Downtown San Francisco Site of Trash, Feces and Drug Needles

114

An investigative unit of NBC News took to the streets of 153 blocks of downtown San Francisco to scope the scene, report the truths — and startling enough, uncovered the likes of trash, feces and drug needles strewn everywhere.

Needles in the streets — thanks, San Francisco Dems, for the leadership.

The startling part is the left-leaning media outlet actually reported the facts. Why? Because San Francisco is a liberal’s dream come true. It’s run almost entirely by Democrats.

And this is what Democratic policies bring — feces in the streets, drug needles along the sidewalks.

Story continues below advertisement

It’s not exactly a secret San Francisco’s leftist visions and politics have wrought nothing but havoc. Here’s a somber assessment of the situation, from 2016:

And here’s a more somber assessment, from 2016:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QATHFJApFo

Want a bit of humor with your street feces? OK: Here’s one, made just recently:

But NBC has the modern day story — and it’s neither pretty, nor funny:

The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit surveyed 153 blocks of downtown San Francisco in search of trash, needles, and feces. The investigation revealed trash littered across every block. The survey also found 41 blocks dotted with needles and 96 blocks sullied with piles of feces.

How dirty is San Francisco? An NBC Bay Area Investigation reveals a dangerous mix of drug needles, garbage, and feces throughout downtown San Francisco. The Investigative Unit surveyed 153 blocks of the city – the more than 20-mile stretch includes popular tourist spots like Union Square and major hotel chains. The area – bordered by Van Ness Avenue, Market Street, Post Street and Grant Avenue – is also home to City Hall, schools, playgrounds, and a police station.

As the Investigative Unit photographed nearly a dozen hypodermic needles scattered across one block, a group of preschool students happened to walk by on their way to an afternoon field trip to citiy hall.

“We see poop, we see pee, we see needles, and we see trash,” said teacher Adelita Orellana. “Sometimes they ask what is it, and that’s a conversation that’s a little difficult to have with a 2-year old, but we just let them know that those things are full of germs, that they are dangerous, and they should never be touched.”

In light of the dangerous conditions, part of Orellana’s responsibilities now include teaching young children how to avoid the contamination.

“The floor is dirty,” said A’Nylah Reed, a 3-year-old student at the preschool, who irately explained having to navigate dirty conditions on her walks to school.

“There is poop in there,” she exclaimed. “That makes me angry.”

Kim Davenport, A’nyla’s mother, often walks her daughter to the Compass preschool on Leavenworth Street in San Francisco. She said she often has to pull her daughter out of the way in order to keep her from stepping on needles and human waste. “I just had to do that this morning!”

The Investigate Unit spent three days assessing conditions on the streets of downtown San Francisco and discovered trash on each of the 153 blocks surveyed. While some streets were littered with items as small as a candy wrapper, the vast majority of trash found included large heaps of garbage, food, and discarded junk. The investigation also found 100 drug needles and more than 300 piles of feces throughout downtown.
“If you do get stuck with these disposed needles you can get HIV, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, and a variety of other viral diseases,” said Dr. Lee Riley, an infectious disease expert at University of California, Berkeley. He warned that once fecal matter dries, it can become airborne, releasing potentially dangerous viruses, such as the rotavirus. “If you happen to inhale that, it can also go into your intestine,” he said. The results can prove fatal, especially in children.

Riley has researched conditions across the poorest slums of the world. His book titled, “Slum Health,” examines health problems that are created by extreme poverty.

Based on the findings of the Investigative Unit survey, Riley believes parts of the city may be even dirtier than slums in some developing countries.

“The contamination is … much greater than communities in Brazil or Kenya or India,” he said. He notes that in those countries, slum dwellings are often long-term homes for families and so there is an attempt to make the surroundings more livable. Homeless communities in San Francisco, however, are often kicked out from one part of town and forced to relocate to another. The result is extreme contamination, according to Riley.

“Unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable,” said Supervisor Hillary Ronen. “We’re losing tourists. We’re losing conventions in San Francisco. All of this is happening because we aren’t addressing the root cause, which is we need more temporary beds for street homelessness.”

Ronen believes San Francisco has been too focused on permanent housing for the homeless and that the city has neglected to provide enough temporary shelter, which can provide the homeless a respite from the streets. The city currently has about 2,000 temporary beds. Ronen, however, believes an additional 1,000 are needed, at a cost of about $25 million.

