Italy’s voters choose populists, deliver stinging rebuke to Europe

68

At last, some good news out of Europe. CNN can barely contain its grief, but Italy’s voters chose freedom and sanity over the European establishment’s suicidal immigration policies. This is not the end of the pushback, either. Europe is not just going to roll over for the saboteurs, destroyers and invaders. There is much more of this to come.

“Italy’s voters choose populists, deliver stinging rebuke to Europe,” by Lauren Said-Moorhouse and Hilary Clarke, CNN, March 5, 2018:

(CNN)Italy was plunged into political uncertainty Monday after parliamentary elections delivered huge victories for populist, Euroskeptic parties but left no clear path forward for a new government.

Story continues below advertisement

No party or coalition received enough votes to rule alone, and Italy now faces a hung parliament, in what European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker described last month as the “worst case scenario” for Europe.

Projections indicate that around 50% of voters opted for populist or right-wing parties. As ballots continued to be tallied on Monday, the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) looked set to become the largest single party in parliament with 32% of the vote, although it will not have enough seats for an outright majority.

A right-wing coalition of parties, however, looks set to have the most seats of any bloc in parliament with about 37% of the vote. The big winner in that group was the anti-immigrant and xenophobic League — formerly the Northern League — which garnered more votes than the center-right Forza Italia, its potential coalition partner.

The result will be met with alarm by European leaders who feared that big wins for Italy’s anti-establishment parties would spell further trouble for a continent already struggling to cope with the destabilizing rise of populist and far-right movements in France, Germany and elsewhere.

  • The right-wing coalition cobbled together by Silvio Berlusconi won the most combined votes at roughly 37%, but the League came out on top of the bloc, winning about 17.5% of the votes to Forza Italia’s 14%. The swing toward the League, led by Matteo Salvini, looks set to give the party as many as 123 seats in the lower house, up from 22 seats, a six-fold increase.
  • Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party fared worse than expected, and the former Prime Minister appears to have failed in his attempt to position himself as the election’s kingmaker.
  • At about 32.5% of the vote, M5S outperformed final opinion polls. The party dominated in the south of Italy, receiving almost one in two votes in a region where youth unemployment is historically high.
  • Italy’s center-left coalition had a bad night, mustering about 23% of the vote. It will likely end up as the third-largest group in parliament behind the right-wing coalition and M5S.
  • Italy looks set to enter a period of political deadlock — facing weeks, if not months, of negotiations between groups with competing interests to form a government.

The League, Five Star, or both?

As the results continued to be counted, the League’s Salvini claimed victory during a press conference in Rome on Monday morning that will have set alarm bills ringing at European Union headquarters in Brussels.

“I have always said, I say now and I will always say that the euro is the wrong currency, and that it was a big mistake getting in it,” Salvini announced. “We have it very clear that the common currency is bound to end. And we want to come prepared to that moment.”

“We look towards the other European forces, that they call populist. I am and I will stay a proudly populist, because the populists listen to the people, unlike the ‘radical chic’ that despise the workers and don’t do their groceries, ” Salvini said.

Though the right-wing bloc did not won enough votes to form a majority government, Salvini claimed “an extraordinary victory.”

“This is the coalition that won, this is the coalition that will govern. The arrogance of [former Prime Minister Matteo] Renzi and his allies has been punished.”

But political scientist Paolo Chiocchetti said M5S would be central to the coming negotiations after it exceeded expectations.

“The big and only winners of the night are the Five Star Movement and the Lega (the League),” Paolo Chiocchetti, fellow of the Robert Schuman Institute of European Affairs at the University of Luxembourg, told CNN.

“Their rise was widely expected given the general anti-incumbency trend in Europe and the particularly harsh effect of the great recession and of austerity in Italy, whose current recovery is extremely feeble. However, they both exceeded the expectations.”

M5S has previously ruled out entering a coalition with any other party, although its leader, Luigi Di Maio, appeared to soften that stance in recent weeks.

Bad day for ruling party

Preliminary results indicate a disappointing showing for the outgoing center-left Democratic Party (PD) which is currently in government.

