Donald Trump Threatens to Cancel Some Health Care Benefits for Lawmakers

44

President Donald Trump, in the wake of the Senate’s Republican-dominated failure to pass Obamacare repeal, threatened to cut some cushy healthy benefits for legislators and push them on to the same Obamacare-type plans the rest of America has to use.

Hallelujah. Why should legislators have a special class of health care?

The fact is: If you want to see Obamacare repealed in quick-time, the way to go about it is to make lawmakers suffer the same Obamacare disasters as the rest of Americans.

Story continues below advertisement

From the Wall Street Journal:

President Donald Trump made one of his most explicit threats to cut off payments to insurance companies to force senators and lobbyists back to the bargaining table for a GOP health-care bill, and saying, for the first time, that he was also willing to cancel some of lawmakers’ health-care benefits.

This is bold.

And trust that lawmakers are trembling.

As the Hill notes:

“After seven years of ‘talking’ Repeal & Replace, the people of our great country are still being forced to live with imploding ObamaCare!” the president wrote in a tweet.

“If a new HealthCare Bill is not approved quickly, BAILOUTS for Insurance Companies and BAILOUTS for Members of Congress will end very soon!” he added.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) fired back Saturday, saying Trump should “stop playing politics with people’s lives and health care, start leading, and finally begin acting presidential.”

“If the president refuses to make the cost sharing reduction payments, every expert agrees that premiums will go up and health care will be more expensive for millions of Americans,” Schumer said in a statement.

Trump has previously threatened to withhold the payments, known as Cost Sharing Reduction (CSR) payments, which lower the amount individuals have to pay for deductibles, copayments and insurance.

The White House announced earlier this month that key ObamaCare subsidies to insurers would be paid this month, however the administration did not make a commitment beyond July.

Trump’s comments come after Senate Republican efforts to repeal and replace ObamaCare failed in the early hours of Friday morning after three Republicans and all 48 Democrats rejected pared-down repeal legislation, known as a “skinny” bill.

The issue is of critical importance to Republicans in all three branches of government because the party campaigned for seven years to repeal former President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law.

Congress holds the purse strings so I’m wondering if he can Constitutionally do it.

Congress held the purse strings during eight years of Obama, and never used this weapon of responsibility against him.

At the very least: it will exposed these charlatans in Congress for what blatant hypocrites they are, so they can be voted out in 2018.

Presuming the money is already budgeted for such…Congress dare Donald Trump to do so. That would be an impeachable offense (violating Public Law 93-344, the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974) if he makes good on his threat. The POTUS cannot make law or deviate from duly passed law.

The usual RINO suspects voted against the repeal of Obamacare: Lindsey Graham, Susan Collins, Big Bertha Murkowski, and the ring leader water-board Johnny MexCain, the insane tool from Arizona.

It’s a wonder that someone at a townhall meeting in Arizona doesn’t give McCain a good dressing down that he so richly deserves for shafting the citizens of Arizona repeatedly.

The facts show that McCain was the black sheep/low achiever of a family with a proud military tradition.
He was a “frat boy in uniform” and a close reading of the “notable” incidents he was involved in as a Navy Bomber Pilot will demonstrate this.

Bingo. McCain was the gang of 8 leader trying to ram mass amnesty for illegals down our throats. Him and his boyfriend, Lindsey, want to get us in a war with Russia now.

Absolutely, one health care system for everyone, no special treatment for elected politicians who are allowed to set their own wages, tax rate, and benefit plan. A little consistency across society when it comes to dealing with public programs is in order. Well done President Trump.

Free market health system. You get the health care you pay for. A frugal consumer is a better watch dog than a fat bureaucrat any day. Cut off the government subsidies and the insurance companies can offer products the American people can afford or go out of business. Capitalism is a harsh system, but it is the only honest system.

