“Until disaster struck….”

Fascinating history of Spain, well, all of Europe, and the disastrous consequences of the rise of Islam.

It’s what children in our public schools should be taught under “World History” instead of dawah, the proselytizing for Islam.

Holy Toledo

By Dr. Jack Wheeler, To The Point News, June 2, 2017:

Story continues below advertisement

Toledo, Spain.   As you drive up the hill upon which this ancient city sits, at the city’s entrance you are greeted by this statue.  It is of King Alfonso VI of León and Castile (1040-1109) holding his sword as the Christian cross symbolizing his liberating Toledo from Moslem rule.

The sword has been the symbol of Toledo for 25 centuries.  Celtic blacksmiths who lived on the hill along the Taugus River learned that the minerals in the iron ore of the region was exceptional for forging weapons.  They got so good at it that Hannibal equipped his Carthaginians with their swords, enabling them to inflict defeat after defeat on the Romans after his famous crossing of the Alps with elephants in 218 BC.

By 193 BC, the Romans located the source of the swords, subjugated the Celts, and founded a city on the hill, naming it Toletum.  Roman blacksmiths there developed a process of making swords of layered steel with different carbon contents, known to history as “Toledo steel,” the finest in the world for millennia until the hi-tech methods of today.

After Emperor Diocletian began in 285 AD dividing the Roman Empire in two, west and east, and Emperor Constantine completed the process in 324 by founding the Eastern Roman Empire with its capital of Byzantium renamed for him – Constantinople – the Western Roman Empire and its capital of Rome began a long slow deterioration.

Huge swaths of Europe were taken by Germanic tribes.  One of them, the Visigoths, sacked Rome in 410.  They tried to settle in Gaul but were kicked out by the Franks.  So they crossed the Pyrenees to create a Kingdom of the Visigoths that encompassed most of present-day Spain – with its capital here at Toledo.

Thus the city became Holy Toledo – for the Visigoths became Christians.  At first, in the mid-400s, they adapted an interpretation of Christianity known as Arianism.  By the 580s they accepted the Roman Catholic or “Nicene” version.

What’s important to grasp about the Visigothic Kingdom of Spain, lasting 300 years from the mid-400s to the mid-700s, is that it was a flourishing civilization, with prosperous towns and cities and a vibrant culture.  There were no Dark Ages.

That is, the “Fall of Rome” –  dated at 476 when the “barbarian” (albeit an Arian Christian) Odoacer became the first King of Italy – did not precipitate the “Dark Ages.”  Gibbon was wrong.  Modern archaeology has unearthed an abundance of evidence that civilization – flourishing Christian civilizations – continued throughout Christian Egypt, the Christian Maghreb (north coast of Africa), Christian Visigothic Spain, and Christian Gaul.

Continued, that is, until disaster struck.  Starting in the mid-600s in Egypt and the Maghreb, and the mid-700s in Spain, the archaeology vanishes.  Countless towns and villages are abandoned and turn to rubble, the same with most all cities.  Many never come back.  Some take more than 200 years to recover.

It is this period, from the mid-600 or 700s to the mid-900s, that saw a spreading and deepening Dark Ages that snuffed civilization out in much of Europe.  What caused it?

Islam.

The Arab Conquest left civilizational wreckage in its wake in Egypt, the Maghreb, then into Spain where the Visigothic Kingdom was destroyed, and then finally stopped in 732 at the Battle of Tours by Charles Martel and his Frankish knights.

The book to read on this is The Impact of Islam by historian Emmet Scott.

He not only goes through the newest evidence of archaeology, but explains how the worst practices of Medieval Europe were adopted from Islam – such as slavery, which was little practiced in Christian pre-Moslem Spain for example.  Christianity ended the horror of Roman slavery on which the Roman Empire depended.  Islam brought it back.

Further, a principal cause of the poverty of the Dark Ages was Islam’s closing of the Mediterranean trade routes from west to east, isolating and impoverishing the west.

Yet even though their kingdom was conquered by Moslem crusaders, the Visigoths were not.  One of them, a Christian knight named Pelagius (685-737), led them north into the remote Pico de Europa mountains.  It was there he began the centuries-long effort to rid Spain of the Islamic conquest known as the Reconquista.

The article to read on this is Reconquista (TTP, August 2009).  It recounts one of the greatest heroic epics in the history of Christian Civilization.