Although the PD is projected to have won the second most votes at about 19%, its center-left coalition, formed with the liberal More Europe party, could only muster a combined 23% and will likely end up as the third-largest group in parliament behind the right-wing coalition and M5S.

Democratic Party member and outgoing parliamentarian Andrea Marcucci said that the voters had spoken “clearly and incontrovertibly” and that “the populists had won and the (Democratic Party) had lost.”…

Lack of leader’s children is not an issue; their complete lack of reason is. Lack of children in population at large is bigger problem than lack of children in those said leaders. What! Do you think that a new aristocracy governs Europe with their lack of children forecasting their demise? This is not 18 or 19 century!

Lack of children … means an immature personality … lack of foresight … lack of vision … a limited sense of fiduciary duty … and inability to appreciate one’s responsibility to future and the past.

Not to mention in real-time, childless, middle-aged politicians strike me as over-grown children. They lack a quality one expects in an ‘adult.’ That in addition to be selfish, ignorant, petulant over-grown toddlers.

That does ring true… but having children didn’t seem to help Justin Trudeau grow up or be less self-centered.

Yes. Because it is only a correlation, not a causation.

The immature personality does not have children when contraception or abortion can prevent it. Unless those children are an accident. Children would interfere with their “lifestyle.”

Having children in Trudeau’s case is different. I’m sure it is nothing more than a means of fulfilling his narcissistic fantasy life. The kids are an object.

Back in the day I can remember celebs and pols adopting children – as if they were part of a collection of pets or zoo animals.

I’d bet – if we could get a third-party psych evaluation and a home study we would find that he scores very low on parenting metrics, and abnormally high on his emotional attachment to his ‘family’ fantasy.

Ed. Right. As if a few fecund dictators changes the fact that childless adults are frequently adult children. And in the case of Leftists the correlation is virtually 100%.

As for Ida Amin … Having 43 children is as bad as having none. Obviously he had no intention of doing any parenting.

Of course, in my research,I had been sidetracked by investigating whether it was being left handed that was the issue.
And although it’s sometimes hard to get accurate information, thinking about what you say, I note that Jesus is not recorded as having children , and he was certainly a lefty. with all that loving thy neighbour, feeding the poor, rubbish.
Where-as Mohammed went out and multilpied. and is still provided inspiration to millions today.

Jesus was a lefty? … What with withholding wages, false accusations, hating cops, hating your neighbor, dualism, special laws for the special, aborting children, genocide, eugenics, death camps, reeducation camps, racism, bigotry, hating your neighbor for the color of his skin… Wow. What Gospel are you reading? The one according to Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao? I missed all of those verses.

Fortunately Christ is still inspiring folks today.

Jesus . But how can he be inspiring people when he had no children, ad s obviously no parenting skills. Hating you’r neighbour? Odd It seems that American Doomsday Preppers are the ones planning on shooting any neighbours who come seeking help when the end of the world is nigh [ or whatever they are prepping for] Death camps, eugenics racism bigotry and wow “hating your neighbour fr the colour of his skin” That one sounds like US not too long ago. Unless i had it wrong and it was whites who had to ride in the back of the bus. But the rest seemed popular with fascists, who also invited Communists into those camps.
And I suspect that if Donald had been Jesus , he wouldn’t have handed out fishes and loaves, he’d have told them to get out and fish for themselves. And as for rendering unto Caesar> He might have in principle, but ti would be at a minimal tax rate and after Caesars share had been laundered through a tax haven, Presumably Israel n those days.

Hmm where are they aborting Children ? My understanding f women’s plumbing is that one can only abort a fetus. Something a woman’s body does natural in a large number of pregnancies. Perhaps you admire those Ultra right countries where rape victims are forced to go through the pregnancy and bear the child of their rapist?
But here for your interest in eugenics is a pic from your very own USA

Nice dodge Ed.

Where is your Scripture showing that Jesus supported any of this “Death camps, eugenics racism bigotry” Lefties spew?

Again. Lefties hate children. That’s why they want to abort them. Children also interfere with their childish lifestyle choices. When they do have children – they’re just objects or accidents.

And Lefties hate their neighbors. If they did not, they would not defame them with false accusations – after subjecting them to rape, murder, robbery, burglary, mugging, etc., just to list a few of the common law crimes.

