Bowers on collecting: The 2018 Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo

By Q. David Bowers

As you read these words I am getting ready to go to the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore next week from Wednesday the 24th through Saturday. What a nice event this will be! Guaranteed! It always is!

On the program is the annual meeting of the Colonial Coin Collectors Club, founded in 1993, and now with several hundred enthusiastic members. Complementing this will be a grand auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries featuring outstanding colonial coins including in the Archangel Collection, plus two memorable currency collections — the Joel Anderson Collection Part 3 — with many incredible rarities as well as affordable items, and the Caine Collection of federal Proof notes. Each of these is definitive. Beyond that, there are many federal coins from half cents to double eagles, commemoratives, and more — plus additional paper money. If you are looking for it, chances are we have it.

That is not all. A dynamic bourse with hundreds of dealers from all over America awaits you. The Expo, as always, is held in the Baltimore Convention Center in the Inner Harbor area — with many fine hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions.

The Expos are held three times a year — spring, summer, and autumn — and are among the most popular shows on the circuit. You’re cordially invited to attend. If you do and want to chat, track me down on Thursday (my most open day).

If you wish to reach out to me for commentary, questions, or suggestions, I can be contacted via e-mail at qdbarchive@metrocast.net.

@Anthony,” There is also no reason to expect the 2019 “enhanced” proof Kennedy half dollar to be anything other than a copper-clad coin.
The purpose of a special 2 coin set is to make a special LOW PRICE POINT product.
    Period.”

IF I was a gambling man (which I am) I would gamble that the Kennedy in the set would be in Silver and that it would Not be a Low Price Point.

100,000 is WAY too Low a Mintage for a clad and would be WAY too Low a Price point for a 100,000 mintage offering for this subject.

The US Mint would be leaving a Boatload of money on the table if they did an enhanced reverse proof Kennedy in clad…

OT – For ATB S-mint collectors, sales of the GRC S-mint quarter are exactly equal to the Ozark Riverway S-mint quarter, 906,840. So it looks like Ozark will be low mintage after the 2017 issues are gone from the mint website,.

A proof clad Apollo half dollar + An enhanced proof 2019 Kennedy half + packaging could retail for $49.95 and make for a very affordable product for the general public. A low price point product will move more of the authorized combined maximum mintage of 750,000 for Apollo proof & uncirculated halves.

How did TV guy have 2018s limited edition proof set on TV 2 days before they came out on the 18th,and had around 500 sets all the Eagles were graded?? Talking about HSN

Datadave, The last time I did the numbers it looked like that would happen. And you know, as we’ve had some interesting USM releases i’m getting the feeling some interest may be picking up. Now i’m wondering if we’ve seen the low in “S” mintage. For now i’m going to stay a bear and expect lower still.

Coin World article said the 2019 Apollo Commemorative half and Special Enhanced proof Kennedy set will both be clad. Kind of reminds me of the 2014 special clad Kennedy 50th anniversary set. I bought one of those, I think it was only $9.95. For clad coins they were really nice. I think this should be a nice set for gifts!
