MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In the dead of the cold, late night on Tuesday, a young Somali man was shot in the hip. Someone took him to the local trauma center, left him there, and drove off.
Story continues below advertisementThe man told police at his bedside that he didn’t know who shot him, who took him to the hospital, or why he was targeted. “I’m intoxicated,” he told cops, while doctors tended his wound, before insisting he didn’t know anything else about what happened.
For the attending police officers, it was a frustrating, albeit familiar, response from a member of the Somali community, whose support in November sent one of their own, Rep. Ilhan Omar, to Congress. While Omar has spoken out frequently and forcefully on a range of issues – some that seem little connected to her district – most members of the Somali community she represents remain far more insular.
The national epidemic of shootings involving young African-American men in America’s cities certainly isn’t unique to Minneapolis. But some officers here believe issues of cultural assimilation involving the Somali immigrant community, and a struggle on both sides to better communicate law enforcement’s mandate to protect and serve, makes it a particularly imposing challenge. One that politicians like Omar, they say, could do much more to effectively address.
“When they come here, they come with their own experiences of not trusting the police, and from a place where the police are known to be corrupt. And the challenge for us lies in trying to get them to cooperate,” said one law enforcement officer. “They’ll often call 911 when they need help. But when we come, they often won’t then tell us who is causing the problem so we can take action or stop the crime from happening again.”
“Our goal is to have a good relationship with the community, we try to engage but it’s proving to be a tough egg to crack,” another officer underscored.
According to data compiled last year by the Washington Post, more than half of all homicides statewide in Minnesota go unsolved. And that’s in part because Somali-Americans in Minneapolis aren’t talking enough to police, according to officers.
The Somali community grew here rapidly here during the 1990s, when large numbers of Somalis fled a devastating civil war. The community has since grown with the addition of U.S.-born children of those refugees – as has the debate over the Somalis’ desire and ability to culturally assimilate.
Minnesota is now home to one the largest Somali communities in the global diaspora, with an estimated 100,000 living in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood is the center of the Somali community – and is fondly nicknamed “Little Mogadishu” – for its array of Somali-centered organizations, businesses, and mosques.
Last year, it was announced that massive security upgrades totaling some $825,000 were coming to the major government-funded apartment complex in Cedar-Riverside, to “address resident safety concerns.” Part of the plan was to place a six-foot perimeter fence at the Cedar High Apartments, a complex owned and managed by Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, and for many, the central meeting point for the community.
While supported by some, others expressed their concerns the fence would only further isolate the Somali population, and hinder their ability to work with them and make the area safer.
Some investigators lament the difficulties in rooting out gang violence that remains a problem in not just the Somali community, but neighboring areas. The proper dismantling of the gangs, police stress, is a two-way street. Gang activity now is no longer centered on larger outfits like MS-13, or the Crips. Much more common here are smaller gangs with names like “Somali Mafia,” “Somali Outlaws,” “Young n’ Thuggin (YNT)” and even the “Taliban.”
“It’s hard for any community to assimilate and to immediately transform from the life they knew. But the distrust is only getting worse,” said an area law enforcement official. “The gang violence is only getting worse. Not only do crimes go unsolved, but many don’t get reported at all.”
But Jeanine Brudenell, the former Minneapolis Police Department’s Somali liaison officer, who retired in 2017, believes gang violence has waned somewhat. She acknowledged that while the “huge fear of police and government” has made efforts to protect the community, the right steps are being put in place in terms of community relations.
In recent years, the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) has sought to do more community outreach, and bring into the fold more Somali officers. The department currently has eight ethnic Somalis serving as officers.
“The City of Minneapolis has the largest Somali population, per capita, in the United States. The Minneapolis Police Department strongly believes that a police department that reflects the community it serves is an important first step in building trust,” John Elder, Minneapolis Police Department Public Information Officer told Fox News. “When Somali residents see officers that look like them, on patrol and detectives in investigation units, they are more likely have the confidence the MPD will understand their culture and background.”…

