On April 22nd (local time), Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the Summit Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Asian African Conference 1955 (Bandung Conference) held in Jakarta, the Republic of Indonesia.

During the morning, the Prime Minister participated in the commemorative photograph session and opening ceremony, which was followed by a visit to Kalibata Heroes Cemetery where the Prime Minister offered flowers. The Prime Minister also met with H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Mahlab, Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Afterwards, the Prime Minister gave a speech at the conference.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister had a working lunch with H.M. King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which was followed by summit meetings with H.E. Ir. H. Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, with H.E. Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, with H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, and with H.E. Dr. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Prime Minister Abe said the following after the summit meetings,

“This marked the first summit meeting with President Xi Jinping in five months since APEC last November, and I believe this was indeed a very significant summit meeting.

Currently, Japan-China relations have been heading in a positive direction since the summit meeting last November, and I hope to further various levels of dialogue and exchange, including intergovernmental exchanges, to build upon these positive developments in bilateral relations.

The sound development of bilateral relations between Japan and China will benefit the people of both countries, and by promoting ‘Mutually Beneficial Relationship based on Common Strategic Interests,’ we will contribute to regional and world stability and prosperity. We reached a consensus on the necessity and recognition of this.

There are various international conferences scheduled to take place in the near future. I hope to utilize these opportunities to hold summit meetings and strive together to continue to develop a positive relationship between our two countries.

For my speech, I have previously held summit meetings with many of the leaders who were listening in the audience, which helped me to relax, and I spoke candidly about my thoughts.

I called on the assembled leaders to continue to work together and progress together for the peace and prosperity of Asia and Africa.”
