There’s a new way to collect honey and it’s never been sweeter. Flow Hive may have solved the hassle of getting the honey from the hive. Father and son team Stuart and Cedar Anderson have come up a great solution that offers honey on tap straight from the hive.  Does it sound too good to be true? Let’s take a look at what makes this invention so amazing.

Collecting honey hasn’t always been the easiest of tasks. First you have to suit up to protect yourself, then smoke the bees to calm them and remove the honey combs from the hive while trying not to get injured or upset the bees. After the honeycomb is removed, you must carefully scrape the honey comb off the screens and insert it back into the hive. Phew!! That’s quite the process to go through for some delicious honey, and that’s only one screen.

The Anderson’s came up with a honeycomb cell that allows the bees to fill the comb with honey on one side and seal it with wax while the other side of the comb shifts and releases the honey to flow out of the hive. After the honey is harvested you simply reset the comb and the bees start over undisturbed. You literally never have to open the hive if you don’t need to.

Honey 5The incredibly clever design allows for massive amounts of honey to be harvested without much fuss. Simply attach the collecting tubes to the end of the honeycomb row, grab a jar and turn the lever to see the liquid gold pour out right before your eyes. This could easily be called a beekeepers dream come true. Not only are you protecting your precious bees, you’re also protecting yourself.

honey 4I love seeing people working together to fix a problem or make something just a little more convenient for everyone. This invention will likely change the way people have been dealing with their bees and hives for decades. Great for the novice to the expert in so many ways.

from what I gather, bee keepers are skeptical about this. I’m no beeologist but it seems like a good idea if they can make it cheaper.

The frames need replacing because they gather dirt and microbes. It will make for a sick hive if you just leave them in there.
