Many in Australia are calling for their government to protect its citizen’s “basic human right” to freedom of speech. A rally has been planned outside Melbourne’s Facebook office on International Free Speech Day, the 6th of October, where the banned senator plans to address the crowd.

FACEBOOK has taken down Fraser Anning’s page, sparking outrage from the Katter’s Australian Party senator.
Senator Anning had posted a series of statements and videos on the page calling for a ban on Muslim migration to Australia

“Free speech is under attack and communication is being regulated by foreign companies with tendencies of political bias,” the Queensland senator wrote on Twitter on Friday.
“This is completely unacceptable and we will fight this.”
Facebook has an appeals process in regard to its “Pages Terms”. The company declined to comment on whether complaints triggered the page removal.
Facebook employs dedicated teams and technical systems to detect misuse of the social media platform, as well as “harmful conduct towards others, and situations where we may be able to help support or protect our community”.

Everyone says to just forget Facebook, but no other social platform has a comparable audience. It would take a sea change of people leaving Facebook in droves to create any real change, and since Facebook is really more about sharing photos and stupid videos with friends and family, that is unlikely to happen.

actually, it is a communications entity which makes it subject to regulation by government. it is not a duchy. it is more like a public utility. so no it can’t just do what it wants as you put it.
