Although some people are not okay with it, glue is perfectly fine to use in jewelry making. I guess the chains can be sewn down as an alternative option - takes longer!
Multi chain bracelets can get messy if they are not braided or separated at intervals with special findings. But there is another solution. Check out Anne Evers multi chain on leather makeover bracelet tutorial on her blog, Plan B. It is a great solution to recycle old chains, unloved jewelry or leftover materials into something wearable.

She uses strong glue to attach the bits and pieces on the leather base.
Other possibilities include using suede and sewing the chains etc down. In this case, a second layer of suede will have to be added underneath to hide the stitches. What would be awesome is to do a combination with bead embroidery!
