other $5 million.

“We will learn from this – and always remember that we cannot and will not compromise the values of academic integrity and independent administration at any price,” said university Chancellor Finis E. St. John.

Immediately after the board’s decision, Culverhouse’s name was removed from the signage outside of the law school, which has restored its name to The Univerisity of Alabama School of Law.

“Interfering douchebag?” Obviously, you have never heard of the Golden Rule: “He who has the gold makes the rules.” I know this will come as a shock to you but It’s his money, he can do with it what he wants. Because he’s opposed to the wanton murder of millions of unborn and recently born children for sex choice, family planning, eugenics or simply convenience, his money is “dirty” and his agenda is “sleazy, slimey [sic] anti-human?” If that isn’t the pot calling the kettle black.

No, it’s called exercising their right to rejectt any part of Culverhouse’s filthy money. The sword swings both ways. Godless liberals aren’t used to that because money is their god and evil is their game. People of principle are not bought. I’d call that giving Culverhouse, a dose of his own rancid medicine. People have the right to reject filth like Culverhouse and his money.

So there is only one view point now. The view point of un educated teenagers, who have never worked in their life, never bought a house and have never paid any tax but they are an authority on how everyone else should behave.
The left is being shut down slowly but remember when we regain sensible dialogue we must not forget who the left are and the damage they do, or we will be right back where we started.

Clem. Think. They are shutting down the anti-Constitution “free speech” zones because ALL OF THIS COUNTRY is a free-speech zone. They are saying free speech is welcomed throughout their campii and NEGATING the leftists’ attempts to stifle speech unless “approved.” Your comment is well taken, but the state of Alabama just took a stand for the Constitution, which is the point.
