Lawyers for NYC Muslim Terrorist Bomber Argue: He’s Not a Terrorist

22

Lawyers for Ahmad Khan Rahimi, who’s been accused of plotting bomb attacks in New Jersey and New York, are taking the somewhat odd defense strategy of arguing — he’s not a terrorist.

Defense attorneys filed papers in federal court in Manhattan that accuses prosecutors of taking an inflammatory tack with jurors to paint their client as a terrorist. What exactly are prosecutors planning to do?

To show the evidence, it seems — that Rahimi, an Afghanistan-born U.S. citizen, was trying to flee less than 48 hours after the bombings in Mahattan.

Story continues below advertisement
The bombings, on September 17, 2016, left 31 people wounded, but no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were reported. In the morning, a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey. Later that day, a homemade pressure cooker bomb went off in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City.

The bombings in September of 2016 left 31 with injuries. Nobody was killed, however.

The Associated Press has more (h/t Jihad Watch):

The lawyers said in papers filed in Manhattan federal court Thursday that prosecutors plan to show jurors inflammatory evidence against Ahmad Khan Rahimi at his October trial, including letting them hear that he owned a gun, shot at police and has been charged in New Jersey with attempted murder.

Prosecutors responded in court papers, saying “the defendant’s murderous efforts to flee, less than 48 hours after the bombings in Manhattan, are probative of his consciousness of guilt.”

Defense lawyers noted Rahimi has not been charged with a federal crime of terrorism.

Rahimi, an Afghanistan-born U.S. citizen, has pleaded not guilty to charges alleging he detonated a pipe bomb near a Seaside Park, New Jersey, charity run and planted two pressure cooker bombs in Manhattan last September. A bomb in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood went off, injuring 30 people.

Federal prosecutors said evidence defense lawyers want excluded from trial is important.

“The defendant’s interest in jihad, terrorist organizations, terrorist attacks, and other terrorists, is probative of his motive, intent, and plan to commit the charged crimes,” prosecutors said.

The defense said it is particularly bothered by government plans to show jurors emails seized from Rahimi’s electronic accounts that attach video links showing people with headscarves, an assault rifle and a rocket-launcher, and other links to a criminal complaint and “The Book of Jihad.”

“The government’s insistence on introducing these three plainly inadmissible emails can only be explained by the government’s desire to cherry-pick the most inflammatory evidence to force-fit the ‘radicalization’ theory it has drummed up to make its case more ‘compelling, dramatic, and seductive,'” the lawyers wrote.

The lawyers also asked a trial judge to reject government plans to show jurors a blood-stained notebook with a bullet hole in it that prosecutors contend resulted from Rahimi’s shootout with police when he was arrested two days after the bombing.

“The only plausible reason the government is trying to get this ‘evidence’ before jurors is to inflame them with evidence that Mr. Rahimi has a ‘bad character’ or is prone to violence,” they said.

Prosecutors say the document shows he started studying terrorist propaganda in 2012 and within a couple of years was learning to create the kind of bombs he used last September.

Muslims are consummate politicians: lie, lie, and lie … tell a lie over and over and over again, until people either believe it, or somewhat doubt their own convictions. People are very, very easily swayed in general.

Just put him in prison for 30 or 40 years, and by then, we should have this resolved one way or the other re Islam.

Yes Michael! And we who make comments sound like broken records. One day the lid(s) may be blown off. It seems Western Civilization has been neutered. Guess we should be thankful for the good years we’ve had.

We can hope, Keith … Much has been neutered. A lot rides on the next 5 to 10 years. Europe should pretty much be toast by then, and Muslims will be going full force here. Yes, let us be thankful for the good years we’ve had. I remain hopeful. But the forces at play to destroy freedom are pretty powerful.

I do like the fact that a lot of us are armed, and when and if the time comes, we’ll use what we have. But the stuff ‘our government’ has at its disposal is … well, they have an advantage! Let us hope that, unlike Europe, we don’t go quietly into the night. I don’t think we will.

These lawyers should be carefully investigated for potential ties with extremists themselves.

He’s not a ‘terrorist’ to them. Do they even have a word for that in Islam? No, they don’t. He’s a ‘jihadi’ fighting against the kufr. End of.
God, but I’m so sick of these people.

Well the two things are interchangeable muslim!/terrorist.
Perhaps his lawyers just do not understand that.
It’s amazing how many misunderstandings there are between this beautiful peaceful religion of islam and the o so humble muslims and the rest of the civiized world.
No group of people in the history of manikind has ever been treated so unfairly, and judged so harshly .
We should feel shame let’s just give this guy a huge monetary settlement for this false accusation! ?

Of course defence Lawyers never ‘cherry pick’ evidence! How many times have obviously guilty criminals been freed on some technicality overlooked by the police?

Wait a friggin’ minute. This guy is only able to stand trial for the bombing incident because he survived a shootout with the cops on his subsequent arrest. Doesn’t that account for anything?

All they need to do now is to have the guy’s poor old gray-haired mother take the stand in his behalf and tell the court what a good boy he’s always been. I mean, let’s cut the guy some slack, he was probably having a bad day, okay? I mean, who doesn’t throw a bomb or two when they’re feeling a little under appreciated?

How daft! The Qu’ran commands its followers to strike terror in the hearts of the infidels. I know because I read their so-called holy book. What an ungodly pile of camel dung it is!