It was Alfonso VI who liberated Toledo from the Moslems in 1085.  It was his great-grandson, Alfonso VIII (1155-1214) who led 30,000 knights in a surprise attack on 200,000 Moslems at the Plains of Tolosa in 1212 to destroy Moslem rule in Spain.

Except for one remaining Emirate of Granada in the south.  Finally, the emir, Boabdil, surrendered in 1492 to Ferdinand and Isabella, and the Reconquista was complete.  Ferdinand and Isabella’s grandson, Charles I of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) restored Toledo as Spain’s court and church capital – making the city Holy Toledo again after 800 years.

Today, Toledo is a small town of some 50,000, charming, historic, and peaceful.  There’s not a burqa in sight.  There’s not a mosque in the city.  There was a mosque which centuries ago was converted into a church – which reminds everyone of the Reconquista victory by being called Mesquita Cristo de la Luz – Mosque of Christ of the Light:

mosque-of-christ

The city vista is stunning – and there are sword stores everywhere:

city-vista
swords
However – you knew a however was coming – just an hour’s drive to the north lies Spain’s capital of Madrid.  The city government has festooned a huge banner across the face of the Madrid City Hall.  It is:

madrid-city-hall-w-banner
Yes.  As the Madrid-based El Pais newspaper explains:

“The council, run by leftist bloc Ahora Madrid, made the move (to hang the banner) to express its solidarity with the increasing numbers of asylum seekers from countries such as Syria who are desperately trying to enter Western Europe.”

The paper says the banner will be left in place for only week.  The El Pais story was written in September 2015.  As you can see, for I took this picture two days ago, it’s still there.

It is such childish stupidity, such suicidal masochism, that is causing The Strange Death of Europe.

That’s the title of a just-out book by British author Douglas Murray.  It is a historically monumental tragedy what Western Europe is willfully doing to itself.

Is there hope?  If there is, it could start right here in a Holy Toledo that ignites a New Reconquista – not just for Spain, but a reconquering of all of Europe for Christianity and Western Civilization.

Look at that picture of Alfonso VI again, holding high the Sword of Christ and Civilization for all to see.  The Christian knights of the Reconquista fought for centuries to liberate their land from heathen invaders.   All the Europeans need is just a small fraction of their courage and indomitable persistence.

French philosopher Jacques Ellul –

In a major encyclopedia, one reads phrases such as: “Islam expanded in the eighth or ninth centuries …”; “This or that country passed into Muslim hands…” But care is taken not to say how Islam expanded, how countries “passed into [Muslim] hands.” .. Indeed, it would seem as if events happened by themselves, through a miraculous or amicable operation… Regarding this expansion, little is said about jihad. And yet it all happened through war!

…The jihad is an institution. and not an event, that is to say it is a part of the normal functioning of the Muslim world… The conquered populations change status (they become dhimmis), and the sharia tends to be put into effect integrally, overthrowing the former law of the country. The conquered territories do not simply change “owners.”

Every empire, every civilization that made the fatal mistake of tolerating islam, in the name of tolerance, was eventually taken over by islam.

And yet, here we are, 1400 years, and the loss of 50 countries later – still tolerating islam. We are failing to realize that – Either you root islam out, or islam will eventually root you out. This is an absolute certainty.

In fact, if you look closely, you will realize that we are already moving on the same path as our ancestors’ civilizations that were taken over. Although, we are losing it willingly and though muslim colonization, not violent conquest. Such is the tragic state of affairs that even the non-muslims who oppose islam, many of them still support the right of muslims to pratice islam. And the saddest part is that even if we realize our catastrophic mistake, we will still not be able to abandon our attitude of tolerance toward muslims. Our tolerance is the rope with which muslims will hang our civilization.

I have a friend with whom I can’t even talk about this topic. She thinks any such “intolerance” is reprehensible, unacceptable, hateful. I’ve shown her the reality, so many articles, what is so clear to many here. I don’t think Western culture has the ability to fight this. Without something truly drastic, it’s already over and just a matter of time now.

Pamela is very wrong when she writes this:

“Is there hope? If there is, it could start right here in a Holy Toledo that ignites a New Reconquista – not just for Spain, but a reconquering of all of Europe for Christianity and Western Civilization.”

