We are both a democracy and a federation of states. The Electoral College was designed specifically to prevent the tyranny of big states over small states, as was the U.S. Senate, which affords all states, large and small, equal representation. If we do away with the Electoral College, we might as well do away with the Senate.
In 2016, the Electoral College worked precisely as intended. It prevented Hillary Clinton’s 6-million-vote victory in California and New York from cancelling her 3-million-vote loss in the 48 other states.
The second knock on the Electoral College is that voters in most states feel their votes don’t matter, that the entire contest is waged in a handful of swing or “battleground” states.
Story continues below advertisementYet, if we did away with the Electoral College in favor of the national popular vote, the election would still be decided in a handful of states — populous states such as California and New York. Even though both of those states are deep blue, the GOP candidate would still fish in their waters, because swinging 1 or 2 percent into the red column would be worth more than swinging 1 to 2 percent in a smaller state. Voters in small states, such as Connecticut, would be permanently and completely disenfranchised.
Moreover, candidates would campaign in big media markets (which, of course, are in big states) in order to reach as many potential voters as efficiently as possible. This would favor media personalities and celluloid campaigns. Candidates would never have to meet voters one-on-one, as they do currently in small swing states. (The Hill)

SUPREME COURT TO DECIDE IF STATES CAN PROSECUTE ILLEGALS FOR IDENTITY THEFT

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case on whether states can prosecute illegal aliens for identity theft. Kansas recently convicted three illegal aliens for identity theft, for using stolen Social Security numbers in order to obtain work.
The state Supreme Court, struck the convictions, saying that only the federal government can prosecute them for identity theft, even though they use those IDs to defraud the states. This means at least 4 justices voted to take the case. They would not do that if they agreed with the Kansas Supreme Court.
They will hear the case during the next session, which begins in October.

The case involves three foreign nationals (ILLEGALS)— Ramiro Garcia, Donaldo Morales and Guadalupe Ochoa-Lara — who entered the country illegally. The trio used stolen Social Security numbers when applying for work in the service industry. All three were convicted of identity theft in Kansas courts.
Those convictions were reversed on appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court. A four-justice majority said that a federal statute called the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) prohibits states from pursuing such prosecutions. The Kansas court held that IRCA gives the federal government exclusive power to bring prosecutions that use information from the I-9, a federal form used to confirm employment eligibility. Social Security numbers are included on the I-9.

New York’s newest congresswoman, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has been quick to jump onto this bandwagon, recently labeling the Electoral College a “shadow of slavery’s power on America.” Others have called it a “living symbol of America’s original sin,” an “antiquated relic of slavery,” or even a “pro-slavery compromise.”

The Electoral College had everything to do with balancing power between large and small states in America’s new experiment in self-governance. It had nothing to do with slavery. What an inconvenient truth for those who would like to eliminate the system.

The electoral college was created so that corrupt population centers, located on each coast in today’s modern setting, would not be calling the shots for the rest of us, thus every vote counts.

The Electoral College was created to protect the minority populations everywhere. Same with the original election of the Senate being by the States. ( which the 17th Amendment completely destroyed — it was pushed by Socialist Pres Wilson and the Progressives in 1913).
The Electoral College was all about protecting smaller populations from the tyranny of the Mob. It was and is to insure EVERYBODY’S voice is heard.
