A German tank unit was forced to use broomsticks as mock weapons during a 2015 Nato exercise, picturedIt comes as Donald Trump has vowed to make Chancellor Angela Merkel increase her defence spending to reach the minimum spending obligations all Nato members must adhere to.
General Harald Kujat, a former chief of staff of the German armed forces, later described it as a “huge embarrassment”.
The unit was supposed to be ready to deploy whenever a Nato member was threatened, he warned.
He added: “If that is not the case, then both for Nato, and for the Federal Republic of Germany, this is a huge embarrassment,” The Telegraph reported.
The country’s military has become a laughing stock for its shortages and underfunding
And a spokesperson for the Defence Ministry stated: “In the case of the Boxer armoured vehicle, it was being used as a mobile headquarters, and a weapon is not foreseen and not necessary for a mobile headquarters.
“It was not a fighting vehicle. So we have no explanation why the soldiers would simulate a weapon.”
In 2015 it also emerged the German military was using ordinary civilian Mercedes vans as stand-ins for armoured personnel carriers.
And The Times today reports all six of the country’s submarines were recently put out of service at the same time due to various repairs.
Andreas Krause, the German navy’s inspector, said: “It does not frustrate me but it is very annoying.

They may have tree word that mean the same as one of ours or vice versa Luftwaffe luftkräfte. Both mean air force. One is military the other is the force made by air! In English we have one phrase that is defined by how it’s used. Russian air force, Russische Luftwaffe. British air force, Britische Luftwaffe. American air force, Amerikanische Luftwaffe, Greek air force, Griechische Luftwaffe. Greek name for their air force is war aviation. and refer to all other countries air forces the same “war aviation”

5 years agoI am not surprised. I wish I’d bookmarked it. About 18 months ago a survey in Germany showed that 2/3 of Germans do NOT believe in Article 5 of NATO, i.e., going to the armed defense of a fellow NATO member.
Also between France, Germany, Czech Republic they have, combined, LESS tanks than the Russians have in Eastern Ukraine (Donbas) in the small area Russia occupies in a war against Ukraine.

And Germany has a history and reputation for making some of the world’s most famous military weaponry, like the Mauser combat rifle of WWII notoriety.

Germany is using up their money to pay for MUSLIMS -refugees and migrants!!! Time for Merkel to PAY UP. We need to bring most of our troops home and more some to Poland and other countries that PAY for our protection. Germany is taking us for granted. 5 years agoWhen all the countries stop funding their new no working Muslim refugees, they can finally start paying for their own protection. Many times America came to the aid of it’s Allies, only to latter be declared the bully by those needing the protection. NATO hasn’t followed their own charter for decades. Give them hell Trump. Why should they financially support those(Russia fuel lines) they claim to want protecting from?