A top contributor to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) helped sponsor a “No War On Iran” campaign, which featured calls for Israel to give up its nuclear weapons.
Omar, who recently was condemned by Democratic leadership in the House for anti-Semitic comments on Twitter and forced to apologize, has received $6,000 from Home Creations, a homebuilder in Oklahoma.
The company was Omar’s sixth highest contributor, behind liberal groups MoveOn.org, SEIU, and Emily’s List, among others. Omar’s office did not respond to request for comment about the donations.
Jalal and Mohammad Farzaneh, brothers and natives of Iran, founded Home Creations in 1981. They have contributed heavily to Democrats over the past two decades. Jalal Farzaneh recently shared articles defending Omar on social media for “telling the truth about the Israel lobby.”
Jalal Farzaneh appeared as a member of the group “Americans Against the Next War” in a 2012 campaign asking the Oklahoma City area to call congress to “resist calls for war on Iran.”
The group put up three billboards that read, “Tell Congress, NO WAR ON IRAN.” At an event announcing the campaign, Farzaneh argued there was no evidence Iran was building nuclear weapons.
“Our generals and secretary of defense confirm that Iran is not building nuclear weapons,” he said. “We ask Congress to say no to a war on Iran based on faulty intelligence, and to not put our troops in harm’s way. A war with Iran would not serve America’s interests.”
Another attendee of the event suggested Israel should abandon its nuclear weapons, and said it was hypocritical to warn against Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon while turning “a blind eye” to Israel.
“Frankly, I am opposed to nuclear weaponry in any nation’s arsenal,” said Rev. Bruce Prescott, an ally of Americans Against the Next War. “As long as the world turns a blind eye to nuclear weapons in Pakistan and Israel, it is hypocritical to be alarmed about the possibility that Iran might acquire them. We need to be working for the nuclear disarmament of all nations.”
The billboard campaign was featured in a newsletter published by the Peace House Oklahoma City, a “center for education and nonviolent action on issues relating to human rights, economic justice, environmental sustainability, and nonviolence.”
At the press conference announcing the billboards, Nathaniel Batchelder, director of Peace House, railed against neoconservatives and “elite war cheerleaders” who were “ratcheting up” warmongering against Iran.
When asked who specifically was behind the “fear mongering,” Batchelder blamed Israel.
“Well, we know that Israel is very uncomfortable with the idea that any nation that they believe wishes them ill, would even have a nuclear power plant,” he said.
“We know there are people inside Israel and inside the United States who believe a military strike is justified right now,” Batchelder said. “Because they don’t believe Iran should have the capacity to enrich uranium at all.”

It is a magnet for more “migrants”, “abandoned kids” no deportations, guaranteed legal representation and even safe transportation to get here and other goodies for the anti American reps we vote in. Thanks to the voters, the majority in Congress are DEMS and we have too many DEMS posing as Republicans in the Senate – lead by swamp king McConnell. Trump declaring a national emergency will also be challenged but the good news is that maybe Piglosi won’t think a wall is “immoral” but with lack of funding and restrictions to bollard fencing, they will easily get through our unprotected border. The swamp wants us flooded with people that will offer nothing. Our standard of living will decline as well as prosperity and it will be never ending if chain migration is not stopped and with what is in D.C. that will continue too.

After 8 weeks of back-and-forth theatrics between Pres. Trump and Democratic Leaders (that included a 5-week partial government shutdown), the President received $75 million more in border wall funding than what Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer offered in December.
The cost for obtaining the additional $75 million for fencing was far too high — a substantial weakening of interior enforcement, including an incentive for illegal-alien sponsors of unaccompanied alien children (UACs).
These sponsors often are the very people who actually paid the cartels to smuggle the children into the United States, putting them at great risk of kidnapping, sexual assault, murder, or even being abandoned in the desert to die. According to ICE, close to 80% of the sponsors or household members of sponsors of the 224,000 UACs HHS has released since 2014 are in the country illegally. While most smugglers face felony charges for smuggling, this provision would exempt these sponsors — even if they have been convicted of certain other crimes — from the consequences of their immigration crimes.
The 1,169-page bill also includes:
an increase in H-2B guest worker visas;
a reduction in detention beds used by ICE to hold criminal aliens and illegal border crossers; and
a hiring freeze for ICE’s Enforcement and Removals Operations division.
BORDER TOWNS CAN VETO FENCING
Even Pres. Trump’s border wall funding comes with a major condition. Local governments are given the authority to decide on design and location of any border barriers built within their communities. In other words, local border politicians, many of which are funded by the drug cartels, have veto power over new border barriers.
With this “deal”, one thing is clear. The open-borders wing in Congress understands the danger that interior enforcement has on deterring future illegal immigration, so they’re set on dismantling it.
