      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Gettysburg's reverent approach to history is balanced with the committed work of a talented cast - and the hard-hitting dramatization of a bloody turning point in the Civil War.

Nathan T Still the greatest movie ever made on the war, despite its many flaws. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/24 Full Review Tomy J This movie did a great job protraying the battle of Gettysburg In terms of an overall battle and avoiding politics as much as possilbe this civil war movie is one of the best. The Actors performed beyond expectation going in to what I saw. In terms of scale this movie nails it. Where the movie falls off is some of the dialogue between commanders, in between the battle, I feel that some of the non battle plan dialogue is just robotic (dont know im not a historian by anymeasure). I noticed the alot cannon props in the movie didnt roll when fired (just a nit pick) . Great job thou. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Director Ronald F. Maxwell tells a historical epic of one of the bloodiest struggles in American history but also adapting the 1973 novel The Killer Angels by Michael Sharra A huge cast of caliber actors from Jeff Daniels to Sam Elliot to Martin Sheen to Stephen Lang to Tom Berenger The Civil War left an uneasy mark on the nation putting the North and South against each other; the Confederates vs the Union in 1863 General Robert E. Lee prepares to invade the northern part of Pennsylvania for over a three day conflict Colonel Joshua Chamberlain leads the 70,000 men army Maxwell follows the frontlines and maneuvering strategies of both sides The filmmakers remain very authentic to the time period from the costumes to the battle sequences to the living conditions to the army roles The battle scenes are intense and heavy but it is an extensive 4 hours which will test audiences patience A past event such as this thanks to Maxwell allows us to contemplate what could’ve been done to avoid such a bloody struggle There’s enough of a contemporary view without tarnishing the accuracy or exploiting the facts with propaganda It sad learning the reasons many joined because they were bored, thought it was for the thrill or they didn’t have a choice We are reminded of what deep divisions can lead to, how intolerance of those who think differently and can lead to dire consequences Perhaps we can ultimately learn from the past and avoid fratricide A lengthy film but it amazingly recreated a historical event that’s hard to forget Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Through-My-Lens A truly great movie, A pivital time in Americans history. A must for any lover of history. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/09/23 Full Review Alan The scope and scale of the battle scenes in this film may never be matched again, especially in an era of CGI and VFX. A true classic that does beautiful justice to the Civil War. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/23 Full Review Dom Nice film. Great world-building and a film for Civil War buffs, but the director's cut is a little too long for my liking. I also wished that we get to know some of these characters' loved ones so that we know what's at stake if they die. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
