Are You A Worrier?

Are you a worrier? We see in the book of Ruth what Ruth did when her life was uncertain. Plus I give you 10 verses for when you are worried. #Biblestudy #John #WomensBibleStudy #GoodMorningGirls

Are you a worrier?

Do you torment yourself with disturbing thoughts?

The word “worry” means to allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles.

If you are a worrier or if you know someone like this – then this video is for you! Join me as we discuss the topic of worry and how it relates to Ruth.

I saw this quote recently on Facebook that said:

Worry is a conversation you have with yourself about things you cannot change.
Prayer is a conversation you have with God about things He can change.

God wants us to take every worry to him in prayer.

And God commands us to love him with all of our heart, soul, strength…and MIND!  It’s in our mind that worry pops up and takes over.  We must not let our minds run wild!

To combat worry we must read God’s word, meditate on God’s word, memorize God’s word, pray God’s word and STAND on the promises of God’s word!

I was recently talking to my 15 year old son about studying my Bible and I told him – “Do you know what one of the greatest benefits of reading God’s Word is?  I know God’s voice.”

You see – I know clearly when a thought is not from God.  I can detect the lies of the enemy. I can detect when a thought does not match the voice of God only because I’ve been reading and studying the Bible.

2 Corinthians 10:5 says:

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.

Thoughts that are filled with worry and anxiety – do not come from God!

It is our job to sift through our thoughts and take thoughts captive.  If a thought does not match the words of the Bible, we must destroy it and make it obedient to Christ and we can’t make it obedient to Christ, if we don’t know what his word says!

So let’s look at God’s word.

Here’s 10 verses that you can replace your worry with…

1.) Remember to pray.  Prayer leads to peace.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
~Philippians 4:6,7
2.)  Do not let your heart be troubled. Do not be afraid.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let NOT your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
~John 14:27
3.) Throw your burdens on God.
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
~Psalm 55:22
4.) Trust that God is leading you on the path that is best for you.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
~Proverbs 3:5,6
5.)  When you feel fear welling up inside of you – stop – put your trust in God.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
~Psalm 56:3
6.)  You are not alone. God is with you.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
~Isaiah 41:10
7.)  Have faith. God will take care of you.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?  And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
~Matthew 6:25-30
8.)  Each day has enough trouble so stay focused on today and do not worry about tomorrow.
Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
~Matthew 6:34
9.)  God is with you.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
~Psalm 23:4
10.) Call on the Lord.  He is on your side!
Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free. 6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?
~Psalm 118:5,6

  1. Courtney, thank you for pointing us to these specific verses to remind us to not worry. I found myself actually singing 6 of them as they are listed on “The Seeds of Courage” CD (Seeds of Family Worship line) I bought for my son 10 years ago to help him (and me) memorize scripture. The catchy little tunes are still in my head and amazingly still pop into my mind at just the right time.

  2. Thank you Courtney! This was a great reminder today. I too am more of a worrier then a warrior and have been working this year to change that behavior. Thanks for the verses to help along the way.

  3. Love these! I am such a worrier. I’m going through a bad divorce. I’m scared, tired exasperated and angry. He should not have any time with our son, but the state didn’t think his background was enough to keep him away, and the things he’s done to me i never reported to the police . He has a good guy image, but he
    is a liar and abusive.

    1. Dawn,
I can relate to what you are going through. My first marriage was the same experience. Stay encouraged. All the verses Courtney posted are life, but Proverbs 3:5,6 always (and still does) spoke to me the most while going through all I had went through. I will keep you and your son in my prayers.

      God bless.
      Christy

  4. I tend to worry about my children when they are away from me. God revealed to me one day in prayer that he loves them more than I do! I was stunned by this revelation. He is going to give his angels charge over them when they are out of my sight. I also started thanking God and proclaiming scripture over their lives.

  5. As someone who comes from a family of worries, these scriptures always speak to me. Even after reading them several times in my life, I love to mediate on them again. This is very powerful. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Thank you, Courtney. This is just what I needed to hear today. I’ve been diagnosed with complications in an early pregnancy and I am so worried we are going to lose the baby. We lost our last baby to different complications and I just want to give my worry up to the Creator and be thankful that today I am pregnant and there is hope for this new life. In have to be like Ruth and faithfully wait. I ready have no other choice. I want my warrior spirit to shine through (even from my bed rest!). Prayers for all of you.

  7. Courtney you’re so beautiful inside and out I just love you to pieces! You make me laugh and smile with your honesty. Keep it up girl. You’re doing a great job as a mom and daughter of the King. God bless you!

  8. I’m a Brit living in Europe and found myself this week having a complete “looking over the edge into the abyss” worry-fest about what Brexit might mean for us in practical terms – real, serious, heartbeat-getting-faster worries about big issues like finance, housing, pensions and so on. So I’m really grateful for this solid, sensible, Biblical reminder that the Lord has it all under control and that we are in His hands. Thank you, Courtney, for blowing the fresh breeze of Gospel truth back into my mind.

  9. I am so happy I got this post emailed to me today. I really needed it! I’ve been worrying about a relationship in my life that I have no control over and I keep saying I’m going to lay it at God’s feet, but then I pick it back up and obsess over it. Thank you for the practical tips to cast my fear away and trust in the Lord!

  10. Read this just when I needed it! To a fellow traveler!! It sooooo helped! Thank you!! It’s amazing what Gods word will do to our worries! 😉

  11. I read this a week late but thought the post and video were among your best. Excellent instruction on how to overcome worry and an outstanding list of scriptures to turn to and try to memorize. Thanks for easing some of my concerns. I will bookmark this post and use it often. Bless you! Also, thanks for explaining that it was acceptable for a woman in Ruth’s time to lie at a man’s feet. Please add more historical references like that to your lessons! Many thanks ????

  12. Thank you Courtney and to your mom for blessing me with the in depth study of Ruth. I gained more understanding and hope from it please continue to make more of these studies!

  13. Muchas gracias Courtney.
Dios bendiga tu vida y tu ministerio.
    God bless you!
