It uses both rock salt and table salt. It doesn't matter which. Neither works better than the other.

You can use either one, although it recommends using regular table salt. If using Rock salt, be sure not to add so much that it makes the ice to hard to actually move in the bucket.

Now this is a question that is hard to specify an answer. See, I was raised poor, we used what we could get for the salt, Although, the rock salt performs far better and it easier to use in all. Salt is basically the same, but the rock salt crystals makes the ice cream better than table salt and tends to do the trick. As table salt is so fine it tends to take far more to get results.

The instructions say you can use either. I use ice cream salt.

It needs to be rotated in the ice cream maker for 30 minutes which will give it a shake like texture. Pop it into the freezer for about an hour to freeze it a lil harder.

45 minutes to an hour and half, I have seen it take as long as that to be done. Also depends on how much you make in the cannister and the consistency of the batch. I use a custard recipe I found and modified from foodnetwork.com. I was a chef at one time and I modified the recipe for 4 qt. ice cream makers and for taste and quality. It is a beautifully constructed machine and works really well. The ice/salt/water ratio has to be just right so the freezing process takes place correctly. 5 inches Ice, salt 1/2 inch in next, 6 inches ice, salt again, and fill to top with ice, and top with salt, fill cannister with water to drain hole. Easy, check the level of ice and maintain the level.

30 minutes or so. Depends on temperature and if you have used enough rock salt to freeze.

A little longer than it claims--if you are making rich & creamy style using eggs, then you have to let the mixture heat up (up to 1 hr), then you have to chill it completely before pouring it in the canister (3+ hours or overnight), then you have to church it in the ice cream maker (they claim 3 hours, but I found it took 5 or more).

The instruction book clearly states about 30 minutes...or when the motor stops...which will happen when the ice cream is too stiff to churn!!

About 30 minutes. You must keep the ice and salt around the container. The ingredients must be cold when you start.

How long does it take for the ice cream to be done?

I always watch mine, I never let it run long enough to stop, the point here is that if you do run it longer than needed, the motor will eventually wear severely causing the machine to seize over time. The older style would do this, it is suggested since the lid is clear you use a flashlight and examine the thickness, then as you see the ice cream become a consistency you like, remove the motor, turn the ice cream out into a storage container, add any extras you like, chocolate chips, caramels, cookie parts, then freeze to desired consistency again inside your own freezer.

You have to keep an eye on it somewhat. After 15 minutes you stop it & stir a little, then let it run another 15 minutes.

Yes the motor automatically turns off when the ice cream has become thick enough. To obtain a harder ice cream, it must then be transferred to your freezer.

The instructions say unplug after 30 minutes OR after the canister has stopped. I unplugged it when my ice cream was thick because it did not stop. It may have stopped had I let it continue to run, but I didn't want to put unnecessary stress on the motor. It was ready in about 30 minutes.

Have only used it twice, but I do stay with it and unplug it immediately.

The motor will stop or slow to no movement when the ice cream is done. It does not automatically shut itself off.

The motor stops when mixture becomes to thick to churn, about 30 minutes.
Instructions direct you to add ice and salt at 10-15 minutes intervals during churning due to ice meltage and poke around to keep the level even around.
I usually intervene a couple times during the 30 minutes operation.

There is no shut off. To shut it on or off you have to plug it in. So yes you will have to listen for it.

When making ice cream for first time, this product worked flawlessly. Ice cream turned out great and motor handled the load easily. Price was very affordable and I would say this is a great product for making homemade ice cream. It took about 25-30 minutes of run time to freeze well, and like any homemade it was a little soft and needed to be in freezer a while to firm up.
