Grouping components together is a good way to get spectacular results in jewelry design.  This gorgeous Crystal Flare necklace tutorial by Geneva Vanderzeil over on the A Pair and a Spare blog is a perfect example of this design approach.

She carefully glued many crystals onto felt.  Using navette shapes at the edges meant she could cut away the felt such that it couldn't be seen.

Not keen on gluing?  Then consider using sew-on crystals.  Bead embroidery enthusiasts can also apply a grouping of their work for a necklace.