“We need to find a source of revenue,” said Ronen. “Whether that’s putting something on the ballot to raise business taxes or taking a look at our general fund and re-allocating money towards that purpose and taking it away from something else in the city.”
Until the problem is fixed, Mohammed Nuru, the Director of the Public Works Department, is charged with the towering task of cleaning the streets, over and over again. “Yes, we can clean, he said, “and then go back a few hours later, and it looks as if it was never cleaned. So is that how you want to spend your money?”

The 2016-2017 budget for San Francisco Public Works includes $60.1 million for “Street Environmental Services.” The budget has nearly doubled over the past five years. Originally, that money, was intended to clean streets, not sidewalks. According to city ordinances, sidewalks are the responsibility of property owners. However, due to the severity of the contamination in San Francisco, Public Works has inherited the problem of washing sidewalks. Nuru estimates that half of his street cleaning budget – about $30 million – goes towards cleaning up feces and needles from homeless encampments and sidewalks.
A single pile of human waste, said Nuru, takes at least 30 minutes for one of his staffers to clean. “The steamer has to come. He has to park the steamer. He’s got to come out with his steamer, disinfect, steam clean, roll up and go.”

Asked if he’d be willing to give up part of his budget and allocate it to more directly addressing the homeless problem – which would likely alleviate his cleaning problem – Nuru said, “The Board of Supervisors, the mayor – those are decisions that they need to make.” He added, “I want to continue cleaning and I want to be able to continue to provide services. The Public Works Department provides services seven days a week, 24 hours a day.”

Ronen acknowledges that finding the money to provide 1,000 additional beds for the homeless may very well take years. The city is planning on opening three new Navigation Centers for homeless people by the summer, but two centers will also be closing.

“We’re not going to make a huge dent in this problem unless we deal with some underlying major social problems and issues,” she said. “There’s a human tragedy happening in San Francisco.”

The left are the sneaky devlish ones. The reason NBC broadcast this is to push for tax increases to counter President Trumps tax decreases, that’s how they roll.
Rest assured the tax increases will come but little will be done to solve San Francisco’s health crisis.

Tom,
I must clarify this for you. We have PAID FOR THIS for approximately 35 years now.
All kinds of old fees raised, new fees added, new hotel taxes, riding the cable car
cost $5 p.p. going two blocks seven years ago (must be higher now). Business
shaken down for everything you can think of. Then there’s the property taxes………..
They are very creative in S.F. when it comes to fees, however I do not know
where it is going, the revenue that is.

When Newsom was mayor of San Francisco, Michael Savage bestowed upon him the name “Any Twosome” Newsom because of his support for gay marriage. Now the LGBT supremacist “leaders” control that city (and the entire state) by proxy. That children are now mandated to be totally brainwashed and indoctrinated into that lifestyle, to the point where they are even converted to it (and therefore plunged headfirst into a life of depravity, debauchery, degeneracy, perversion and degradation), with no “opt-outs” whatsoever, shows also how (very) little (if at all) children are valued in today’s society, and how they’re being readily sacrificed and primed for mutilation / permanent disfigurement (not to mention irrevocable alteration of body chemistry – essentially reduced to the level of lab rats / guinea pigs in radical social experimentation) in the same way girls are being sacrificed to Islamists in Europe.

And Newsom ain’t the governor – “Moonbeam” Brown is. But Brown should also be with them in a cell.

The problem usually begins when streets in a left-leaning city go unrepaired. The problem spreads from there.

In 1999, Phoenix steets were in good condition. That has changed. Now, it is going the same way as SF, thanks to Demoncratic mayor Greg Stanton and his rubber-stamp cohorts.

Yet another reason to support the New California movement. The Petri dish that is San Francisco and most other leftist enclaves are predominately along the coast. This state is beautiful and has plenty of natural resources, separating from the coastal areas would allow us normal folks to put those to good use. Meanwhile there are roads around SF, the bride of my youth and I have been using them for decades now because this isn’t a new issue…

In the mid seventies, after Quantico, I spent a brief time at Camp Pendleton. It was around a six or seven hour drive, gorgeous scenery, on El Camino Real to San Francisco. I very much enjoyed Fisherman’s Wharf and drives through the hills … It was marvelous. In 1999, my wife and I flew from Saipan to San Francisco, as she had never been there. In broad daylight, people without shirts (rather cold when we were there) would be spitting at pedestrians, jumping in front of vehicles … You got harassed, walking outside of hotels … panhandlers everywhere. I had been telling her stories about how much fun it was, in San Francisco. Man, did I get an earful. I had to promise her that it wasn’t like that, when I had been there before. I had planned that trip, as on old Gunnery Sergeant, Richard Montenegro, was living in Pacifica .. and I had really been looking forward to this visit. NEVER AGAIN! It seems as if it has gotten worse, since then …. which I didn’t think was possible.

