REVEALED: ISIS bomb-makers create laptop bombs to fool airport security checks

TERRORISTS have developed new ways to plant explosives in electronic devices that can evade airport security screening methods, according to US intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

By Simon Osborne, The Express, Apr 1, 2017:

ISIS and al-Qaeda bomb-makers have learned how to hide explosives in battery compartments while ensuring a laptop would function long enough to get it past screeners.

And although the technology is advanced, FBI testing found the laptops could be turned in to deadly explosive devices using everyday household tools.

There is also intelligence suggesting terrorists have got their hands on airport security equipment so they can carry out their own tests on how to effectively conceal explosives in laptops and other electronic devices.

The intelligence played a big part in the Trump administration’s decision to ban passengers flying out of 10 airports in eight countries in the Middle East and Africa from carrying laptops and other large electronic devices aboard planes.

As always, all air travellers are subject to a robust security system that employs multiple layers of security, both seen and unseen

US Department of Homeland Security spokesman

The FBI has carried out tests which revealed the latest laptop bombs would be far more difficult for airport screeners to detect than previous versions terrorist groups have produced.

A US Department of Homeland Security spokesman told CNN: “As a matter of policy, we do not publicly discuss specific intelligence information. However, evaluated intelligence indicates that terrorist groups continue to target commercial aviation, to include smuggling explosive devices in electronics.

“The US government continually re-assesses existing intelligence and collects new intelligence. This allows DHS and TSA to constantly evaluate our aviation security processes and policies and make enhancements when they are deemed necessary to keep passengers safe.

“As always, all air travellers are subject to a robust security system that employs multiple layers of security, both seen and unseen.”

US authorities have said the electronics ban is focused on the eight countries in part because of intelligence indicating a greater threat there.

Intelligence and law enforcement assessments done in recent months also indicate that the US has more confidence in detection machines and security screeners at airports in the US and Europe.

Aviation security expert Robert Liscouski told CNN developed countries had a “better policy regime” that allows them to set standards and ensure uniform compliance.

He said: ”We don’t have the same level of confidence in other areas of the world because we don’t have the government bodies and stature to assure compliance.”

The airline restriction, which took effect March 21, bans many electronics from the cabins of planes flying directly to the US from airports in eight countries.

Passengers on those flights must place electronic devices larger than cellphones in their checked luggage.

Intelligence officials say it is more difficult for terrorists to detonate explosives remotely and that placing devices in the cargo bay might reduce damage even if a bomb were to explode.

Britain implemented a similar rule this month for airplanes flying from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

So how did they get airport security scanning equipment? Right! If you said by working as security personnel at airports!

Ban electronics from transport by air from suspect places. If someone needs electronics, make them available for rent at the destination.

For some people they depend on laptops to make their living.
The policy of making laptop bombs safer by putting them in the luggage compartment doesn’t fill me w/confidence.

Could not the little thumb drive be used in a rental computer or maybe tablet at destination to keep people safer?

Some company laptops have IP information on them that are more valuable than the laptops themselves. Some military contractor laptops have classified data on them. Putting that data on an unsecured thumb drive is unthinkable.

Thanks. I had not thought of from that standpoint. Don’t have a clue as for solutions for these laptops, then.

Your news about the IDF allowing muslums to enlist is extremely disappointing. Maybe Angola will be my choice of country — because they realize islum, all of it, is fundamentally evil.

Dangerous to ride in taxie, own vehicle, train, bus, walking, biking, cars have even crashed in to houses!
Compared to miles traveled, flying still safest. Ships, the unsinkable Titanic went down on maiden voyage! It is just awful that activities that were relatively safe and enjoyable, now, have become places of stress and unnecessary tension. € ;~ ( ₩

I can see how airport security equipment may have been misused, presumably it is in every airport through Nigeria, Mali, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt,Sudan,Somalia,Yemen, Iran,Libya, and of course ISIS held Airports in Syria and Iraq to name just a few.

The real issue here has arisen because information has come to light which would obviously cause panic and disruption if it had been released straight off. Some bright spark has made the decision to introduce extra measures hoping to get away with a quiet acceptance, and that has backfired. Truth is if the rumours are true then moving laptops/tablets (presumably containing the danger) to the Hold but allowing retention of mobiles would not protect the Planes, similarly not having a total device ban on ALL flights is equally as bad.

What is needed now if a full and frank reveal and then solutions can be made and be accepted.

Yet, the TSA Check done to the poor 13 year old boy last week was inexcusable. We must do like Israel and go to profiling. This current method is so time consuming and I do not trust how it is being done. Too many ways to get around and too many airport employees that are not trustworthy.

Not a problem for the Canadian security services. All the terrorists from the countries which are the subject of the travel ban can simply arrive in North America via Montreal’s Trudeau airport. Just this week the Canadian PM stated that he wants the “rights” of terrorists to counterbalance the rights of ISIS sympathizers who work at the airport to retain their jobs. Seriously.

“Intelligence officials say it is more difficult for terrorists to
detonate explosives remotely and that placing devices in the cargo bay
might reduce damage even if a bomb were to explode.” Um, really? Reduce damage? Wasn’t the bomb on Pan Am flight 103, the one that killed everyone on board over Scotland, in the cargo bay? Where was the ‘reduced damage’ there?

At least fewer people were killed by the initial explosion — they had to wait until they hit the ground to die.

There is a solution for them. I voted for it! From what I understand, a law or policy or whatever it is named, 1952, I believe allows us, legally, to remove and refuse any that are hostile to our way of life. Enough of such additional inconvenience , additional costs, additional time necessitated that used to not be needed. Used to just have to be at plane a few minutes before takeoff! For my first commercial flight, I was notified an hour before flight time that a seat had come available, I was 30 minutes from the airport and not dressed for flying, I made the flight! Another, I was late getting to airport in NYC for flight to Caribbean, they were holding stairway, to roll away, the plane was held for me! Try that today! 3 hrs. ahead for overseas flights! Sometimes longer than the flight! Terrible for the customer. Getting worse by the day, have you heard about the new Disney World security checks, and the admission costs now! Ball games, everything has more security, when will we say, “ENOUGH!”

I wonder if it would be possible to start up a charter passenger carrier, that’s a flying synagogue, or church, or Hindu temple or Buddhist temple and only members of said synagogue, or church or Hindu temple or Buddhist temple can fly said charter flight while the only people servicing/maintaining/flying the planes are all members of such congregations?