Glad you brought up the past – when Lefties were all about hating blacks, Asians, Indians, etc.

“That one sounds like US not too long ago.” … You mean it sounds like the Demokkkratic Party. … And it still sounds like the Demokkkratic Party. … Unless you are insinuating that “white” skin color – whatever that is – is responsible for the ideology of the Left.

In fact, the Left hates everything unique, popular and decent about every country it poisons.

Leftists hate Germans, but they love Nazis. They hate Italians, but love
Brown Shirts. They hate Chinese, but they love Communists. (Which is
odd since they hate Cultural Appropriation, but they love it when Mass
Murderers adopt ideas stewed in Leftist think tanks in Paris.)

“But the rest seemed popular with fascists” … What? Fascism is Leftism.

“Perhaps you admire those Ultra right countries where rape victims are
forced to go through the pregnancy and bear the child of their rapist?”

Not sure where that would be. But I presume it means you admire those actual countries where women are forced to have abortions. I’ve never met a refugee from the countries I have never heard of, but I have met many women from Asian countries where abortion is mandatory.

Leftists are always worried about that rape victims will not be able to kill the rapist’s child. But they are never worried about preventing the rape in the first place. Leftists scream ‘racist’ or ‘xenophobe’ whenever anyone recommends sound – tested – proven – already used (and defeated by the Left) – methods for preventing and reducing the number of rape cases.

And then – after the crime has occurred – their only concern is about killing the offspring. Which happens to be what? A few hundred cases a year?

This is always offered as if legalizing abortion in cases of ‘rape’ somehow absolves the Left of the consequences of their policies on the crime of rape – and excuses the number of tax-payer funded abortions for convenience – and ignores the ensuing systemic problems. I mean seriously, the more I think about it the more irrelevant it is. I literally left my pro-bono practice with more cases where Leftist policies protected more child molesters and rapists and women-batterers than all of the cases of rape-offspring in the USA in a single year. And I’m supposed to take that seriously? Get real. I have seen the photos of literally hundreds of Americans whose photos should never have crossed my desk BUT FOR Leftists protecting criminals.

As for your Planned Parenthood meme – I take that as a Fail – Unless you are offering it to remind me that Lefties hate minorities, and that’s why they invented Eugenics. And that’s why they demand abortion.

You do know that Sanger was a Progressive – a Leftist – a co-founder of Planned Parenthood – a Saint in the Demokkkratic Party’s constellation of all-round great folks … You do know all that right?

“your very own USA” … Blaming me – and any other Pro-American for the crimes of the Demokkkratic Party is exactly like blaming any Anti-Nazi German for the crimes of his Nazi forebears. It’s not only calumny. It is not only fallacious. It is in fact a contradiction.

Leftists claim not to be bigots, but they go and hate people for race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, and a host of other trivial reasons whenever it suits them. And they disavow their fellow Leftists on the most spurious distinctions.

What you’re literally saying is: ‘You cannot blame Leftists because some people of a given category of national origin were Leftists.”

Modern American Leftists today need only stand up for the flag, and find a good tailor to outfit them with a snazzy set of duds – and they would fit right in with Nazis. The fact that they hate persons of different colors and national origins and so on changes nothing but the labels.

As for ‘loaves and fishes,’ ‘rendering unto Caesar,’ and ‘tax havens,’ … you can find a Bible online and read it. Biblegateway.com has many different editions and translations.

If you’re going to use Scripture to make a point or an argument, it might help you if you would familiarize yourself with the text. If you had read it, you would know that none of the examples you offered actually apply to the situations given. If Jesus was against low tax rates, against fishermen or bakers, or against taking advantage of legal loopholes, you might go to the Scripture and use it to make your point. If you had read the text, you would also know whether Jesus supported low taxes, fishermen, bakers, or taking advantage of legal loopholes.

Peace and love to you, Ed. Hope you’re warm wherever you are. Here we have been cold for weeks, and have only just returned to normal wintertime conditions. LOL.