Yep. It’s all that and more. I had a run-in a couple of years ago, with a MILITANT bicyclist there who was clearly breaking the law. They really do believe they own the road and HATE cars. Interesting how they become so indignant about cars when they pay “0” road taxes and those of us who drive cars, pay through the nose in those fees. I suppose it’s to go for all those high salaries in CA government.

And the ones who ride in packs with the ‘professional gear’ on, are the WORST. They ride on city streets, in tandem, and you (the car) are in THEIR roadway. Others will run red lights, ride in the opposite direction of traffic. No matter. They can do whatever they want. So they think.

Highland Road, is a street that I often take. There is stoplight at one corner, that I often take a right on … as it’s the quickest route to three of my houses in South Euclid. The number of times, while making a right turn on red … I have almost clipped some bicyclist, as they just ride up beside vehicles that are stopped, approximates ten times. They’re riding on the right side of stopped vehicles and simply run the light, to go straight. Now, I always check to see if some rider is coming …. Most of ’em couldn’t punch their way out of a wet paper bag … but they surely can scream obscenities and raise a middle finger. I confronted one of them once, attempting to explain the situation and how they were placing their lives in jeopardy, not to mention that they are breaking the law. I thought the little fart was going to urinate all over itself.

PFC Marvin was in the Fourth Marine Division, the last to hit the island, right before the Army. Some believe that his being shot, in the buttocks, was US Army .. as this occurred right around the time that General Holland Smith ordered the Army back on board ships .. with the line, “Get those candy-assed toy soldiers off of this island … They’re killing my Marines.” There was some speculation that his wound was .30 cal … Makes for good cocktail talk, whether true or not. Interesting thing, he was awarded the Purple Heart. My father was all scarred up from three separate Japanese bayonets and was shot in his left forearm. We used to ask him why he didn’t have a Purple Heart. He would reply, “Marines don’t get Purple Hearts .. we leave that medal to the Army sissies and Navy cooks that sit on a potato peeler.”

Typical liberal response to this type of problem. ‘We need much, much more money.’
“Ronen, however, believes an additional 1,000 are needed, at a cost of about $25 million.” Gee, $25,000 per bed? No wonder SF is the most expensive city in the U.S. I’m sure the homeless have demanded those types of accommodations and since the city isn’t budging, their sh*tting all over the streets in protest. Just the SF thing to do.
And the Director of Public Works said this: “Yes, we can clean, he said, “and then go back a few hours later, and it
looks as if it was never cleaned. So is that how you want to spend your
money?” ‘Um no, Nuru, if your crews can’t clean it fast enough, that means you leave your luxury city tower and take a steam cleaner yourself and start clearing the fecal matter from the streets. Start giving the taxpayers something for that undeserved six-figure salary your getting.’ Perhaps Nuru should have a day’s worth of Grade A homeless dung dumped on his front door step. I left San Francisco for just this reason. In addition to everything mentioned here, people who are obviously mentally ill, walk the streets, arms out, toothless and moaning. They try to grab you, as though they want help. Some try to enter restaurants and are thrown to the sidewalk by owners and managers. There are services that high pressure wash the entryways to apartment and office building between 4:30 AM and dawn to clear out the urine and feces. I wouldn’t go back to San Francisco for any reason. The conditions throughout downtown are disgusting and intolerable.

Some call it possessed, like Satan their father (think Demoncrap), others say they are deluded fatherless MORONS (think RINOS), but either way they actually belong in an insane asylum.

Let them run their world there where they can do no one any harm. Look, Yahuah will do that to Satan in a few short years. Put him in a black hole and lock him up. Where he can only TORMENT HIMSELF!!

You don’t have to look very far to find one of those “sh*thole” locales to which President Trump supposedly referred, do you? There are other examples of commiecrat urban blight such as Chicago and Detroit, the latter having already declared bankruptcy. Illinois is so broke that lottery winners receive a voucher instead of their winnings because the money is already spent even though the cost of the tickets supposedly composes the jackpot. Real financial wizardry.

The last Democrat I voted for was a decent man. Now, it seems every Democrat is a devout Marxist, and bent only on destroying America.

Sadly, I am a registered Democrat, going back to when I first was old enough to vote. But I make it a point of NEVER voting for Democrats in general elections, for that very reason (their being foaming-at-the-mouth Marxist). Like with Reagan (and, later, Joe Lieberman), the Democrat Party left me.