Capitalism may be harsh, but it is, over the long haul, the only durable ~and~ humane system for dealing with issues of this sort.
Every other system that has ever been tried, and socialism/marxism has been tried over 200 times since it was first espoused, has failed. In every single society where it has been tried [a more accurate description is imposed] it has been a failure, with the process of failure bringing hardship, suffering, and death to the majority of those upon which the system has been imposed.

I don’t believe it’s a threat at all. It remains a viable solution to a problem and it also allows all one hundred Senators to focus on solving this issue in the here and now. I think it’s an excellent way to officially target a problem and provide the means of targeting and implementing a solution for both Republicans and Democrats not to mention their own constituents. Besides, Obama negated the mandate/ruling that ensured our Congressional representatives must have a personal interest by being directly influenced and affected by their own legislation. They cannot be above it all or be unaffected by it; This was observed and acknowledged by the Gingrich revolution in the 1990s. Obama did all of this without any congressional approval or disapproval. By providing Congress with this special dispensation when it came to Obamacare, congressional representatives and their own medical treatment, it was a slap in America’s face. Obama had no authority to do so …another ‘executive’ order which Donald Trump has put back in place and not a problem at all. Anyone who says it is, lies…

Mr. President,
Please cancel EVERY perc congress gets that you can. We should not have a ruling class that is not subject to the same laws and regulations that the American people are. These people inflicted Obamacare on us, they should bear the same burden.

Excellent Idea! The Senate needs to feel the pain of those who suffered for seven years under the “Affordable” Care Act. What is good for “we the people” is good for the Senate.

Cry-baby Chuckie-Cheese Schumer, try to practice what your lying pie hole spews out. You and the rest of the dead beat free-loaders in Congress “stop playing politics with people’s lives and health care,” take lessons from the only leader in DC, and finally, start being, not acting (because you are lousy at it) like a representative of the people. You work for us!! You are also no better than us, so suck up the same health care issues, as well as many other issues, that we all have to endure.

Shumer is out of touch of course and the only reason he fires back is he’s afraid he’d be put down to the insurance the rest of the country has to put up with. Payments to insurance companies ?? Why do they need even more money? They’re already announcing record breaking profits year over year and were seriously spending tax dollars on them? WTH is wrong with this country! Insurance insurance insurance. Get the damn government out of the insurance please before all tax dollars and income has to go to the insurance rats

Congress was granted its exemption from the ACA by dint of Obamas “pen and phone”. This exemption can be rescinded by the same means.

Make Congress critters buy their own insurance. Subject them to the laws they enact for the rest of us. Further, make them buy their policies in their home districts. Some may be limited to one insurer. Some may not be able buy insurance at all. Those that are able to get coverage will see, firsthand, the massive increases that their constituents face

Issue an Executive Order requiring that all members of the US Congress and their families and staffs must go to the V.A. Hospital/Clinic in their home district for their medical care.
This would address two problems with one order.
Give the order a sunset provision/condition, stating that it will remain in force until all statutes, rules, regulations, and policies issued pursuant to “The Affordable Care Act” are repealed, rescinded, and made void.

Hmmm, I wonder what the House Representatives and Senators would do if they had to use the same health care that the general American public uses. Imagine them paying insurance premiums and imagine them paying for prescriptions. I am be willing to bet that they would fix our broken health care systems immediately if not sooner!!

NO one has ever explained to me WHY is government involved in health care/insurance anyway. The dumos keep hollerin 30 million Americans will lose their health care if obummer is repealed. Everyone is worried about the Health Insurance companies losing their subsidies. If you repeal and tell the Health Care Industry YOU are on your own and the said “30 million” Americans lose their health insurance. A giant sucking sound will be heard as the Industry tries to sell 30 PLUS million Americans health insurance coverage. They either lower their costs or go out of business to the competition. When you watch TV every night how many insurance companies are trying to sell you their insurance?? Mine cheaper, mine is better, I have this I have that. Oh by the way I can take that car insurance and move to bombay Montana and guess what I get to take it with me along with my life insurance. Hmmmmm???
