Boning up on the Crusades a couple of years ago, for the first time since I was a teen, I came away with the suspicion that the Fourth Crusade was the result of a Muslim influence operation, involving Italian city states, some of which in that era were involved in the slave trade in a major way, selling to the Muslims on the other side of the Med.

The influence operation idea is an educated hunch, reading between the lines of the history books, and being someone with a knowledge of current events, who is also familiar with the historical writings of luminaries such as Robert Spencer and Emmet Scott.

Look at the fundamental question concerning the Fourth Crusade, why did a crusade called for the purpose of assaulting Mohammedans on their home turf, in part to defend the Empire, wind up attacking Christians in Europe and gravely damaging the Empire? Then ask “Cui bono?”