In my career I witnessed third world countries who’s streets resembled this. Yes “Shitholes”. Disease is ramp-id in those places as well as here in the U.S. because of the Utopian dream. It is a shame as SF was such a beautiful city back in its day. You will only see it in movies now. The people in power of course have “scales” over their eyes and insulate themselves from what is happening around them. The gay crowd will have an ugly awakening when the muslims turn on them and slaughter them in droves in that city. Somehow I think the conservatives will get the blame. We are going so far down this road I believe it is Biblical. We are not going to stop it maybe slow it down but not stop it.

Maybe that’s why the Left wants more LGBT’s among the general population – to set them up for slaughter at the hands of Muslims. . . .

San Francisco has been a sh** hole for years. And this is area is home to California’s prominent politicians!

Orange County used to “fix” these election problems in California. But since the demographics of that area has changed, the nut-jobs of the Bay area run the state. For you doubters about the “nut-jobs”, just listen to Pelosi!

As the article predictably concludes, “we have to do more”. Well, we’ve been “doing more” for decades and the problem has gotten worse and worse. Very often when we try to solve problems we end up making them worse. This is because reality doesn’t care about the subjective morality we impose upon it. Some problems have paradoxical solutions and some problems have no solutions (at least the kind that are acceptable to us).

1,000 beds cost $25,000,000. That’s $25,000/bed. Yeah! If you’re among those who think income redistribution, i.e., taking from the productive in the economy and giving to the useless, is the solution to the free market, Capitalist systems “ills” ….makes perfect sense. Pardon those of us without the intellectual acuity of the brainless bureaucrats who promote and implement these magnificently nuanced “solutions,” if we’re left scratching our heads.

The state’s psychiatric hospitals used to have patients doing what work the could do , including growing some of their own food .
Give the bums a paper sleeping bag , some C rations and a cot down on the border wherever illegal crossing are happening . After a few months things will be so foul that illegals will not dare to cross into America .
The state needs another ice age to properly deal with matters , nothing else to be done .

San Francisco isn’t dealing with this as it should be dealt with. Transport these people somewhere. California is a big state and there must be somewhere they could build barracks
for these people. After all soldiers live in barracks.
They should be forced to take care of themselves, (yes I know, it is perhaps impossible). In addition they can not come back to San Francisco, absolutely NOT. Most
of the “homeless” drug addicts, mentally ill are from somewhere else, aprox. 90%.
The article is very accurate in it’s description.
I live outside of San Francisco. Used to go in there with friends or my spouse, for shopping
and dining. We stopped that.
Furthermore I recommend anyone planning to visit S.F. NOT to come here. It is just too
disgusting and risky as far as diseases and crime. There was over 35.000 car break-ins
in the City in 2017. Everything gets stolen. Guns, urns with ashes some trusting individual
lost, more than once. A valuable violin was stolen. So was the costumes left by a performer…………….and lots of other belongings left by unsuspecting visitors and residents.
I have lived in this area since early eighties and it has been bad and now getting worse.
The panhandling is very intrusive and demanding with an attitude that you owe them.
If you don’t give they become angry and curse as you are walking away……………fast!

I have had bums try to mug me twice , both times within three blocks of the ferry Terminal . Second time was witnessed by two women who worked in the financial district , was asked why I hurt them (bums) so badly. They called cops , cops never showed .
Had a girlfriend who lived on Minna st in ’70 , she loved the town .

Stupid progressives . Whining about problems that have been there since the sixties , and every ‘solution’ has made matters worse .
Coddling bums and the destruction of residential mental health treatment began at the same time , augmenting the number of bums who became permanent residents instead of working the circuit of missions on the west coast . one of California politicians worst acts was putting the insane out into the world , they and the ACLU wanted the loonies out, and out they went . All of that made for an increase in crime and beggars .
What did the city do ? Legitimised all the problems , maybe they were priming themselves for the inflush of of illegals and islamites .

Oakland has been a hellhole for a long, long time. My mom was nearly raped near Lake Merrit(?) 50 years ago. Twenty years ago, not 50 yards away from that location, I was visiting a friend and we ordered pizza that never showed up. The pizza deliveryman had been robbed right in front of his apartment bldng. at gunpoint.

It all starts with jerry brown and the legislature. They are worthless, valueless dems who spend taxpayer’s money on illegals, ( free EVERYTHING), then raise taxes over and over when the money runs out. Calpers is close to 500 BILLION in the red. The entire state i going the way of sf, nice job dems.! Of course, the stupid voters keep putting them back in, 8 out of ten registered voters vote a straight democrat ticket. Is that due to gross STUPIDITY? Sidesbar, read The Bell Curve which explains the population and their lack of intelligence across the state.
