Middlebury College Cancels Lecture on Totalitarianism by Conservative Philosopher

The threat of protests on campus caused the school to rescind its invitation to the speaker. They don’t need to learn about totalitarianism, because they’re already practicing it.

The Washington Free Beacon reports:

Middlebury College Cancels Conservative Philosopher’s Lecture on Totalitarianism

Middlebury College has canceled a campus speech by conservative Polish Catholic philosopher Ryszard Legutko in response to planned protests by liberal activists.

A professor of philosophy at Jagiellonian University and a member of the European Parliament, Legutko was scheduled to speak Wednesday at the Vermont college’s Alexander Hamilton Forum, delivering a lecture entitled “The Demon in Democracy: Totalitarian Temptations in Free Societies.” A member of the anti-Communist Polish resistance during the Cold War, Legutko warns that western democracy is also susceptible to creep towards totalitarianism.

But in the days leading up to the speech, some Middlebury students and professors wrote an open letter demanding the university rescind its sponsorship. The liberal activists took issue with Legutko’s pointed critiques of multiculturalism, feminism, and homosexuality, calling them “homophobic, racist, xenophobic, [and] misogynistic.”

“Inquiry, equity, and agency cannot be fostered in the same space that accepts and even elevates homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic discourse,” they demand. “Bigotry of any kind should not be considered a form of inquiry.”

A college that should cultivate inquiring minds instead seems intent on producing narrow minds incapable of considering anything beyond their own worldview. I understand- ignorance is easier.

Today’s conservatives are the homophobes/transphobes, racists, xenophobes, Islamophobes, antisemites and misogynists. And their leader is Trump.

Anybody with that type of intolerant attitude (and I am talking about these “students” now) should not be allowed anywhere near a voting booth. This suggests they favor the war against the family, men, Judeo-Christian morality and Western civilization in general.

Let’s be real here, people who call themselves conservatives these days are really authoritarians. They are the opposite of liberal. It wasn’t always that way though. Ronald Reagan used to be the standard bearer of Republican conservatism. Today, he would be seen as a leftie liberal ‘RINO’.

So whatever happened to the party of Reagan and Eisenhower? At one time the GOP used to be the more liberal party. Now it’s the party of Trump, Steve King, Bannon, David Duke, Richard Spencer and the ‘alt right’ nazis. There’s even a new classification of terrorist, the ‘MAGA terrorists’ (Nick Cruz, the MAGAbomber, Bisonette, etc).

Deviation from the totalitarian view is forbidden.

Totalitarianism is a form of government that attempts to assert total control over the lives of its citizens. It is characterized by strong central rule that attempts to control and direct all aspects of individual life through coercion and repression. It does not permit individual freedom. Traditional social institutions and organizations are discouraged and suppressed, making people more willing to be merged into a single unified movement. Totalitarian states typically pursue a special goal to the exclusion of all others, with all resources directed toward its attainment, regardless of the cost. https://www.britannica.com/topic/totalitarianism

It’s in Vermont, for anyone who doesn’t know. I had to leave this site go to a site linked here and read into that piece to determine where this place is located. [Edit: does it make a difference? That depends on how much laundry one has. I don’t do laundry, throw the closes off my back when I replace them, but have spares for emergencies…. but this isn’t about me. I’m trying to save my country.]

Many have tried to answer that question … and I too am at a loss.

But from first hand experience with Leftists, I guess the most plausible and probable explanations are …

1) psychosis or demonic influence,

2) demonic influence or psychosis, or

3) a combination of Nos 1 and 2.

The adults at the school lost control over two years ago and haven’t gotten it back yet. Look up what happened when Charles Murray tried to speak there in 2017, and not only was he hounded off the stage and out of the venue, but a Middlebury professor who was with him was injured. In other words, “real violence”. The new Alexander Hamilton Forum was an attempt – by the adults – to create a forum where students could be exposed to ideas that might challenge their thinking, and this had been planned as one of the premiere events, but … no. MAS makes a cogent observation.

Perhaps the “high” point in clarity of thought and social progress in UK society evolved during the years 1914-60 when as a direct consequence of two of the most destructive and expensive wars, society achieved a better balance in the work life equation by women gaining the right to vote {because of their efforts in wartime} , their function as actual and potential home makers and mothers was recognised and aided, and advances in medical help with a wider direct cost free provision was possible for the working man for the first time.

There were jobs aplenty with training in all essential skills and trades for the many not the few as well because society was able to focus on our needs to repair and provide without the socialist or liberal inspired “guilt burden”of “saving the third world” or indeed competition with the rest of the world based upon the cheapness of their labour and plentiful supply of it undermining our own society. The concept of a first world developed nation state was paramount at that time.

What replaced this developed application of logical commonsense thinking was the emergence of a “rights and entitlement” culture based not on what could be the product of honest productive labour, saving while doing without, but a more socialist culture of guilt, exploitation, a “for every winner there must be one who suffers” concept.

This new trend was of course a manifestation of cultural Marxism and it found a ready made home in higher education halls, politics and media. Most of us remember the great surge in new post war musical and arts talent which appeared in the UK starting in the early sixties when the swinging London scene was recognised celebrated and copied around the world, but riding on the back of that wave were the seeds of a weakening of recognition of the common sense ability to recognise the difference and relationship between freedom, licence, responsibility, human and personal obligation and the consequence for ones actions.

I evolved as a consequence of much thought a simple way to recognise how the conflicts and contradictions around such issues could be recognised in my own home town, {this can be applied by anyone else too}.

I studied closely maps of my town I knew very well, and I could identify by the layout of streets, the provision of parks and other public open spaces together with other characteristics like the straightness and logical order in residential streets and roads when such developments took place. The most ordered neighborhoods where parks were provided, and the houses all faced the same way along largely straight roads were the legacy of late Victorian,Edwardian and “between the two wars” Britain. This was very much a “black is black and white is white” period.

During the sixties and particularly today, houses became like scattered toys along roads which resembled spaghetti.
Parks were missing entirely, they were replaced with acres of bare grass football pitches devoid of interest. This trend in urban planning can still be seen, it reflects much of the arising societal conflicts and reevaluations combined with lower personal standards of the time.

I attributed this to more “liberal” younger planning minds inside those who had never had to perform military service in days of empire or wartime or pitch tents in straight lines or even try to survive under difficult circumstances under the eye of the enemy or senior NCO’s who were well known for THEIR uncomplicated logical thinking..

The willingness and ability to create a personal “timeline” by the application of history and logic can be useful today, it has the ability to order, direct and focus thoughts essential if we need to understand “how we got to where we are” kind of thing.

The real problem is that of weak college administrators caving in to every Leftist threat. Every time they yield to Leftist shut-down words (‘racist’, etc) they diminish the Conservative cause. Administrators don’t have to concede at every skirmish, they should assert ‘free speech on campus’ and stand firm…