Spain, Europe and the world has already had a taste of that. Its name was Franco.

Pamela leaves out this vital piece of Spanish history because she has no knowledge of it. But she ignores the role of the Catholic Church in Spain, in Ireland, in Poland and in Germany IN THE 1930s that was absolutely key in opening the door wide to Hitler and the Nazis and many millions of her own people died.

If you’re referring to info from John Cornwell and his book “Hitler’s Pope” that source has long since been discredited.

Even the picture on the front was a piece of misinformation, as it was taken almost a decade before Pius was Pope, and cropped so as to hide that it wasn’t taken in Nazi Germany, but PRE Nazi Austria, a country who’s army had similar uniforms.

Check out “Misinformation” by General Ion Pacepa, or some literature by Michael Coren on the subject.

Pope Pius was hard core anti Nazi, as well as anti communist, and directly, or indirectly, was responsible for saving nearly 400 thousand Jews.

In fact, almost immediately after the war, I believe it was the new country of Israel that gave Pope Pius a special award for his work.

Unless I’m way off base here, and you weren’t referring to “Hitler’s Pope.”

In 1492 under Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the non-converted Jews were expelled from Spain. Many other countries in Europe and the middle east have done likewise. However, it has been postulated by some prominent historical scholars that this “threat” was to coerce the many Jews in prominent positions in Spain to convert not leave.

Franco had his one good point, he caused a movement the Destroyed the Communists, the Socialists, and the Anarchists and saved the Spanish People from Communism ! The Church was THE leading force in the Anti-Communist struggle Worldwide up to the 1960s and Vatican 2 ! Vatican 2 has destroyed The Catholic Church that existed up to that time and has tried to destroy it totally, but the faithful have fought against that happening and the Church is rebuilding itself to what the Church was during most of it’s History ! Another good point about Franco was he told Hitler to go pound sand when Hitler wanted Spain to Ally with Germany and Italy during W.W. 2 because Spain’s only duty, was to Spain itself ! So I can understand why a leftist would hold the viewpoint that you do against the Catholic Church !

It’s good to hear from Dr. Jack Wheeler again, and that he has given his vote of confidence to Emmet Scott.

It’s good that more people are waking up to the neo-Pirennist theories that are being formulated in this decade, principally by Scott.

Henri Pirenne was a celebrated Belgian historian in the early 20th century, one of the most famous and respected experts on European history at that time.

He was the first to realize that our conventional accounts of the fall of Roman civilization, of the early Medieval period, and of the rise of early modern Western civilization were wrong. The missing piece of the puzzle, which he filled in, was Islam.

Pirenne found that the German tribes did not destroy the civilization which they forcefully entered around the 5th century AD. In fact, under their rule there may have eventually even been reinvigoration of the European economy, because the German kings threw out much of the Roman regulatory bureaucracy that had been stifling economic and technological innovation.

With military assistance from the descendants of the German invaders, the Empire was even able to stave off the much more serious and destructive invasion of Attila the Hun.

After Pirenne’s death in the 1930s, his theories about the Islamic destruction of most of the territory of Roman civilization were still taught in the textbooks as being among various respectable alternatives.

But by the 1970s new evidence was interpreted as contradicting Pirenne, and his ideas on the fall of Rome and on the enormous destruction of peoples and culture committed by the Saracens disappeared from the history curriculum.

In the current century, Emmet Scott has written a series of books reexamining the evidence from the mid-20th century that was considered at the time to sink Pirennist thought. And he has examined other, more recent evidence from archaeology and from new translations of ancient documents that, in his view, makes the case for a modified, neo-Pirennist theory stronger than ever.

Pope Francis is making the situation even worse. There have been bad popes before – just look at the Middle Ages and Renaissance. I would hope that he retires and goes back to his cave hermitage and let the Roman Catholic Church elect another to the Papacy to join the great Popes of recent history.

Everyone is missing the real point here. Really there is another whole story. I attended high school in Mallorca for four years in the 80’s. I am very familiar with Spanish Culture and the plight of the true Castilian’s . Spain is very touchy about Spanish or even Catalan being the main language spoken . Why would their be a banner hung in English stating Refugees Welcome. Why is it in English? Are the refugees coming from countries that home language is English? Is English a Second language in Spain? Humm. No. So Why? Thoughts?
