Life’s a stage, babe. Let’s go sailing.

psst: A few new little pieces just went live in the Atelier

My practice is strong lately. I’m drawing and painting and writing everyday. I’m painting family tree commissions and working on secret projects. Getting older is hard but getting better is making up for it. It’s good to be settled in my massive studio space, and every day embody a bit more of what it means to be a working artist. With my sketching and scribbling I’m speaking a visual language I first wrote many years ago, and I find I’m in dialogue with my former self, my undiscovered self and my future self. It’s like trying to look into a black hole, around a curve, over a horizon - when you’ve stretched to your limits you catch a glimpse of what you might become and what you have been. Even when I try to recreate something I’ve made before, it comes out different because I am informed by my life experiences. The new artifact is colored with all those things I cannot un-know.

To those of you who are also creators, I want to remind you to keep practicing, keep writing your own story, and keep finding new ways to tell it. Keep stretching over the horizon. The only way to know if you are an artist is to try to be one every day. This is true for anyone: Some days we are artists. Some days we are not. Even still, we have the chance, right? We have the chance to try. Life is a stage indeed. Merci.
