Spacecraft Data Suggest Saturn Moon's Ocean May Harbor Hydrothermal Activity - Mar 11, 2015 - 3:08:37 PM

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has provided scientists the first clear evidence that Saturn’s moon Enceladus exhibits signs of present-day hydrothermal activity which may resemble that seen in the deep oceans on Earth. The implications of such activity on a world other than our planet open up unprecedented scientific possibilities.

“These findings add to the possibility that Enceladus, which contains a subsurface ocean and displays remarkable geologic activity, could contain environments suitable for living organisms,” said John Grunsfeld astronaut and associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington...

World AIDS Day Op-Ed by U.S. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Lisa Johnson - Nov 28, 2014 - 2:28:13 PM

Lisa-Johnson.jpg
On December 1, 2014, the global community will observe World AIDS Day. First observed in 1988, this day provides all of us with the opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV, to show our support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate the lives of those who have died from this terrible disease. The statistics on HIV/AIDS are truly staggering. More than 35 million people – brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, neighbors and friends – have died from HIV/AIDS since the virus was first discovered in 1981. Today, some 34 million people around the globe are living with HIV. There are over 8,000 people living with HIV in The Bahamas at an estimated 3% prevalence among the population. In fact, the Caribbean region trails behind only sub-Saharan Africa as the most HIV-affected region in the world.
