Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 5,211 ratings

In the name of the Father, the Son, and ... the Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of all three, but how often do we live with an awareness of only the first two? As Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit—the Helper—so that we could be true and living witnesses for Christ. Unfortunately, today's church has admired the gift but neglected to open it.

Breakthrough author Francis Chan rips away paper and bows to get at the true source of the church's power—the Holy Spirit. Chan contends that we've ignored the Spirit for far too long, and we are reaping the disastrous results. Thorough scriptural support and compelling narrative form Chan's invitation to stop and remember the One we've forgotten, the Spirit of the living God.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The author of the bestselling Crazy Love pleads passionately for the church to live by the power of the forgotten God: the Holy Spirit. Calling Christians to more than just a better life, Chan says he wants to live a life unexplainable without the Holy Spirit, so dependent on the Spirit that, he says, if he doesn't come through, I'm screwed. He offers vivid personal stories and illustrations about how the church ought to help Christians discern the powerful gifts of the Spirit, rather than toning down radicals. Biographies of people keeping in step with the Spirit conclude each chapter. Not a comprehensive study but intended for application, it consequently lacks depth of context in most Bible references. Ultimately, though, this serves Chan's aim to end ceaseless talk and follow God's lead to assist the poor, the abused and anyone without hope. Chan himself has given all royalties from Crazy Love to a ministry to children trapped in sex trafficking, explaining that God said to him, I want you to love them as your own children. Chan's voice is fresh, earthy and fiery. (Sept.)

From the Back Cover

Powerful.

When is the last time someone used that word to describe you?

It doesnt make sense that Almighty God would have children characterized by fear and insecurity. He put His Spirit in us so we could be known for our power (Acts 1:8; 2 Tim. 1:7). Sadly, most believers and churches are known for talent or intellect rather than supernatural power. Whats worse is that were okay with it.

Could it be that weve forgotten the One who distinguishes us from every religion and cult in the world?

Through solid scriptural support and compelling narrative, breakthrough author Francis Chan returns us to the Holy Spirit as the Bible describes Him. He reminds us that we were not created and saved merely to survive our time on earth. Chan contends that weve ignored the Spirit and are reaping the disastrous results.

Its time for the beloved church of Jesus Christ to reverse the trend of neglect. Lets pursue the Spirit-filled life of effectiveness God desires and we desire.

This book really makes you think. I love that the author doesn’t just explain or try to influence his own perspective, but he challenges you to reflect and explore your own relationship with the holy spirit. The writing style is much like a conversation, which makes it engaging. It’s the kind of book that you have to take breaks and sit with some things for a while. If you are seeking inspiration and an opportunity to reflect on how you can deepen your relationship with God the father, the son and holy spirit then this is a great read.

About the Holy Spirit. Amazing book and writer!
Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2013
I love the fact that Francis Chan is talking about this often controversial issue of the Holy Spirit. There are far too many churches that remain silent on the purpose and the benefits of the Holy Spirit. And how sad is his statement in the introduction (page 15) - "From my perspective, the Holy Spirit is tragically neglected and, for all practical purposes, forgotten.....I'm willing to bet there are millions of churchgoers across America who cannot confidently say they have experienced His presence or action in their lives over the past year. And many of them do not believe they can."

Chan goes on to say that "There is a big gap between what we read in Scripture about the Holy Spirit and how most believers and churches operate today......If I were Satan and my ultimate goal was to thwart God's kingdom and purposes, one of my main strategies would be to get churchgoers to ignore the Holy Spirit." (Pg 16)

Throughout the book, believers are challenged to not forget the Holy Spirit and to get to know Him on a more personal level. Chan clearly describes that the reason to desire the Holy Spirit is not for selfish reasons but for "the common good". (1 Cor 12:7) Another important challenge that Chan offers is for the reader to reflect on whether or not they are truly willing to yield to the Holy Spirit in all things: "Do I want to lead or be led by the Spirit?".

While this book is not designed to be a "how to" manual to develop a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit, it certainly does provide some thought provoking questions for the reader about how they are/aren't living out their Christian faith and the greater depth that may be available to them if they seek it.

This book also has a DVD and workbook available as supplemental resources that can be used for group study. Although I have not seen the DVD, I do have the workbook and it is designed to help you develop a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit and put some of the newfound revelations into action.

As I read through Francis Chan's Forgotten God, I became so convicted of neglecting the Holy Spirit's presence in my own life. I've just haven't addressed His power nor presence. And I'm completely embarrassed, as a pastor and a Christian, to share that. But it's the truth. And while I was reading this book, it taught me to look at the Holy Spirit in a different way and to focus more on my relationship with Him, rather than how well Drew is doing ministry.

In this book Chan gives an overview of who the Holy Spirit is Biblically, and what the Holy Spirit can do through someone's life.

And that's exactly what it is. It's only an overview of who the Spirit is and what He can do through someone's life. Chan doesn't go into a great theological debate or use terms that only seminary professors and students can understand, but he writes this to the common Christian that attends church every Sunday morning. He writes this to the Christian who longs to have a relationship with God on a daily basis. He writes this to the person who wants something more for their life, rather than the same old motions and routines day after day.

The way that Chan is able to communicate throughout the book is amazing. His words and imagery that he uses makes it so easy for the reader to follow along with Chan's ideas and what he is trying to communicate. Communicating is a gift that Francis Chan has and he uses it for the glory of God.

Between each chapter, Francis shared stories of how the Holy Spirit is working throughout the lives of different people throughout the world. They were encouraging stories; stories of hope and what a life could do when you have a strong relationship with the Holy Spirit. Those alone make this book worth the read.

But that's not even the best part of the book. There were a few solid chapters that really spoke to me within the book, but the one that really convicted me was the chapter "Why Do You Want Him?" In this chapter, Chan goes into great detail of our purpose for wanting the Holy Spirit in our lives? Is it for our own benefit? Or for God's glory?

Often times I will try to do ministry, my marriage, and life on my own without relying on the Holy Spirit for strength and direction. But when I do, it will be often for my own benefit and not for the glory of God.

The Holy Spirit is what our churches are missing today. And that's what Francis is trying to communicate with his book. They're not missing better speakers, musicians, flashier lights or anything else like that. It's the Holy Spirit. That's what we're missing. (I posted a blog on that while I was reading this book. Check it out here)

This book is so well written, and gives a great overview of who the Holy Spirit is, what He can do in your life when you rely on Him, what a relationship with the Holy Spirit is supposed to look like, and what the Holy Spirit can do through the modern day American church.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in who God is, and how a relationship with Him can further His Kingdom and give you a purpose and calling that far outweighs your hopes, dreams, and understanding. Chan is an excellent communicator and if you come across any book or message with Francis in it, you must listen or read it! He is Biblically rooted and presents the Truth of the Scriptures in a relevant and easy to understand way.

Kudos Francis on writing a book that many Christians need to read. I know that I needed it.