Dan , Sir Dan . Sorry I always forget the irony hasn’t reached the shores of America. I was so gobsmacked by the idea that someone could imagine that having children was in any way related to leadership of a nation, that irony seemed the only escape to the real world. So I was only making the pint that the theory falls down when you consider Jesus who had no children.

The rest seems like trying to discuss plot lines of Game of Thrones when one has never watched or had any desire to watch it.
As for the bible , I can never get a consistent answers from Christians as to which parts are relevant/ current or superseded. . Especially when one mentions all the verses about keeping slaves, stoning adulterers and general smiting. And as in court, evidence , inconsistency invites disbelief.
If you would like an example of Christians forcing rape victims to bear the rapists child, look up Ireland,,e.g the “X case” [ name withheld] in 1992. But only one example and I can recall being in UK when a lady was prosecuted for smuggling contraceptives to Ireland.
But I would suggest that it would take a woman to understand women’s rights to decide about their own bodies.
But there may be some basis for believing Jesus was a capitalist , Just think, of the corporations such as Jesus Inc. built by the Swaggarts and Bakkers of the US.

Ed. Sorry if I missed the irony. “The use of words to convey the opposite meaning.” As for leadership: I would not judge actual leadership qualities whether good or bad on the attribute of children.

I am simply pointing out that Leftism is not pro-child, and it is therefore no surprise to find a curious correlation of childlessness among Left-wing leaders – which is consistent with my real-time experience with Left-leaning leadership. I’m certain the actual incidence rate is a soft correlation. Having children would not convey leadership qualities. OTOH, I’m equally certain – based on observation – that Left-leaning leaders prefer childlessness over parenting as a lifestyle. And if the original post that kicked this off is correct, the correlation is much higher than I would have anticipated.

“Game of Thrones” … I gave up broadcast TV in ’79. It’s a weak spot I know, but I personally have not missed it. Were it not for caring for my mother – who is addicted to murder mysteries – and the grocery store tabloid covers – I would oblivious to what those folks do.

Re Christian inconsistency … Fair enough. That’s on Christians.

As to particular topics in the Pentateuch: One might as well try explaining to ancient peasants why we tolerate the inhuman working conditions prevalent in many countries supplying us with our imports, why we tolerate prisons rather than lashings or executions, or why our ‘gods’ will smite us with Doomsday for disagreeing with a Leftist.

Ireland … okay. No worries. Soon they will be stoning women who don’t wear their hijabs, and all will be well in loopy land.

‘Jesus Inc.’ … Yes. Now that’s a good point, and I think it is a fair question. Not that I’m going to bother with it. A fair-minded questioner is open-minded enough to consider the evidence and ponder the implications when he gets around to it. But I will say: Used to be bothered by it in one way, and now it bugs me in a different way.

Though I do wonder – don’t you have quacks like Swaggart in your neck of the woods? That would surprise me. Such ‘money-changers’ are everywhere in the Christian world. And though many have detractors, not all of them do.

Again. Stay warm. Don’t go sliding off the roads. 😉

You got it right. Now we can hope that civility returns to those governments and they start again to recognize what is best for their people. Obviously, one of those issues facing Europe and the free world is the onslaught of Islam. Now is the time to act affirmatively to close the door to radical Islam and develop ways to allow those Islamic refugees a real opportunity to assimilate and become productive citizens and not the creators of “no-go” zones. Let us hope that can be done as deportation is not now in the cards.

This is a massive win for the anti-Islamic and anti-Leftist movement. Italy has decided that it won’t go quietly into that Islamic night and if they can stop that slide, then the rest of us can also. I would like the same to happen in other European countries like Netherlands, UK, France, Sweden, etc and here in Canada as well.

Salvini (who’s like Italy’s Geert Wilders) promised to deport 500,000 muslim migrants and close mosques and deal with Islam, I really look forward to seeing that happening, since no other PM has been able to do that yet. Hungary/Poland were very smart-they saw how EU was destroying Europe with Islamic immigration and flatly refused to comply.

If western europe did the same they wouldn’t be in this mess and girls wouldn’t have been raped/killed by muslim invaders. The future is looking great for our side-I think all the work that the anti-Islamic movement has done is finally paying off. We’re not done by a longshot but things are finally going in the right direction.
