George C. Paine II was a Chief Judge for the United States bankruptcy court, Middle District of Tennessee. He retired from the court at the end of 2011.

Retirement

Paine retired from the court at the end of 2011. One of Paine's major reasons for retiring is the salary which federal judges are given, as "the salary makes it a challenge for judges to educate their children and for the courts to attract top candidates to the bench."[1] Paine was brought before the Judicial Council for his membership in the Belle Meade Country club, which has 600 members, all of whom are Caucasian males. The allegations claimed that Paine, "committed misconduct by holding membership in an organization that practices invidious discrimination on the bases of race and sex." He was found to be not guilty by the Sixth Circuit Judicial Council based on his attempts to overturn the practices of the country club. At the time he was found innocent, he told the press that he is "looking forward to my retirement from the federal judiciary at the end of the year.”[2] However, the decision of the Sixth Circuit was appealed. The Committee on Judicial Conduct found that Paine violated Canons 2A and 2C of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges. However, the committee held that because Paine was retiring shortly, they would not issue a punishment for the violation. In addition, the committee held that Paine acted in good faith and that his reputation as a judge should not be impugned upon his retirement because of his membership.[3]

Education

Judge Paine attended the University of the South for his Bachelor of Arts degree and the University of Mississippi for his J.D.[4]
