A Palm Beach County, Florida, official has come up with the idea of imposing a special tax on President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, in order to offset costs of the commander-in-chief’s frequent visits to the facility.
According to county stats, locals spend more than $60,000 each day Trump visits the estate, due in part to mandated law enforcement overtime.

But creating a special tax for one citizen on his private home — even when that one citizen might be the president of the United States?
Doesn’t seem constitutional, is all.

“Trump has visited the resort six times since his inauguration, and is planning to return this weekend to celebrate the Easter holiday. …
“[T]he high cost of Trump’s visits has led County Commissioner Dave Kerner to propose a tax on the resort to cover the costs.
“‘We’re very honored to have the president here, but at the same time, his travel here is such high frequency he’s not visiting Palm Beach County — he’s governing from it,’ Kerner told Money magazine.
“‘Whatever our priorities are, the taxpayers didn’t pay this money to us to protect the president.’
“The resort is already subject to tax breaks because it is incorporated as a club and because Trump surrendered the development rights in 1985.
“The tax isn’t the first proposal to deal with the costs of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago visits.
“Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) who represents Palm Beach, called on Trump last month to either provide federal reimbursements to the local governments incurring increased security costs or cut back his trips to the resort.
“Palm Beach’s mayor also suggested creating higher taxes for residents in early March, saying if the government didn’t help cover costs, local taxpayers would likely have to bear the burden of the added security costs associated with the visits.”

If you bothered to read the article , the tax is proposed as federal govt is not reimbursing local govt for security cost.
If its once a year , its ok. But weekly visits are adding to the cost. IF fed govt pays they don’t have an issue.
Its not a tax but security cost recovery that is proposed.

That is not how democracy works. Every time a municipal minion makes a stupid statement, there should be a claw back on federal funds, tax money is to be used for services, not services for sale to those who can be forced to pay extra for them. democrats re stupid.

Better if all presidents pay for their own vacations . The passed presidunce spent a lot of our money including a trip to Mexico for spring break , for one of hi daughters . Seeking to tax Trump for something that was allowed the o’bummer is not quite right . Progressives will be all over that .

The federal government should reimburse the county. This is not a normal situation for a place of residence. The local taxpayers should not have to pay the extra cost. No different than Reagan’s retreat in California.

Don’t think for one minute that Trump has not faced a hell of a lot tougher enemy in the NY commercial real estate market than he will ever see from some two bit FL politician. He endured far worse treatment under the regime of former NY mayor Ed Koch and prevailed every time. Having read “The Art of the Deal” and “Time To Get Tough” gives one a better perspective of the man and his attributes, many of which are on display daily.

My recollection is that every time Pres. Geo. Bush came to his ranch in Crawford, TX our McLennan Co. Sheriff’s Dept. had to put on extra extra security at increased cost and no one was looking for a special tax or federal payout at that time. BUT… we were proud he chose our County.

Meanwhile, he has donated his first quarter’s salary to our national park system. Also, I am not sure that his trips are paid for by our taxes any more than his wife’s trips back and forth to NY are. They want to do this just because he is Trump, and they lost. But it certainly does not seem constitutional.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of public funds spent on law enforcement when the former POSUS visited Palm Springs and Los Angeles, CA. From what I understand, none of the huge law enforcement overtime expenses incurred by the two cities was ever repaid by the federal government.
