New Jersey: Syrian migrants sue feds and landlord over government-funded housing complaints

Oh yes, I am sure their accommodations in Syria (if they actually are from Syria) were vastly superior.

More overwhelming grace and thankfulness from a grateful people who sought our shores to escape …… superior housing.

Syrian refugees sue landlord and feds over housing complaints

By Ann Corcoran, Refugee Resettlement Watch, May 5, 2018

Story continues below advertisement

Syrian ‘refugee’ safe in New Jersey had to shell out $200 of his own money to fix the heating in his US government funded apartment. Imagine that, Syrian temporary ‘refugees’ say their government funded housing is dirty and bug-infested and so they hired a lawyer to fight for their ‘rights’ to better government funded housing in Paterson, NJ.

You will see that the story is about Syrians apparently granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Those would be people who got in to the US on their own somehow and miraculously were able to sign up for TPS.

These are apparently not refugees selected and screened through the UN/US Refugee Admissions Program.

I did know that the usual refugees we fly in get help with housing, but I did not know that TPS recipients get housing help from the US taxpayer too

Now to the news at Reuters:

Syrian refugees take U.S. landlord, government to court over claims of filthy housing

A few snips:

NEW YORK (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Lina Alhomsi and her family, all Syrian refugees, recently awoke in the middle of the night to the sight and sounds of a drunken man breaking through the roof of their New Jersey apartment.

Fed up with the living conditions, she and seven other refugee families this week filed a federal lawsuit against their landlord and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, claiming neglect, uninhabitable living conditions, breach of contract and emotional distress.

More than 6 million people have been uprooted from their homes in war-ravaged Syria, many living in dire conditions in temporary camps and settlements in the Middle East.

Many of those who made it to the United States like the Alhomsi family, among the roughly 7,000 Syrians with temporary protected status***, hoped for better.

Alhomsi, her husband and four children have lived in the Paterson, New Jersey apartment, some 50 miles northwest of New York City, since they arrived in the United States nearly two years ago.

The other refugee families suing also live in buildings owned by the same landlord in the run-down neighborhood, complaining of leaking ceilings, cockroaches, mice and bedbugs.

[….]

Another refugee signed onto the lawsuit, Mohammad Hilal, who fled his hometown of Daraa, Syria, said the bed bugs, roaches and mice are causing mental health problems and conflicts for his family.

The refugee families live in the United States under the federal government’s Temporary Rental Assistance, which pays for their housing for a limited period of time.

Kevin appleby

Appleby was formerly the lobbyist for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Search his name here at RRW for more about him.

Their future is clouded by President Donald Trump’s administration which has shown deep skepticism toward the program established by Congress in 1990 to provide temporary reprieve for immigrants whose home countries face disaster or conflict.

[….]

“This is not something I’ve heard of before, but I welcome it,” said Kevin Appleby, senior director of International Migration Policy at the Center for Migration Studies in New York.

“It’s always been a challenge to find housing for refugees,” he said.

[….]

According to the families, the landlord’s office accused them of being “dirty.”

[….]

But others like Waheed Safour, who lives with his two children, say they are hopeful the case will bring some change.

In his apartment, the heating broke down for 10 days last winter and no one came to fix it, he said. Safour said he spent more than $200 of his own money to solve the problem.

How outrageous is that, why weren’t the US taxpayers on the hook for that $200 as well??? After all, these are special people!

More at Reuters here.

By the way, one of the leading proponents of more Syrian refugees to the US is NJ Dem Bill Pascrell who represents the district that includes Paterson.  He was a former mayor of the city.

***For more on Temporary Protected Status for Syrians see my posts here.  How did all those Syrians, who now have TPS, get in to the US in the first place? Does Homeland Security ask?

The problem could be solved if the Trump Admin ends TPS for Syrians just as it is doing for others—Hondurans, Haitians, Salvadorans.

