The Iranians are testing the Trump administration, trying to see if he will be as supine as Obama. They may be in for a rude surprise.

Story continues below advertisement

“U.S. Navy ship changes course after Iran vessel interaction: U.S. official,” Reuters, March 6, 2017:

WASHINGTON, March 6 (Reuters) – Multiple fast-attack vessels from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps came close to a U.S. Navy ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, forcing it to change direction…

…the IRGCN boats came within 600 yards of the USNS Invincible, a tracking ship, and stopped. The Invincible was being accompanied by three ships from British Royal Navy and forced the formation to change course.

The official said attempts were made to communicate over radio, but there was no response and the interaction was “unsafe and unprofessional.”

Not necessarily. A ‘shot across the bow’ has been a sign for centuries that no further aggression will be tolerated. If they keep it up, the next rounds go into the engines. If that doesn’t work, then you KNOW where the next ones should go. Straits of Hormuz are international waters, and attempted piracy (for lack of a better word) can, and should be met with escalating force IMHO

Damn bet I am! However, I really don’t think we should get involved in another war if we can help it. We’re already involved in Syria, and though that involvement is minor right now, it has the possibility to escalate.

Mistake me not, we need to do our best to reduce, if not entirely eliminate the threat posed by the “mad mullahs” of Iran, and their rabid, fanatic followers. As it stands right now however, our military has been depleted so severely by Mao-bama, that it would be a serious tactical error to become involved in yet another conflict in the area at this time. No matter that we wish it were otherwise, this is just reality. Manning levels are down, equipment is being cannibalized to repair other equipment, we have tactical aircraft which are unusable due to lack of repair parts, and it goes on and on…..

Now that we have president Donald Trump, the United States needs to enforce the rules of the sea in the Strait of Hormuz and other International Waters. We need to put a stop to the misbehavior and dangerous actions of Iran, even if we need to fire upon their vessels, this needs to be done.

The fact that the iranian motor boats can alter the course western naval battle ships, is a victory for iran. The iranians know the west will back down from any fight, nothing has changed. The rules or engagement are not to engage. No one ever accomplished anything by backing down. The Iranians are testing the Trump administration, trying to see if he will be as supine as Obama. They may be in for a rude surprise’. Surprise? Not from the look of it, same as what has happened for years, iranians force America to back down.

Don’t know legally, but watched a lot of ships go in and out of my old port city. It seemed like the big ships generally had the right of way, as they were harder to turn, easier for the small ships to get out of the way.

True, the iranians know they can intimidate western navies, unlikely they would try the same stunts with Russians or Chinese.

As an aside… Mr. Trump recently deployed the U.S.S. Carl Vinson Carrier Battle Group to the So. China Sea, to rein in China for their aggression around and about the Spratley Islands, among other real estate that China is encroaching on.
Remember that Obungler had recalled ALL carriers to CONUS for
” service ” so they will soon need to be deployed wherever our proper Commander in Chief sees the necessity.

Pay Attention to iran… They are laughing in our face about having
been ” put on notice ” due in part to those displays of self restraint…
Iran has not had a good @$$-whooping since Israel took out their nuke facilities some years ago
Iran can certainly stand by for a swift kick in the kiester if they push
their luck again…
There will not be a damn thing they will be able to do about it either… with whatever amount of their ” navy ” they want to sacrifice to being deep-sixed.
They will feel the sting for a lot of years, but not on their civilian population.

Rather a limp feeble thing to send into a potential war zone, when it cannot even defend itself against a motor boat, with an out board motor and an unprotected rifle.

She’s there on a peaceful mission, supposedly. You don’t expect a disarmament inspector to wear a tactical gear and carry full auto rifles, right? Same here. Yet while I understand a diplomatic thought behind it, with all these simulated attacks I can’t stop thinking that it’s time for this poor ship to have a friendly company. A destroyer would be plenty enough.

Considering iran’s public statements and actions pertaining to the west, the United States in particular, it would be a very good idea to show the American flag means business there. Now is not the time to discuss disarmament, that subject can be approached when the iranians indicate they are serious about peace instead of the death and destruction of Israel as well as everyone else.

This has been going on ever since the N. Koreans seized the U.S.S. Pueblo in the late 60’s.. That ship, a radio surveillance platform was in international waters, completely unarmed,
That type of ship should be armed to the teeth !!

Yeah, why would some little motor boats force a U.S. Navy ship to “change formation.” That’s code for ‘they got the hell out of there.’ It didn’t say what kind of U.S. warship it was. But, whatever, it was most certainly armed. And Well. So, if our ships are there, why are we playing this game. If they threaten us, they get their motor boats turned to scrap metal. If it is a matter of international sensitivity, then we should not be there in the first place if our ships are there just for display.

Yep. One day, it won’t be just motor boats passing by so amicably. They will decide to use their weapons. Then what. Will we fire back. It would take very little effort on our part to clean their clocks. But…….will we do it.

I wouldn’t be too eager to write the Military off as ” chicken “… We, as a basically civilized country, We often go to excessive lengths to keep the peace… which by no means places us in the category of cowards or chickens.
It may not turn out to be the normal services that put an end to the malarkey being employed by the muslim invaders, which is ALL they are.
As apparently entrenched and determined as they are,I want to see the islamic invaders come to realize just how hopelessly outnumbered and out-gunned they certainly are,

I would prefer to see the that they just abandon their conquest… leave the continent for parts they originally arrived from, or decide to assimilate to laws of OUR constitution, leaving their shit-ria law back home…which of course they have no intent of doing, they appear to prefer annihilation to capitulation.

You are right. This was pathetic! They should have run down and sliced through these Iranian boats. Yes, and ‘What surprise’? None, the U.S. and British ships changed course and the Iranians wept in laughter at what they perceived as infidel cowardice. Whoever lead this flotilla was a gutless wonder! I believe that whoever was in charge said the Iranians have been “un-professional”. And he was serious? No, they were professional, deliberately provocative which was their intention, and he a prize ‘wet’.

the US navy is run by girls and homosexuals who are hardcore members of the democrat-muslim party, and is the ultimate paper tiger. iran’s glorified fishing boats have been humiliating this navy for years. trump needs to obliterate the naval officer corp and start over with fighting men, and needs to blow one of these iranian boats out of the water in the near future to set the tone in the middle east for the next 4 years

Might be “hard charging” for the fancy-boy crowd, but seems asinine for warriors. Maybe rat obama was training them for a night at “Man’s Country” in Chicago.

That large ship with the three radomes is a spy ship, not an attack ship. I have seen them for years offshore of some of the secret government facilities I have worked at around the world. But the Russian ones were fishing trawlers with multiple radomes, at least the Russians pretended to be non-military. It could, also, be a targeting facility, but with the curvature of the Earth, that is small-minded.
Just sink their butts. What are they going to do, put out ANOTHER fatwah? Chant “death to America” more often than they do now?

Our ship’s changing course was the worst decision imaginable; this will only insure that more of this military intimidation continues indefinitely.
Why are we sending poorly, insufficiently armed intelligence vessels like this into very dangerous places like the Strait of Hormuz without any well armed escort vessels capable of defending them?
As this incident was nothing less than an act of war, when these Iranian fast attack vessels came at (came close) to our ship, they should have been blown out of the water!
Anything less on our part will be read by the Iranians CORRECTLY as a sign of our weakness to be exploited.

If you read the story, it’s not USS Invincible, it’s the USNS Invincible. USNS is usually a Navy ship that is being crewed by civilian merchant sailors. Usually auxiliary ships like refueling or supply. The Iranians know this also. But on Iranian TV, they once again showed their power over the United States Navy.
