Abbott’s fundraising breaks the bank, and it reinforces what I have been speculating about why he is stockpiling so much cash. He’s not worried about Wendy Davis any more. He’s worried about lieutenant governor Dan Patrick.

Abbott and Patrick appear to be on a collision course for governor in 2018. Only one of them can be king of the hill. I would give Abbott a huge advantage over the light gov if a showdown should materialize. Abbott has much more in the way of resources than Patrick does. There are a lot of prominent law firms in Texas, and Abbott has raised large sums of money from many of them. I don’t think Patrick has a similar group of donors that can keep him afloat if he tries to make the race in four years.
