I really need to use more solid metal chains, but even the plated ones are great. They are very pretty no matter what style you create. I would love however to see how a patina-ed necklace would turn out. Great review and wonderful materials.

I have been wearing chain necklaces all through winter and love them but the polish tends to fade away after some time. So these chains look like a good alternate
I like using brass that I patinate with liver of sulphur - my customers see what they are getting and are not disappointed when the metal oxidizes. I also find that patinated brass works well with the colors of polymer that I use. These chains are lovely! I'm looking forward to your tutorial on shortening very long chains.
I loved reading this article. I love long necklaces. Never knew about House of Gems. Going to visit. The first pic design is wonderful. Plus I was looking for some great brass chains. Thank you for mentioning these weren't gold but brass and they are solid. I would love to win as well. ceafranz@gmail.com
It would be fantastic to win such a gift! I always read The Beading Gem Jourbal, and often pass the information to my jewelry making buddies. Also put some of my jewelry on my blog and facebook.
Very pretty chains and pearls in the giveaway. I like the designs you made to demonstrate the long necklace options. Perfect for winter. Very generous of House of Gems to supply the prize and you for hosting.
We think alike so many times Pearl. I was just going to send you some pictures of some lovely long necklaces I saw on some gals that I thought you might like.
That just sort of cracks me up!
Throw my name in there my friend. I'll give it a whirl. I love chains too! Who doesn't?!
Thank you so much for the chance to win my choice of supplies from House Of Gems. This would be a wonderful gift to me. Love your chain selections too.
Would love to win those materials. Thanks for the chance to win.

I am a subscriber. The chain are adorable. Sure they will make beautiful jewelry.
Winning this giveaway would make such a difference for me, for a number of reasons. The Belle Époque period is the one I admire most, not only for its jewelry but also for its art, literature, and decorative style. All of this inspires me in my jewelry designing and in my writing as well.
Because I am disabled and try to make ends meet on a severely restricted income, I cannot often have the money needed to buy top-quality components such as these. I will post on social media and blogs about the giveaway, although that is a bit self-defeating; I'll be increasing my competition, won't I?
Thank you so very much! I have subscribed the Beading Gem Journal for years, and my hope is that you'll continue for many more to come.
Wow generous giveaway! I love the textured silver chain and I think long necklaces are fab. Thanks for the chance to win. Gill gilldusty2@btinternet.com
I love both making and wearing long chains, and it was so much fun to read about the history of them. I never knew that. Thanks for the delightful post! And thanks for the awesome giveaway!
I have heard of different bead stores but I think this is the best so far as their postage and delivery is international. This is awesome House of Gems;thanks for the giveaway.
Great ideas! I've started designing long convertible necklaces last year and have been on the search for nice, good quality chains. I'm going to check out House of Gems!

Hi Pearl!!! According to your email about the winner, apparently, it's ME!!!! :) My email is schleprock2004@yahoo.com Sorry I forgot to leave it! And THANK YOU!!
Remember House of Gems? They are a long established California based jewelry supply company which caters for both hobbyists and artisans alike with volume discounts! Well, they are back with another great giveaway.
They sent me some chains and lovely creamy cultured freshwater pearls for review so I got to see some of their products up close.
The silver ones I received were silver plated except for the darker stainless steel chain, . The gold looking ones were actually brass chains. I really like the fact these brass chains were solid metal not plated. I used them as is for the designs shown here but you could also patinate them if desired. As far as I could tell, the chain links were all closed so that makes them sturdier. I did have to use my flush cutter to cut some links to make these necklaces shown here possible.
I love the look of long necklaces for the winter months as they do brighten up sweaters and turtlenecks. Long lengths of chains are therefore perfect for making sautoir inspired necklaces! Sautoir is French for a long chain necklace.
This style of long chain necklace and long lariats with tassel ends was especially popular during the Belle Époque era (1871-1914). Victorians and Edwardians loved them! The style continued well into the flapper years (1920's). Fans of Downton Abbey would have spotted some awesome sautoirs - check out this wonderful post for photographs from Season 4.
I love the look of long necklaces for the winter months as they brighten up plain sweaters and turtlenecks. So I created two pairs of long sautoir inspired necklaces, one in each metal color. One necklace had a pendant with the classic chain tassels and the other was left very long. All very easy to make. These can be worn in many different ways.
I used very different vertically holed focals for the pendants. The gold one looks more classic. Pearls were used in links for the longer matching necklace. The crystal one looks contemporary in style.
Flappers sometimes wore long strands of pearls doubled up. The problem was the shorter loop usually works itself up to the neck as shown in the long chain picture below left. But there is a way to prevent that from happening and make the necklace loops adjustable as shown in the picture below left. My tutorial/tip for making convertible sautoirs will be out later this week.
