On Sept. 12, 2011, the bodies of three men were found in a Waltham apartment – the victims of a brutal execution.Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev who was pronounced dead early Friday after a shootout with police, was a friend of one of three men found dead in an apartment in Waltham on Sept. 12, 2011, with their necks slit and their bodies reportedly covered with marijuana.Middlesex County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman MaryBeth Long told The Associated Press on Monday that her office will not reveal details of its investigation, but said investigators would follow up if the bombing probe provides any new clues into the slaying.The men's throats had been slashed, a medical examiner determined. Their bodies were ripped with knife wounds and then covered with marijuana.Tsarnaev had been training with one of the 2011 murder victims in an attempt to transition from boxing into a possible career in the sport of mixed martial arts, according to ABC News."It was graphic. All three men were killed by wounds to their neck area," said then-Middlesex County District Attorney Gerard T. Leone at the time.The men had all been lifelong friends, said Dylan Mess, 21, whose brother Brendan Mess, 25, was killed.Erik Weissman, 31, was a Cambridge Rindge and Latin graduate who was active in his synagogue.Raffael "Raffi" Teken, 37, was a Brandeis University graduate who grew up in a prominent Brookline family.They were three strong men who sources said were dragged to separate rooms and slaughtered.Ward 5 Councilor Gary Marchese, a lawyer by trade who represents Harding Avenue, told Wicked Local/Waltham that from everything he’s read about the case so far, he’s not sure there’s a clear connection between Tsarnaev and the triple murder.  "I’d like to put that case to rest for sure and I know the neighbors do too," Marchese said. "And as a city and neighborhood we want to put those murders to rest. But, I don’t see the dots being connected."Marchese said there were vague connections between the suspects being "potheads" and the victims being alleged drug dealers, but he wasn’t sure the timeline of events was sensible."In my gut – and unless there’s more and something comes out – I don’t see him as a connection to that triple murder," Marchese said. "But hey, I hope it rekindles the investigation and opens some other avenues to explore who the killers are."The question that remained for police and prosecutors is why the men were targeted; who left behind money and drugs; and how many people were at the apartment in the hours leading up to the slayings.