Correct me if I’m wrong but these ingrates are funded, clothed, housed and provided healthcare by taxpayers so this “$200 of his own money” is not his money.
IT”S THE TAXPAYERS MONEY.
Burn that shitholian infested ghetto to the ground and ship these inbred ingrate savage syrian barbarians back to their 3rd world shithole they slithered from.
Phuck them all, who cares?

Patterson NJ is a total shiiiithole. We should send them BACK to their previous superior accommodations. So they still think OBAMA is in charge? Then again with the LIBERAL DEM governor we have now, they will probably be successful in their lawsuit. The present governor wants Community College to be for FREE! Yes, like DeBlazio, it needs to be FREE! All I know is we have only three years left in this state and then it’s permanent adios time! Let other PAY for the FREE stuff.

What you might not fully appreciate is that the landlord is getting paid market value rent for the apartment thanks to the generosity of the American people, and perhaps even higher than market rate, no matter what the tenants are paying or not paying. That’s what the subsidy is about.

So regardless of what you think about the refugees and that situation, (I’m opposed to bringing refugees to the US because of the language and cultural differences, lack of identity verification, lack of benefit to the US economy), the landlord is ripping off the taxpayers if he is failing to maintain the building. If memory serves, Imam Rauf was running a similar scam of taking money to provide low income housing but not maintaining habitable buildings. Who is the landlord in this case?

Updated: The landlord is Charles Florio, a major developer in Paterson, NJ. who has been buying and renovating distressed properties in the worst neighborhoods of Paterson. After reading about him and watching a video interview I doubt he is a negligent landlord. see: https://www.northjersey.com/videos/news/passaic/paterson/2017/06/20/interview-paterson-developer-charles-florio/103033910/

I was also curious what lawyer would be willing to represent the refugees? The article quotes the spokeswomen for the plaintiffs Hend El-Buri, who is connected with the charity organization called Smile for Charity. One of the Board Members is Tariq Hussain, Esq. who worked on the Six Imams case (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_imams_incident), and perhaps he’s their lawyer. https://www.haklawfirm.com/attorneys-2/tariq-hussain/

Section 8 housing is VERY profitable.

Do you really think people from shiiithole Syria know how to properly take care of a house? These are SLUM tenants.

You have no idea how many rules, regulations and laws side with the tenant in any state. A landlord has no rights. Rats, mice and cockroaches in NJ are because of the TENANTS. NJ isn’t Florida!

These are people that are dirty. Unlike Florida we have four seasons. Living in NJ there is NO ONE in our development that has a rodent problem or an insect problem. The problem is third world people bringing their third world culture that is UNCLEAN with them and shiiiting up the house.

The problem is two fold. The landlords get paid market value for these apartments which is subsidized by the government. Hence, they should be held accountable for their shoddy work, or lack of work if that is the case and that is quite likely. The ‘immigrants’ who are on the dole, are being supported by groups granting them lawsuit monies, and political punch that the american veterans who return home don’t have for their problems that they earned ten fold. So, where is the common sense in all this? I’m not for the immigration, but I’m not for the landlords taking funds and not fulfilling their obligations. I’m not for the mistreatment of our veterans and others who may be shorted the services they pay for, and here we are… no sense, no sensibility.

There are hundreds of streets like this in every corner of the Muslim world, including Libya, Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, and Gaza – and they’re just getting started.

Before long, the Shiites in Iran and Lebanon, and the Palestinians in Gaza will ignite another regional war, but until then, the different Islamic sects will just have to content themselves with killing each other.

Ah, and of course but he did negotiate with them, the people, to settle their differences. Doesn’t make him good or bad, but a smart politician. He was at least willing to listen to their complaints.

This guy refused to address their concerns, not listen at all. The people (good or bad) felt that he did not give a damn (they were right) about them thereby causing the uprising and of course it escalated to what it is today. All because of his (Assad’s) EF U attitude toward them. His father kept the peace.

I’m not talking about all that he did, just why the disastrous happening occurred and it’s aftermath.

Look at South America’s Argentina, they gave refuge to some of Germanies worst war criminals, even the Church helped the upper crust Nazis escape.
