GHOUL STUFF — A Halloweensie Story

I’m posting next Monday’s post early, because today’s the first day of Susanna Hill’s wonderful Halloweensie Writing Contest and I couldn’t wait to join in the fun!

The rules, in brief, are (quoting from Susanna’s blog): Write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (children here defined as 12 and under) (title not included in the 100 words), using the words candy corn, monster, and shadow. (Candy corn will be counted as 1 word.)  Your story can be scary, funny, or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over!)  Get it?  Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people! You may use the words in any form – e.g. monsters, monstrous, shadowy, shadowed, whathaveyou.

At the end of this post, I’ll give you the link to Susanna’s post where you can find all the stories (keep checking that link — stories can be posted until 11:59 p.m. EDT on October 31st. If you want to participate, there’s time!

Now, my story. 97 words, since Susanna says “candy corn” can be counted as one. I counted my hyphenated words as 3.

GHOUL STUFF

Halloween! Scare-and-screaming time!

My brother howled. “Monsters don’t DO Halloween! Monsters hide under beds. Monsters lurk in closets. Halloween is GHOUL STUFF!”

I didn’t care. This pink monster was going Halloweening.

Nobody was scared. Nobody screamed. Ghouls everywhere! No monsters. A ghoul shrieked. I shivered.

Oh no! A baby ghoul crying! Big ghouls taunted, “You couldn’t scare a kitten!”

I ran to her. “We’re scary! Just watch!”

We tiptoed to a house. Something leapt from the shadows. We screamed!

The something smiled. “How sweet you look! Have some candy corn.”

YUM! Candy corn’s ghoul AND monster stuff!

G is for Ghouls (and Ghosts and Goblins). It’s for Halloween Goodies (like candy corn, although I’d rather have little chocolate bars). It’s also for Get over to Susanna’s blog to read all the entries! Here’s the link!

  1. Nice job in getting an entire story and dialogue in the Halloweensie, Beth. Love me a pink monster.

  2. Jilanne Hoffmann

Candy corn makes it all better…for some monsters and ghouls. Just leave some Mounds bars for me, and I’ll be happy. That’s one plucky pink monster you’ve got there. I really like her spunk! Good luck in the contest!

  3. Yes, candy corn belongs to everyone. Although, like you, I love me some chocolate stuff more. Love this idea of what’s Ghoul stuff verses Monster stuff. Even with monsters and ghouls we can find a commonality that exists. What a fun read.

  4. Locking my doors and turning out the lights tonight. Candy corn will be on the porch….too scary little Pink but glad it worked out for you.
    cute story 🙂
    best of luck
